Connective tissue

Page 3: Observe the following slide. Identify the type of epithelium present. What else is present in this slide? Do Now.

• List the different types of connective tissue and where they are located.

• Identify the major cells found within connective tissue.

• Locate and identify the types of fibers found within connective tissue.

Objectives

Page 4: Observe the following slide. Identify the type of epithelium present. What else is present in this slide? Do Now.

-Bind structures

-Provide support and protection

-Fill spaces

-Store fat

-Produce blood cells

-Protect against infection and help repair tissue damage

Functions of Connective Tissue

Page 5: Observe the following slide. Identify the type of epithelium present. What else is present in this slide? Do Now.

-Farther apart than epithelium

-Contain an “extracellular matrix” consisting of fibers and ground substance

-Vascular

Characteristics of connective tissue

Page 6: Observe the following slide. Identify the type of epithelium present. What else is present in this slide? Do Now.

• 1. Fixed Cells: reside in tissue for extended period of time• a) Fibroblasts- star shaped, produce fibers by

secreting proteins into matrix

• b) Mast Cells- located near blood vessels, release heparin (prevents blood clotting) and histamine (promotes inflammatory responses)

Major cell types

Page 7: Observe the following slide. Identify the type of epithelium present. What else is present in this slide? Do Now.

• 2. Wandering Cells: move through cell and appear in response to injury/infection

a) Macrophages: digests unwanted material within a tissue. (Similar to a lysosome)

Major cell types

Page 8: Observe the following slide. Identify the type of epithelium present. What else is present in this slide? Do Now.

• Adipocyte: Fat cell

• Chondrocyte: cartilage cell

• Chondroblast: builds cartilage

Other Cell Types

Page 9: Observe the following slide. Identify the type of epithelium present. What else is present in this slide? Do Now.

Osteoblast: builds bone

Osteoclast: removes bone

Osteocyte: bone cell

Other Cell Types

Page 10: Observe the following slide. Identify the type of epithelium present. What else is present in this slide? Do Now.

Plasma Cell: produces antibodies

Platelet: helps with blood clotting

Red Blood Cell: delivers oxygen to the body

Other Cell Types

Page 11: Observe the following slide. Identify the type of epithelium present. What else is present in this slide? Do Now.

Collagenous: made of collagen, thick, strong, make up ligaments and bones

Elastic: made of elastin, thin, frequently stretched, also called “yellow fibers”

Reticular: thin collagenous fibers, highly branched, form support systems.

Fibers

Page 12: Observe the following slide. Identify the type of epithelium present. What else is present in this slide? Do Now.

1.Read the article about the man who regenerated his finger using ECM from a pig bladder!!

2.Answer the questions on the back of the article.

Do Now

Page 13: Observe the following slide. Identify the type of epithelium present. What else is present in this slide? Do Now.

* You will be split up into groups. Each group will be responsible for 1-2 types of connective tissue. You will become an expert on this tissue. Ms. B. will then put you into larger groups where you will share your expertise with other classmates!

Jigsaw

WITHOUT looking at your notes… try to remember the following…

1) Name 2 main functions of connective tissue.

2) List 2 cells and 2 fibers you might find in CT.

3) List 3 examples of CT
