Some examples: Making proteins, like keratin (hair follicles) Sending signals (nerve cells) Turning sunlight into glucose (leaf cells) Contracting for movement (muscle cells

Organelles Cooperate

Organelles work together to allow the cell to accomplish its job.

Nucleus, Ribosomes

The Cell Membrane and Cell Wall

Regulates what enters and leaves the cell.

Endoplasmic Reticulum (ER)

A system of folded membranes that transport proteins within the cell

Golgi Apparatus

G.A. marks proteins and exports them outside the cell in membrane bubbles called vesicles.

Known as the recycling center.

Chloroplasts and Mitochondria

Chloroplasts

Capture the sun’s energy to make glucose (food) in plants and algae. Located in the cytoplasm and the the site of photosynthesis.

Mitochondria

“Power house” of the cell provides energy for cells. Cell that need more energy, have more mitochondria

Both the ER and the mitochondria have folded membranes to increase the surface area where chemical reaction occur
