AreaO When you think about area what do

you think about?

O Talk to your neighbor.

Page 3: Objective O We will measure the area of a figure by using square units and real world examples.

Square DealO Trace the outline of the circle

pattern on your desk.

O How can we measure the area covered by the circle?

O Why is counting the squares only an estimate and not a way of getting an exact answer?

O If I could find the total area of this circle what would I do?

O Area – total number of square units inside of a figure.

AreaO How can we use what we just

discovered to generate a definition about area?

O To find the area of a region we have counted up all of the square units so we can say that…

O Area is the number of square units used to cover a region.

Identify the Area of Each Region

O Now that we know the definition of area how does that relate to arrays?

O What’s similar?

O What is the area of the figures to the left?

O How did you figure it out?

Ethan Allen O Mr. Williams was trying to figure out

if his new couch fit in his new apartment. Length of his couch was 6ft. And the width was 5 feet. What is the area of his couch.

New Stove!O The math queen Ms. Burgess just

bought a brand new stove from Sears. For the stove to fit it must have an area of 36 square feet.

O If the stove she is looking at has a length of 6 feet and a width of 7 feet will the stove she is looking at fit? Why or why not?

Gardening!O Ms. Graziano was gardening outside

of her home. She needed to plant her new fig tree and needed an area of 15 square feet. If the length is 5 feet and the width is 4 feet does she have enough room?

Finding the Area O Independent work. Solve each

problem. Find the area of each problem.

Exit TicketO Autumn was trying to figure out if

her new bed would fit in her room. If her bed had a length of 9ft and a width of 5 feet. Would it fit in a room with an area of 120 sq. ft.?
