Japanese Imperialism• In the 1930s, Japan fell under Military Rule

due to the Great Depression

• The Military took power but kept the Emperor as the symbol of state power

• Militarists wanted to solve economic problems by foreign expansion

• Wanted an empire to include China, and South Pacific

• Wanted room for growing population, sources of raw materials, and new markets

Japanese Invasions• In 1931- Japanese invade Northern Chinese

province of Manchuria and set up a puppet government

• This was the first direct challenge to the League of Nations

• League condemned Japan’s actions but had no power to enforce decisions

• Japan withdraws from L.O.N in 1933• In 1937- Japan invades China• Rape of Nanking –Japanese troops kill tens of

thousands of captured soldiers and civilians in the Chinese city of Nanking (Nanjing) and raped over 10,000 women

Italian Fascist Expansion

• Mussolini wanted to recreate an empire like that of Ancient Rome

• Wanted to solve economic problems by expanding territory for markets and raw materials

• Turned his sights on Africa as source of expansion

Mussolini Attacks Ethiopia• L.O.N.’s failure to stop Japan encourages

Mussolini to plan his own aggression• Wanted an African empire like Britain and France• Ethiopia was one of only four independent African

Nations- defeated Italians in 1890• Mussolini wanted to avenge defeat• Invades in 1935- L.O.N. condemns Mussolini but

does nothing to help Haile Selassie of Ethiopia despite his warnings

• Britain continued to allow Mussolini’s troops through the Suez Canal – hoped to avoid conflict with Italy and keep peace in Europe

Nazi Germany’s Expansion

• Hitler had promised to undo the Treaty of Versailles

• Wanted more land for Germany’s growing population

• Wanted to control Europe’s raw materials and markets

• Wanted to regain lost territory

• Create a cartoon depicting Germany, Italy and Japan’s desire for more land. You could use characters (Hitler, Mussolini, etc.) or symbols (swastika, fascia, etc.) to depict the aggressors of the 1930s. You may also want to use maps (Example: Japan grabbing land from China). Include a creative title for your cartoon and a caption.
