Obedience FHE Lesson

Purpose: A lesson designed to teach family members to understand obedience, which is being diligent in doing what our Heavenly Father would have us do.

Scripture: “If ye love me, keep my commandments.” John 14:15

Opening song(s) and prayer: “Nephi’s Courage,” Children’s Songbook, page 120 “Quickly I’ll Obey,” Children’s Songbook, page 197b

Lesson: “The Beacon” story: Use the summary and visuals included to tell the story of Amanda and “The Beacon”. Discuss how Amanda’s obedience blessed their entire family. Lighthouse Activity Complete the activity as listed. Make sure to answer the questions and discuss. Jonah and the Whale Using the summary and visuals included, tell the story of Jonah and the whale. Discuss the consequences of his disobedience and the blessings he received when he did repent and obey. Relate to your life. What kind of consequences could you face if you are disobedient? If possible, share personal experiences when you were disobedient and obedient and the consequences and/or blessings you received. Happy or Sad Game Go through a list of possible scenarios and have the children raise the correct sign as to whether that would make them happy or sad. Use personal experiences, but be sure not to single out one child’s misbehavior in front of the family. In a case of disobedience talk briefly (30 seconds or less) about how they can make things right again. Be sure to emphasize that we are happier when we are obedient in the first place Ideas (feel free to make your own): * Your mom told you to pick up your toys before dinner, but you didn’t feel like it. * Your mom always tells you to put on sunblock before you play outside on hot days. Even though you don’t really like to take the time, you put it on anyway. * Dad told you to be sure to put the lid on the trash can tightly, so the raccoons wouldn’t get into it, but you wanted to keep playing instead. The trash was all over the yard. * Your teacher said that you should read a chapter in your social studies book. You were busy


and almost decided to just skim it instead, but you went ahead and read it all. There was a pop quiz in the morning and you were ready. *Mom said you were going to have a busy morning, so you should pack your lunch the night before, but you were too busy watching your favorite show, so you didn’t do it. No lunch for you tomorrow. Display the lighthouse quote during the week and challenge every family member to be obedient. Remind them how much happier we can be when we are happier in the first place. Bear Testimony of the blessings that come from being obedient to the Lord.

Refreshments: See below for a yummy recipe Enrichment: Based on the ages and attention spans of your children, choose one or more of the following enrichment activities to enhance the message of the lesson. Enrichment activities do not necessarily need to be completed on the same night as the lesson. We often use them as reinforcement/reminders during the week.

Enrichment ideas: Mother, May I?: One person (it could be Mom) stands facing away from a line of kids. She then chooses a child (at random, or in order), and announces a direction. These follow a pattern, such as, "Brian, you may take' x' giant/regular/baby steps forward/backward." The child responds with "Mother may I?" Mom then states "Yes" or "No", depending on her whim, and the child complies. If the child forgets to ask "Mother may I?" he/she goes back to the starting line. First one to touch Mother wins.

Blessings Follow Obedience Coloring/Puppet Activity: (Directions listed with activity). Distribute the puppets to the children and have them color them. When the stage and puppets are complete have them take turns telling how each person/puppet was blessed for their obedience.


Delicious Gluten Free Chocolate Cake (best chocolate cake I’ve had in ages) From the Recipe Shoebox. The ingredients:

CAKE: 1-1/2 cups semi-sweet or dark chocolate chips 2 cans (15-oz. each) garbanzo beans, drained and rinsed 6 eggs 1-1/2 cups sugar 2 Tbs. cocoa powder 1 Tbs. lemon juice 1-1/2 tsp. baking powder 3/4 tsp. baking soda 1 tsp. vanilla CHOCOLATE FROSTING: 1/4 cup butter 4 cups powdered sugar 1/4 cup cocoa powder 1/4 cup milk 1-1/2 tsp. vanilla WHITE CHOCOLATE DRIZZLE: 1 cup white chocolate chips 1 tsp. shortening Directions: FOR CAKE: In a small bowl, melt the chocolate in the microwave for about 2 minutes on 50% power, stirring frequently until smooth. In a blender, blend the beans and eggs until creamy. Add remaining ingredients, including the melted chocolate and blend well. If your blender is not big enough, pour into a bowl to mix. Put batter into a greased and floured 9x13-inch baking pan and bake at 350 degrees for about 40-45 minutes, until a toothpick in center comes out with moist crumbs--DO NOT OVERBAKE. For cupcakes, bake for 20-25 minutes. When cool, frost with chocolate frosting. FOR FROSTING: Beat all ingredients until creamy and spreadable. FOR DRIZZLE: In a small microwaveable bowl, melt white chocolate chips and shortening together on 50% heat for 2 minutes or until melted and smooth. Take care to stir frequently. Immediately after melting, drizzle over frosted cake or cupcakes and allow to set. Enjoy!

Attach top of lighthouse to bottom with a metal craft brad (in the shown holes). Flashlight will be shone through the above hole.


Print one boat per family member. Write “SS {child’s name}” on each boat. Laminate if desired. Punch a hole in the top sail and tie a yarn through it to form a necklace for Lighthouse Activity.

Happy or Sad signs. Print enough signs so that each family member can have one of each. Mount on popsicle sticks.

BLESSINGSFOLLOWOBEDIENCE:EggCartonStage

Cut a piece of construction paper to fit the top of egg carton lid. Write “Blessings Follow Obedience” and scriptural reference (Eph. 6:1), then glue onto lid (see illustration). Make holes in centers of four or five egg cups for puppets. Pull puppets down behind lid. As you use each puppet, push straw up so figure appears above lid; then read its description. Store your puppets inside carton. (See page 48 for puppet instructions.)


BLESSINGS FOLLOW OBEDIENCE Instructions: Color and cut out each figure with its accompanying story. Fold on dotted line and glue drinking straw between papers 1″ from bottom. Cut out a piece of paper the same shape as puppets, and draw another picture of a woman/man you know who has been blessed because of their obedience. Have the family each take turns using the egg

carton stage (directions above) and tell how each person’s life was blessed by their obedience.
