Born in Palermo, Ontario, daughter of Dr. Anson Buck. She married Mr. Colin Campbell in 1884. She had been a member of the Imperial Order of Daughters
of the Empire since 1908. She died at the age of 90 (1970), having dedicated more than 65 years of her life to social welfare. Mrs. Campbell was the first
woman to hold office in the Children’s Aid Society. She graduated from Wesleyan Women’s college at Hamilton, Ontario. Mrs. Campbell was widely known for
her efforts in social work, education and philanthropy. She was present at the 1897 Jubilee of Queen Victoria and the coronations of both Kings. An amazing
woman, she raised $750,000 in 1914 for the IODE and helped to collect $58,000 in scholarship funds for sons and daughters of war veterans. While in Egypt in
1914 she raised $15,000 for a new YMCA headquarters. She rolled bandages for soldiers during the second Riel Rebellion. She also helped to operate a
home for girls. Her husband, Mr. Colin Campbell was born in Burlington, Ontario on 25 December 1859. He was called to the Ontario bar in 1881 and the
Manitoba bar in 18982. In 1900 he was appointed Attorney-General in the Manitoba Government and remained there until he resigned in ill health in 1913. He
died the following year, 24 October 1914.

As a cadet he acquired his pilot's license and played trombone in the band. He graduated with a B.A. from the University of Manitoba (United College) and later earned a C.I.M. from the U. of M. He was president of Hignell Printing for 20 years until its sale in 1988. A steadfast volunteer, Jack was president of various community and business organizations, including the Winnipeg Chamber of Commerce, Rotary Club of Winnipeg West, Probus, the Canadian Institute of Management (Manitoba), and printing
organizations. He was actively involved with a number of charities dear to his heart, including Crippled Children and Adults of Manitoba (now SMD), Independent Living Resource Centre, Doray Enterprises, and at the lake, LOWDPOA and the local roads board. In 1984, Jack was appointed Honorary British Consul in Winnipeg and served for 12 years. In 1996, he was on the Queen's Honour List and was awarded an O.B.E. in London, England. He respected the British diplomats with whom he worked and valued his lasting relationship with them. Although not religious, he had strong moral convictions and a sense of fair play. His twisted sense of humour delighted everyone.

20/08/2003 THORNTON, Allan Mr Chairman of the Environmental OBE
Investigation Agency “Services to protect the Environment”
Mr. Allan Thornton, The Chairman of the Environmental Investigation Agency (EIA) is being awarded the OBE “in recognition of his outstanding work to protect the environment.” Canadian-born Thornton is a co-founder of EIA, which covertly investigates environmental crimes including the illegal wildlife trade threatening endangered species, illegal logging, hazardous waste, and trade in climate and ozone-altering chemicals. Using pioneering techniques and
undercover filming, its investigators work around the world in often dangerous circumstances to expose crime and use their evidence to campaign for changes in international law and the policy of governments.
Thornton began as a Greenpeace volunteer in Canada and in 1976 came to London, where he set up and was twice Executive Director of the British office of Greenpeace. He was also a co-founder of Greenpeace’s flagship, The Rainbow Warrior. Co-founding the Environmental Investigation Agency in 1984 with fellow activists Dave Currey and Jennifer Lonsdale, Thornton helped to pioneer the organisation’s ground breaking approach to activism which continues to this day. Among EIA’s major successes are: - Playing a vital role in securing the worldwide ban on the trade in ivory in 1989: - Reducing the international trade in wild caught birds; - Uncovering the largest poaching rhino horn operation in the world; - Reducing the demand for whale and dolphin meat in Japan;
- Raising over £80,000 for Kaziranga National Park in India and providing equipment for the Kenyan Wildlife Service; Turning global attention to the re-emerging illegal trade in big cat skins and exposing the trans-Himalayan trafficking routes for big cat body parts; Contributing to the closure of 53 illegal mines which were destroying prime tiger habitat in India. Working from EIA’s US office, which opened in Washington DC in 1989, Thornton spearheaded a lengthy campaign to ban imports of illegal timber. It was passed by the US Congress in June 2008, and the European Union followed suit this year with a ban due to be enacted in early 2013.
Thornton has worked for 35 years to protect the environment through highly strategic and focused campaigns which gather evidence to drive increased enforcement and protection for endangered habitats and species. “EIA will continue to fight to expose the crime lords behind illegal
logging and the ivory trade, and all those profiteering from the ransacking of the
environment,” he vowed. “We have to do more to protect our beautiful world.” ======================================================================================

17/06/2006 HEWITT, Angela Ms Pianist CC OBE (OC)
“For Services to Music”
Angela Hewitt, CC, OBE Canadian pianist Angela Hewitt was born in Ottawa, daughter of the Yorkshire-born Godfrey Hewitt (thus she also has British nationality) who was choirmaster at Christ Church Cathedral in Ottawa. She began piano studies at the age of three with her mother. She also studied violin with Walter Prystawski, recorder with Wolfgang Grunsky, and ballet with Nesta Toumine in Ottawa. Her first full-length recital was at the age of nine, in The Royal Conservatory of Music in Toronto, where she studied from 1964 to 1973 with Earle Moss and
Myrtle Guerrero. She then went on to be the student of French pianist Jean-Paul Sevilla at the University of Ottawa. Angela Hewitt has performed around the world in recital and as soloist with orchestra. She is most well known for her cycle of Bach recordings which she began in 1994 and finished in 2005—covering all the major keyboard works of J.S. Bach. Her recording of Bach's Art of Fugue was released on 17 October 2014. Her discography also includes works by Couperin, Rameau, Messiaen, Chabrier, Ravel, Schumann, Beethoven, Chopin, Debussy and Fauré. She has recorded two discs of Mozart concertos with the Orchestra da Camera di Mantova, and a third with Ottawa's National Arts Centre Orchestra, conducted by Hannu Lintu. With the DSO Berlin and Lintu, she also recorded the Schumann Piano Concerto. She also has earned a scholarship at the age of five. Angela Hewitt's entire 2007–2008 season was devoted to complete performances of Bach's
The Well-Tempered Clavier in major cities all over the world. Her Hyperion DVD on Bach Performance on the Piano was released to coincide with the tour. In July 2005, Angela Hewitt launched the Trasimeno Music Festival in Umbria near Perugia of which she is Artistic Director. In recent years, she records using her own piano, a Fazioli F278 concert grand with 4 pedals. After living in Paris from 1978 to 1985, Hewitt moved to London, which has been her principal residence ever since. In 2000, she was made an Officer of the Order of Canada (OC). In 2002, Hewitt was awarded the National Arts Centre Award, a companion award to the Governor General's Performing Arts Awards, given to an artist or group who has had an exceptional performance year. Hewitt was named an Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) on June 17, 2006 and Gramophone Artist of the Year in 2006. 14/06/2013 MARTIN, David Andrew Mr Designer, Interactive SmartBoard OBE
Executive Chairman & Co-Founder of \ SMART Technologies “For Services to Education (Alberta, Canada)”
David Martin received his BSc in applied mathematics from Concordia University in 1971 and began his professional career as a statistical analyst at Bell Canada. He then worked as the Western Division Manager for Rio Tinto North American Services Limited for five years before co-founding Keyword Office Technologies Limited in 1978, where he was Executive Vice President. After a 16,000-kilometre road trip with his wife Nancy Knowlton during which they envisioned an innovative system that fused the best from television, computers and the Internet, they co-founded SMART Technologies Inc. in 1987 where he served as Executive Chairman until 2012. In 2012 Martin co-founded the Byye
Group with Nancy Knowlton, where he is Executive Chairman and CTO while continuing as Chairman for SMART.
David Martin’s investiture as told by his wife Nancy Knowlton Service and success in education
Dave’s award was for services to education, and he is now an Officer of the Order of the British Empire. Allowing for some level of interpretation and elaboration (because there
is no elaboration on the part of the government), this means for the raging success first for the SMART Board interactive whiteboard and second for the additional elements that SMART wrapped around the product. About 90% of UK classrooms have an interactive whiteboard, and a significant majority of those come from SMART. A mysterious process The whole process of receiving an OBE is quite quiet and, some would say, mysterious. Dave’s first knowledge of the
award came at the end of 2012 when he received a phone call asking if he were granted an award would he accept. You can imagine a certain level of skepticism about the legitimacy of such a call, but after Dave believed that it was indeed real, he accepted without hesitation. After confirming with the Canadian government the acceptability of conferring the honor, Dave’s award was announced on the Queen’s Birthday Honours List in June. Dave had the opportunity to select from a number of dates and chose October 17. As it turns out, that was an historic date with Prince William, the Duke of Cambridge,
performing his first investiture on the Queen’s behalf. Getting to the palace on time All of the investees were entitled to bring three guests. Beyond me, Dave selected Nancy Macnab, Byye’s CFO and SMART’s first CFO, and Suzan Olsen, a long-time friend and the person who introduced us. We were invited to the palace for 10:00 a.m. to allow us a comfortable amount of time to get fully in place before the formal event started at 11:00 a.m.
69
Meeting the Duke of Cambridge Dave was taken to a prep room for the investees to be instructed on how the event was to be conducted and how they were to engage with the Duke. We went to the ballroom where we were treated to some music while we awaited the formal event. Right on schedule the Duke and his guard entered the ballroom, and aside from saying “please be seated,” the Duke reserved all of his comments for the honorees who entered one at a time for their personal recognition from the Duke. It was clear in watching each of the presentations that the Duke was both well supported (an aide was providing whispered comments before the Duke greeted each recipient) and had prepared for the event. So much has been written about his ease of interacting with people, and we saw this time and again as he was animated and engaging with a broad cross section of people. The view from inside Buckingham Palace The event concluded just as it started – precisely and definitively. The gentle blinking of the lights in the ballroom confirmed our need to exit. We spent a little
time outside the main entrance to the palace taking a few pictures inside the quadrangle that is hidden from the sight of tourists. We, particularly Dave, savored the walk out in front of the always-present tourists as we left the inner courtyard. After one last look at Buckingham Palace from outside the gates, we moved along to our celebratory lunch with family, friends and business colleagues. Quite the experience. About the Author: Nancy Knowlton is co-founder and CEO of the Byye group of companies and previously the co-founder and CEO of SMART Technologies. She writes about education, entrepreneurship, business management, technology, innovation and other passions
