The city of Chiang Mai is over 700 years old. Long ago it served as the capital of the Lanna Kingdom, which encompasses the northwestern region of Thailand. At the peak of its expansion the Lanna kingdom included the northern and northeastern regions of Thailand, northeastern Burma (Myanmar), northwestern Laos, and southern China. Founded by King Mengrai in 1262 A.D. the Lanna capital was originally established in Chiang Rai, but moved to Chiang Mai in 1296 A.D.

TTo protect the city against raids from neighboring Burma, a wall was built around the city with a surrounding moat and 5 gates of entry. Today the remains of this wall still surround the Old City. At present, Chiang Mai is the largest city in the North, and the second largest in all of Thailand. It serves as the capital of Chiang Mai Province and sits on the Ping River, which flows into Bangkok’s Chao Phraya River.

With its long history as capital of the Lanna Kingdom, Chiang Mai remains home to a rich cultural tradition, with many residents speaking traditional Lanna language as well as standard Thai. With over three hundred Buddhist temples, Chiang Mai is a haven for historical and cultural studies. Surrounded by luscious mountains, jungle, rivers and waterfalls, Chiang Mai is a superb base to embark on outdoor activities and hill tribe visits, enabling your students to learn about culture, leadership and adven-ture throughout their stay with us.

Why Choose Chiang Mai

“The trip is probably the highest value in their elementary experiences. The combination of ‘life skills’ and education makes the trip so valuable”

-Dr Ian Russell, Principal, Concordian International School, speaking about the value of a VSP trip.

Highland and Lowland tribes migrated south China, MyanmaHighland and Lowland tribes migrated south China, Myanmar, and Laos over hundred years ago. Their unique way of life and indigenous knowledge still exists after thou-sands of years. Visiting the local Hill Tribe Museum gives students an introductory background lesson to the lifestyles and tools passed through generations. It introduces how closely the hill tribe people understand and live closely to the natural world. The museum also outlines social welfare programs, known as the Royal Projects, designed to address and prevent poverty and statelessness within the hill tribe communities.

Visiting these tribes offers a diverse experience that addresses historical, anthropological, and religious changes faced over time. Karen, Hmong, Ahka, Lahu, and Lisu tribes inhabit hills and valleys near Chiang Mai. Visit for a day, or stay overnight in the different hill tribe villages to learn about their colourful lifestyles. You’ll spot Hmong women weaving from locally grown hemp, Karen men tending to their elephants, or ornate gates above the Akha villages. Students experience the seclusion of the mountains while sleeping in huts and trekking the local trails. huts and trekking the local trails.

In this group activity, students are set to the task of building a water and wind proof shelter out of jungle materials consisting of bamboo poles, banana leaves, bamboo ties, and teak leaves. After discussing basic structure building, students are set off in small groups to design and build there own survival shelter. When the shelters are built they are put through the test of a fake rain storm, forcing students to face some of the real life challenges of surviving in the jungle.

Elephant Centers and Hospitals

VVisiting Schools Program promotes awareness of the challenges faced by elephants throughout Southeast Asia. The use of elephants in Thailand is a hugely controversial topic. Since the banning of their use for logging, domesticated elephants have been employed mainly in either tourist elephant camps, begging on the city streets or in illegal logging operations. Preferred sites such as Elephant Nature Park,Elephant Nature Park, Thai Elephant Conservation Center, and Thai Elephant Home are socially responsible organizations that promote and actively demonstrate conservation, rehabilitation, and positive reinforcement. Activities include feeding, riding, and spending time learning how to train elephants. For alternative sites please contact our staff for more information.

At the Three Generation farm we aim to have students and teachers participate in lifelong food education, allowing participants to understand where their food actually comes from and the amount of work involved with growing, harvesting, packaging and transporting it. On the farm all produce grows without synthetic chemicals. Companion planting and multiple crops creates a dynamic ecosystem that is more resistant to pests. Our farm incorporates local Thai traditional knowledge and helps students to reconnect to the land.
