Ageing population: facts

• In absolute terms, the number of older persons has tripled over the last 50 years and will be more than triple again over the

next 50-year period to reach nearly 2 billion in 2050.

• Of all world regions, Europe has the highest proportion of population aged 65 or over;

only Japan has a similar age structure.

By 2050 the 65+ population will represent the 28% of the overall population in Europe

(currently it is 16% in the EU15).

3

The ageing of the population is changing also the workforce sce- nario in Europe:

currently the ratio between working people and retired ones is equal to 4:1; drastic reduction of this ratio up to 2:1 in 2050.

The elderly society barriers

– Major deficiencies in assistance to the elderly in the transportation modes, hampering their social and working activities.

– Lack of appropriate retraining, lifelong learning activities, and tele-working infrastructure, causing unemployment among the senior workers or in any case problems in prolonging working life.

– Social isolation is a common problem for senior people

The consequences of ageing population present enormous challenges and opportunities for ICT

In addition to the age-related physical and cognitive problems, barriers to independence affecting the lives of elderly people include:

ApproachLevel 4: Personal assistance where individual adaptation and individual assistive technology are not adequate.

Level 1: Universal design should cover the needs of as many as possible.

Level 2: Adaptation for groups with identical needs for adaptation.

Level 3: Individual adaptation and individual assistive technology

COF / Hyper-Ontology / RepositoryCommon Ontology Framework

• defines a formal specification of ontology modules, and how they relate

• defines a methodology and best practice for ontology construction

this makes it possible to define a

Hyper-Ontology

• that acts like a single connected ontology, even though it is made up of possible heterogeneous modules

which can be stored, accessed and maintained within an

27

Standardisation (1/2)• World-wide OASIS Industrial Forum aims to:

– promote the OASIS Reference Architecture through standardisation,

– manage the expansion of the OASIS COF by reviewing and accepting on a 6-month basis newly proposed ontologies and services connected temporarily at the lab-test environment of OASIS for at least 3 months,

– maintain and upgrade the Ontology Management, AMI and Interaction Tools of the OASIS System.

Page 28: OASIS Project Introduction OASIS at a glance Presented by Dr Evangelos Bekiaris – CERTH/HIT 10.10.2008 - Brussels.

28

This Industrial Forum will be an open board without selection criteria. Any industry that wants to adopt, promote and expand OASIS Architecture will be welcome (with a small fee). Incentives of participation for the Industries include:

– Free use of WP1.3, 1.4 and 1.5 tools for connections of services to OASIS Architecture.

– Introduction to a rich world of services and sites for the new member services without having to change their Architecture.

– Ability to influence the OASIS Architecture expansion.– Intercommunication and interoperability with other ventors

services.
