Environmental Management• Oaky Creek Coal, located adjacent to
the In 2013, Oaky
Creek Coal constructed and commissioned a purpose-built Reverse
Osmosis Water Treatment Plant fortreatment of mine-affected legacy
pit water. The treatedwater is re-used in operations as a
substitute for rawwater in industrial applications.
• The water treatment plant has reduced the mine’s rawwater
usage by more than 1 billion litres each year (over60% reduction in
raw water usage – equivalent to morethan 500 Olympic swimming pools
of freshwater savedannually).
• As more mine services switch to Reverse Osmosis water, itis
expected to achieve up to 90% reduction on raw waterusage.
• The water management initiatives being implementedat Oaky
Creek Coal demonstrate leading practice thatwill help achieve the
objectives of Glencore’s watermanagement strategy for its
Queensland coal operations:• To be able to handle weather
extremes;• To use water more efficiently; and• To recycle water
wherever possible.
