Returning to school after a long summer break full of activities and fun was something that was always a hard thing for me. I can remember part of me always being excited about going to my new classes, but a part of me also dreading going “back to the grind.” In life, there comes many a time when we have to do things that we may not be too excited about doing, or looking forward to. Proverbs 4:23 tells us to “Keep your heart with all vigilance, for from it flow the springs of life.” Based on this thought, it’s important that we keep a positive and

optimistic attitude towards all things that challenge us in life. God wakes us every morning to face a new day of challenges, and his promise to us is to be there with us every step of the way. We can turn the crap of life into the fruit of the spirit by showing the love of Christ to those who we en-counter every day, and by keeping a positive attitude, even when we are called to do the things that are less enjoyable than others. I hope to see as many of the youth as possible at our Fusion youth rally on Saturday September 1st here at OPC. It goes from 7:00pm-10:00pm and is a free event for all middle and high school students. Plan to be here. As we get set to start a new season in Unbreakable Youth, we can only be thrilled and excited about what God is going to bring to us and do through us throughout the rest of 2012, and going into 2013. Blessings, Joshua Hosseinzadeh Director of Youth Ministries

For those adults who are interested in becoming members of our

congregation, the pastor will be offering a four-week new member

class beginning Sunday, September 23.

beginning at 9:45a.m.

From the Pastor We had an amazing day at our church this past Sunday (August 19). It began with the presentation of the sign made by our Lego club and the accompanying video which showed how it was put together. It was so entertaining to see the club at work! The Lego club brings young people and their families into contact with our church on the basis on their interest in Legos. Special thanks to Mike and Laurie Hallock for their leadership. At noon we had a surprise baby shower for Josh and Becca Hosseinzadeh and their brand new son, Lyric. There was a nice turn out, as we showered our affection on our youth leader and his family.

Then at 3 pm Habitat for Humanity dedicated the newest house built in Oakland—this one for the Lori Dumas family. Our congregation provided significant funding for the materials from our recent capi-tal campaign, and I was given the honor of offering prayer at the event. Over 100 people gathered for this happy occasion, including representatives of the Bond Foundation, the town of Oakland, and congressman Daniel Webster. Our partnership with Habitat is one of the most significant life-bettering ministries that one can imagine.

Finally, at 7 p.m. we had our dedicatory concert for our new organ, with Jay Brooks giving an out-standing display of talent on our new instrument. He gave us a good demonstration of the depth and rich-ness of our new organ, which will be a blessing to us for years to come.

All in all, that was a pretty amazing day! It tells me that, as we celebrate our 125th anniversary as a congregation, God isn’t finished with us yet! OPC continues to be a powerful presence for Christ in our community, and we exhibit many of the marks of a great church, including compassion for others, open-ness to new ministries, offering the best worship possible with all the talent at our disposal.

It is my distinct honor and privilege to serve as your pastor, and days like that make me wonder how I got so lucky to be invited here!

To God be the glory!

Pastor Bob

Session Highlights: At its August meeting, the Session took the following action: Heard Don Wingate and Pastor Bob talk about their experience at

General Assembly. Talked about the GA’s request that all congregations study the

meaning of Christian marriage. Pastor Bob hopes to offer a class on this in the new year.

Called a congregational meeting for August 26 in order to elect new officers. Approved sign in and sign out procedures for VBS recommended by the CE Committee. Reviewed the minutes of the Preschool Board Heard the church treasurer give his report on our finances. Giving through the end of

July is running almost $30,000 behind the same time period last year. Approved two requests for use of the building. Had prayer for several people connected with our congregation.

A note on behalf of Chesta Hembrooke, founder of S.T.A.R.S.: "Thank you for your generosity in support of students in need. This was a difficult year for our organization as resources were very limited, but your contributions enabled us to meet our target goal for supplies." This year S.T.A.R.S. will provide school supplies to 15,000+ students who are on the free and reduced lunch program in the West Orange County area. Also as a result of your generosity through the baby bottle fundraising campaign, we were able to help Accept Pregnancy Center achieve one of of their goals by providing funds to install a much needed and appreciated window-unit air conditioner into their facility! The mission of Accept Pregnancy Center is to provide a supportive environment for women in crisis situations to be introduced to the love of Christ. Our next meal service at Matthew's Hope will be on Tuesday, September 18. We are in need of volunteers to prepare, transport and serve food as well as to eat and fellowship with the structurally challenged guests. Please consider this opportunity and contact Beth Kennedy at 407-690-7182 if you are able to share in this impactful ministry to the homeless. ...Your prayers and gifts to the poor have come up as a memorial offering before God. Acts 10:4

How is God leading you to serve? For he will deliver the needy who cry out,

the afflicted who have no one to help. Psalm 72:12 Please prayerfully consider getting involved with these worthwhile ministries. Contact Beth Kennedy at [email protected] or 407-690-7182 to find out how you can share your

time, talents and resources to serve those in need.

RETURN SERVICE REQUESTED

DID YOU KNOW?...... During World War II, the Oakland Presbyterian Church was very active with

the servicemen stationed locally. In the fall of 1943 a community song service was held for the soldiers at Kent Field on Johns Lake. Later this service was repeated with the soldiers at Killarney Camp.

At the May 1956 meeting of the Session, the Treasurer, Dan McKinnon, was authorized to accept and administer such gifts of fruit, produce or other properties as may be contributed to the church. A number of the congregation made their annual pledge in “boxes of fruit”.
