SUGARFIRE SMOKE HOUSE ANNOUNCES O’FALLON, IL GRAND OPENING, APRIL 30O’FALLON, IL (April 25, 2018) – Sugarfire Smoke House is pleased to announce its expansion into Illinois with the opening of its ninth location at 1425 Green Mount Road, O’Fallon, Illinois. Based out of St. Louis, Mo., the award-winning smoke house will open for lunch at 11 a.m. this Monday, April 30th.

Sugarfire founder and chef Mike Johnson will join forces with Gregg Medeiros, John Brauch, Tom Lombardo and Mark Pitliangas as owners of the first Sugarfire to reside in Illinois. Coined “Sugarfire 64,” the O’Fallon location is the second location to open outside of Sugarfire’s home state of Missouri, with the first successfully opening just weeks ago in downtown Indianapolis, IN. The fast-casual concept opened its flagship in 2012, and since, Johnson has expanded Sugarfire’s imprint across Missouri to seven locations, including a location within the National Blues Museum, and an extensive catering program. With a background in fine dining, and training under the infamous Emeril Lagasse, chef Johnson created Sugarfire’s menu to reflect a variety of barbecue styles, techniques and influences found throughout the United States.

Known for its succulent brisket, pulled pork and ribs, as well as its signature sandwiches and sides, Sugarfire has consistently been ranked best barbecue in St. Louis by local and national publications alike. Additionally, chef Johnson has served as a celebrity guest pitmaster and competitor in events globally, including Hogs for the Cause, the Perth Yak Ales BBQ Competition, Memphis in May, Australia’s Meatstock, The Kansas City Royal, Charleston Wine & Food Festival and the World Food Championships. Chef Johnson has also been featured on a variety of national television shows, including Food Network’s BBQ, Brews & ‘Que, Beat Bobby Flay and Beat Bobby Flay Rematch, Travel Channel’s Food Paradise, and Destination America’s BBQ Pitmasters.

Having interest in expanding into the Illinois market for a while, chef Johnson found Medeiros, Brauch, Lombardo and Pitliangas to be perfect partners, and O’Fallon to be a fitting community for Sugarfire’s playful culture and expansive selection of barbecue offerings. The latter three are partners in Sugarfire’s Indianapolis location, and Medeiros has long been involved in the food & beverage industry. ...Read More

ST. LOUIS (April 10, 2018) — Rich McClure, former president of UniGroup, has been named the 2018-2019 chair of the board of directors for United Way of Greater St. Louis. Prior to that, McClure was a banking executive with Central Bancompany and served as chief of staff for former Missouri Governor John Ashcroft and in the cabinet of and on staff for former Illinois Governor Jim Thompson, where he had responsibility for local government and education. He currently is principal of Spero Advisors,

HSHS ST. ELIZABETH’S HOSPITAL RECEIVES NATIONAL AWARD FOR ACHIEVEMENTS IN SUSTAINABILITY

(O’Fallon, IL) – In recognition for successful programs to reduce their environmental impact, HSHS St. Elizabeth’s Hospital received the Partner for Change Award from Practice Greenhealth, the nation’s leading organization dedicated to environmental sustainability in health care. The award is one of the Environmental Excellence Awards given each year to honor environmental achievements in the health care sector.

The Partner for Change Award recognizes health care facilities that continuously improve and expand upon programs to eliminate mercury, reduce and recycle waste, source products sustainably, and more. Winning facilities must demonstrate that they are recycling at least 15 percent of their total waste, have reduced regulated medical waste, are on track to eliminate mercury, and have developed successful sustainability programs in many areas.

“As health care providers, sustainability is at the core of our healing Mission and central to protecting the health of our patients, staff and community,” said Donna Meyers, MSN, RN, Director of Mission Integration/Pastoral Care/Community Benefit at HSHS St Elizabeth’s Hospital. “We take pride in our sustainability programs and the positive impacts they have on the environment and the communities we serve. It is just one of the ways we live out our Franciscan values of reverence for the earth.”

“We can meet on Thursday at 9 a.m. at my house,” suggests Elena Krasnoperova, founder of Calroo Family Organizer.

I know that by then she’ll have written the article we agreed to publish that day, dropped her two kids off at school and finished a phone call with her developers.

How does she do that? While most founders I know still sip their morning coffee at 9 a.m., Krasnoperova has already earned herself a head-start by then.

Krasnoperova is one of the founders I met that led me to the conclusion that mothers are just better entrepreneurs.Science backs me up: Studies by the Kauffman Foundation have shown that venture-backed companies led by a woman create 12 percent more revenue. Also, women-led companies are proven to be more resilient to financial and market crises. Why is that?

The truth is that raising a family might be more similar to running a startup than most people would realize. If you think about it, the list of skills that transfer from parenthood into startup life is longer than you might have expected.

MOM ENTREPRENEURS NEED TO LEARN HOW TO DELEGATE.

With multiple responsibilities on their plates, mothers are often the CEOs and COOs of their families. Delegation is one of the most important survival skills for working moms and startup founders alike. While a young single founder might still be able to scrape by without a team by simply putting in crazy work hours, mom entrepreneurs need to learn how to delegate much earlier. Delegating the grocery list to a family member might be more similar to delegating the design of a logo to a freelancer than most people would think.

Why Mothers Make Better Entrepreneurs.

Page 14: O’FALLON-SHILOH CHAMBER OF COMMERCE CHAMBER …Meyer Bros. Auto Co dba Meyer Honda Millennia Professional Services O’Fallon Assembly of God Church Painting with a Twist Progressive

HAVING A FAMILY FORCES YOU TO THINK PRACTICALLY AND PRIORITIZE THE RIGHT THINGS.

Kelly and Ron Curtis started their music academy just weeks after their baby son was born. Within six months, they hit their revenue goal -- the baby forced them to think practically and was the biggest catalyst in prioritizing revenue over vanity metrics.

Juan Felipe Campos, partner at Google Launchpad’s Manos Accelerator explains, “I find myself constantly using Ron and Kelly’s Curtis Music Academy as a perfect case study when working with early stage startups. The No. 1 problem I see with young entrepreneurs is a lack of practicality and intention with how they spend their time. These founders would rather work on a new feature of their product or spend time behind a spreadsheet than working on sales. Parent-led startups don’t have that luxury.”

THEY KNOW HOW TO GET A LOT DONE IN LITTLE TIME.

Have you ever tried to have a conversation with a mother of a 2-year-old while she is chasing her toddler around the restaurant? I have. It’s admirable to watch. Maria Jose Palacio, founder of Progeny Coffee and mother of a 2-year-old, has taught me what mastery of multitasking really means. During the last two years of her business, her daughter has been with her at every business meeting. This time spent together has not hampered the success of her business. On the contrary, within a few months her fair trade coffee has made it into the shelves of five major retailers, she landed a partnership with a major tech company and Progeny launched an online subscription service.

How do mothers like Palacio manage to do so much in such a distracting environment? They know how to carve out focus time for themselves and get a lot done in those cherished hours, while other founders often waste hours and hours in front of their screens checking emails or scrolling through their newsfeed. Palacio told me that on average she gets about four to six hours of work done a day while her daughter sleeps or is taken care of by her husband. She shared that by now she gets more done in four hours than she used to do in an eight-hour work day by focusing on the most important tasks first.

THEY HAVE A STRONGER SENSE OF VISION AND KNOW WHEN IT’S TIME TO PIVOT.

Having kids sets completely new priorities in your life. Your “why” suddenly becomes clear and strong: You want to create the best life possible for your family.

Building a company on the side is extremely hard. You need to constantly justify the huge time and effort in front of yourself and your family. “Do I really believe in my business that much, that I’d rather spend time in the office than with my family?” The moment this question can’t be answered with “yes” anymore, mom founders are ready to pivot instead of dragging this decision out due to pride or lack of direction. This makes mom founders faster in recognizing when it’s time to pivot.

THEY KNOW HOW TO INSPIRE AND MOTIVATE A TEAM.

Mothers and CEOs have another trait in common: They are always in sales mode. Both are under constant pressure to inspire, motivate and entertain their team, investors and clients. Mothers are true masters of negotiation and sales. Which is harder: Selling a rebellious kid on the fact that cleaning up his room is actually a fun game, or selling a big enterprise client on signing a contract with your company?

Nathan Harris, founder of Ease, shared with me that many of the skills he applies in business nowadays remind him of tactics that he learned from his mom, a single mother of two. Although she has never been an entrepreneur her advice on productivity, conflict management and leadership have been essential in his journey as an entrepreneur.

Running a business and raising a family is definitely a challenge. However, lessons learned from rockstar female entrepreneurs in my network have taught me that the endeavor is possible with a little help from outside, great time management skills and lots of persistence. If you are thinking about starting a business but are scared of what that would do to your family, consider the fact that many of your parenting skills may actually transfer over into entrepreneurship.

Wellness is defined as “not only the absence of disease, illness or stress, but the presence of purpose in life, active involvement in community, enriched relationships, good health and happiness. Today’s seniors are living longer and healthier than ever, partly due to advances in medicine, knowledge of prevention, better living options, trends of being active and a more social lifestyle.

The trend started in May, 1963 with President Kennedy, as he made a proclamation to take better care of our Senior Citizens, as most didn’t live past the age of 65 due to poor healthcare, living conditions and lack of money. Later, May became “Older Americans Month”, as a reminder to each president after to continue to promote better “quality of life” for our seniors.

The Apartment Community honors our seniors, not only in May, but throughout the year. Our “Life Enrichment” team is diligent in offering activities, exercises and events to incorporate the many dimensions of wellness: physical, social, spiritual, intellectual, environmental, and vocational. These dimensions of wellness help us to focus on “whole person” wellness; body, mind and soul.

The following dimensions help us to promote a “healthier” well-being:

Physical: Regular exercise can help seniors improve strength, balance and mobility, decrease illness, and prevent falls.

Social: Social interactions help prevent isolation that can lead to depression and loneliness. It is vital in developing meaningful relationships and a sense of belonging!

Spiritual: Staying connected with your spiritual beliefs and values helps give meaning to existence and purpose in life. It helps to comfort the body, mind and soul.

Intellectual: Continuing to find ways to expand your skills and knowledge throughout your life is helpful in keeping your mind active and fit, and can help with memory issues and overall brain function.

Environmental: Staying active by connecting with the outdoors promotes a sense of freedom and exposure to nature often makes us feel better.

Vocational: Finding a way to stay productive is important at any age. For most this gives “purpose” and provides us with personal satisfaction and “self-worth”.

The concept of incorporating many dimensions of wellness is important for everyone as we are all aging. We have come a long way with caring for our seniors, but we have exceeded this by focusing on “whole-person” wellness. May is a time to remind us of what we will do next to continue this trend of “healthy aging.”

Kelly Barbeau Marketing/Communications ManagerHSHS St. Elizabeth’s Hospital

Multi-tasking is a myth. In this digital age when there is so much information at our fingertip and emails in our inboxes, many are tempted to double up on tasks at the same time to try to get more things done.

But, ask yourself: Are you getting them done well?

Research shows that the amount of mistakes increases dramatically when your concentration is divided.

Practice the mindset to complete the one task you are working on before moving to the next. If find your mind wandering to another task, stop and take a deep breath to refocus on one thing at a time.

Do you regularly schedule meetings or conferences for your company? If so, it’s probably about that time that you start to plan your monthly or quarterly gathering again. If you’re like most companies, you are going to instinctively schedule it in the same room as you always do without much thought. While there is nothing wrong with convening in your standard, go-to conference room, being in the same office space for every meeting can be boring and uneventful, causing your discussions to become stale and unproductive. Business meetings don’t have to take place in the same tired location. Try something new!

Instead of convening all your employees in an enclosed, suffocating conference room, why not consider someplace unconventional? This will allow attendees to break out of their typical environmental mind-set and generate creative ideas.

A change of scenery can be rewarding and productive! Participants are more likely to remember a meeting if they are excited about where it was held. Think about some of your favorite memories; I’m sure you can recall not only the physical surroundings, but the ambiance, the smells, and the overall feeling you had that day. All good memories are born from good experiences.

Don’t host a boring meeting or conference. Think outside the box for your next meeting venue!

BE A STAR AT YOUR NEXT MEETING OR CONFERENCE! HOST AT AN UNEXPECTED VENUE AND INCREASE

PARTICIPATION AND PRODUCTIVITY.

Marcus Theatres “Take Five Lounge” inside the O’Fallon Cinema is the perfect place to host a casual meeting or conference.

The same applies to producing memorable meetings: The setting of your event is crucial in crafting an unforgettable experience. A change in scenery can boost morale, especially when some sort of activity is involved. Switching up the type of venue will not only create a refreshing change of pace, but also increase attendance. As the planner of these events, you may be worried about pulling it all off on your own. After all, you have a busy schedule! Most venues offer onsite assistance with set up and planning, so don’t be shy about asking. Additionally, hosting your next meeting off-site typically means no set-up or clean-up time for you! Everything should be ready to go when you get there, saving you precious time.

Not sure what type of venue would be great for your next meeting? Try a popular winery or brewery. Not only is the scenery different, but you can stay for a happy hour after the meeting. When your favorite sports team is on the road, look a sporting venue and incorporate a tour of the facility. The movie theatre is another great option. If you are training or giving a presentation, you can project onto the big screen. Everyone will surely be able to see that! Finally, weather permitting, try a rooftop restaurant or a park and include some outdoor games for team building.

Whatever venue you decide on, injecting a bit of excitement and fun into your meeting is a sure way to get, and keep, the attention of your guests.

Ready to book a fun and exciting venue for your next meeting or conference? Marcus Wehrenberg Theatres has everything you need in one place for a great meeting. Put your presentation on

the big screen and cater your lunch from one of one new banquet menus. Beyond the auditorium, there are additional rental options including conference rooms, designated rental areas and even the Take Five Lounge. Give Marcus Theater’s a call today to learn how you can be the “Star” of your next meeting or conference!

Road Construction:Old Collinsville/Milburn School Roundabout: Starting on May 1st, construction began on this new roundabout. The intersection will not be closed to traffic until after school ends for the summer. Like other projects in this area, we hope to have it reopened before school returns next year. This project will reconstruct the intersection as a roundabout to accommodate the increased traffic. There will be detours through Savannah Hills and Augusta Greens while the intersection is closed.

Green Mount Road/Central Park Intersection: The exact starting date has not yet been established, but during the summer months, the intersection of Green Mount Road and Central Park will undergo construction to add additional turn lanes. At no time will the entire intersection be closed, but there will be intermittent lane restrictions throughout the project.

The new lanes will help ease traffic in this important intersection near Exit 16. It is expected that this project should be complete in the fall of 2018.

Asphalt Overlay Program: This past year, we commissioned a study to determine the condition of every street in O’Fallon. This study helps us decide which streets to address first, and the best method of maintaining the quality of the street. This is a long-term maintenance program, so a portion of

O’Fallon’s streets will be addressed each year. Some of these streets may receive patching, some may receive an overlay, and in some cases, they may need to be rebuilt. This year, we will address the streets in the following areas:

• Westbrook and Parkridge Estates Subdivisions• Ridge Prairie Heights Subdivision• Manors at Fairwood Hills Subdivision• Cedar Meadows Subdivision

Road construction can sometimes be frustrating and inconvenient, but like any improvement project, the long-term positive results will outweigh the temporary

h a r d s h i p . With any project, we plan and take steps to reduce any inconvenience that these projects may cause.
