WHAT IS NZ MODEL UN?

Page 3: NZ Model UN 2013 Promo Booklet

NZ Model UN is an unparalleled educational and social experience. Held over four days, the event is a unique opportunity for 240 secondary students to engage with passionate and inspiring peers to discuss world issues.

The NZ Model UN conference simulates the real workings of a United Nations assembly. Students are presented with the opportunity to step into the shoes of international diplomats and represent member states of the UN. Through diplomacy and negotiation, delegates seek ways for the world community to find solutions to global concerns that align with their nation’s interests.

This is a fun, interactive way to experience first-hand the dynamics and decision-making processes that guideinternational relations.

If you enjoy socialising with like-minded individuals who care about the global issues, you will enjoy the challenging and rewarding experience of attending NZ Model UN. Not only do you get to take on a diplomatic persona, and defend the policies of thecountry you are representing but you also get to discuss and learn about current international issues. Through participation in the conference, you will develop independent research skills, debating and negotiating skills, and expand your knowledge base on international affairs. So if you have an enquiring mind, enjoy intelligent conversation and like to have fun, NZ Model UN is perfect for you.

DETAILS

DATENZ Model UN will take place from Thursday 5th to Sunday 8th of July 2013. These dates fall near the end of Term 2 for secondary students.

VENUENZ Model UN will be held at Victoria University Wellington. Locat-ed in the vibrant capital city, it is a convenient distance from the CBD and a short walk away from restaurants, accommodation and social activities organised for the conference.

COMMITTEES Committee sessions are the staple of a Model UN, where you get to debate resolutions from the stance of a member state. Each delegate will participate in three committee sessions on different issues. The final day is spent in the plenary session where all 240 delegates will have the chance to take part in debating resolutions on a larger scale.

DELEGATE TRAINING

For delegates stepping into the world of NZ Model UN for the first time, online resources will be provided prior to the conference and training workshops will be held at the conference. Delegates will be armed with the skills and knowledge to get the most out of the conference.

GUEST SPEAKERS To enhance the educational experience, fascinating guest speak-ers will give presentations and answer questions to prepare del-egates for committee sessions. Their passion and real world expe-rience will bring the theme of the conference to life.

OUTREACHThe goal of the Outreach Programme is to inspire delegates to be a force of positive change on a local, national and global scale starting with their communities. It is a practical extension of the conference, where delegates can localise the global issues raised by the conference and be empowered to initiate change at a grass roots level. This year’s outreach will focus on designing innovative solutions and demonstrate the power of collective action.

AMAZING RACEA scavenger hunt around Wellington gives delegates a chance to make friends, explore the city and participate in fun challenges. This year, delegates will also get the chance to interact with not-for-profit organisations to learn about what they do and how to get involved.

SOCIAL EVENTSThere are plenty of opportunities to relax and socialise. After a hard day’s work solving the world’s issues, there are plenty of op-portunities to relax and socialise. Get to know other delegates at regional grouping dinners, hosted by Wellington’s most popular restaurants. Then suit up and throw on your dancing shoes for the highlight of the social calendar: the ball at Amora hotel. NZ Model UN is an educational and social event not to be missed.

THIMUNThere are many opportunities that come from attending NZ Model UN. One amazing opportunity is the chance to apply for the THI-MUN 2014 delegation and travel around Europe for two weeks. It all starts with NZ Model UN!

THEME:LOOKING BEYOND THE MILLENNIUM DEVELOPMENT GOALS

Page 7: NZ Model UN 2013 Promo Booklet

Eight international development goals, known as the Millenium Development Goals, were set by the UN in 2000. The steps that member states have taken towards achieving these goals has touched many lives. This momentum needs to be sustained, regardless of whether the UN’s targets are reached by the 2015 deadline. It is time to leverage the progress we have made and look towards the future

At the conference, delegates work together to outline the way forward for our world. This year’s resolutions will explore the principles which underpin the Millenium Development Goals and consider what long term goals to set beyond the maturity date. With the deadline that the UN set for the Millennium Development Goals fast approaching, this theme is highly relevant. NZ Model UN 2013 will offer delegates an opportunity to apply their ingenuity to create lasting change.

All our Conference Assistants will carefully handpicked, so the competition is fierce. However, those who get through are the people who make the conference experience what it is; the most dynamic, educational, and empowering four days a young person can find in New Zealand.

Conference Assistants are invaluable to the machinery of NZ Model UN. Conference Assistants participate in all aspects of the conference, in a wide variety of tasks that include; facilitating delegate workshops, participating in the Outreach Programme, and leading delegate workshops. Furthermore, Conference Assistants are tasked with taking a proactive role in ensuring the welfare of the delegates they come across, as well as the team they work with.
