Steelite Application Drivers: High strength, light weight Steelite is the ideal choice where today’s environment demands a substantial increase in bollard pull. Steelite products are available in 12 strand roundline or in Superline construction. Steelite ropes exhibit the high strengths associated with steel yet are very low weight, allowing them to float in water. This low weight makes Steelite easy to handle for both the tug and ship’s crew and enables a quick connection to the towed vessel. It has excellent fatigue life and is very durable. Steelite ropes have low extension and consequently a lower lash back energy than other synthetic ropes so ensuring a safer working environment. Today’s towing operations are generally via a winch. As a wire replacement Steelite is very easy to use, in that it’s laying on the drum is not as critical as steel wire and unlike wire Steelite does not damage ancillary equipment so saving on maintenance costs. As a synthetic upgrade to wire, Steelite allows for far greater storage on the winch. A low friction factor enables the rope to slide through leads with minimum resistance and wear. Superline Steelite’s protective cover offers complete protection to the load bearing cores. If wear and tear does occur, a fault can be quickly identified and easily repaired with simple over seizing. A number of specialist extra protective covers are also available. All Steelite products are available in standard and higher strength Xtra grades. Superline Polyester Application Drivers: Hardwearing – Proven track record Superline Polyester is used in applications where larger ropes can be effectively handled and a higher elasticity is required. Increased elasticity can help to reduce shock loads in dynamic situations yet still offer complete control in a towing environment. The core/cover construction gives Superline Polyester an excellent fatigue life. Ocean Towing Several other products are also used for specialised towing applications. Nylon Braided springs are often used in ocean towing for their high elasticity.
