Lifecycle Simulation

Benefits extend right across the balance sheet and include lowerdownstream costs and risks, fewer physical prototypes, changes totooling, reduced material costs, warranty costs, engineeringchanges and less rework.

> Real-time,visual,

managed,open

Lifecycle Simulation enables continuous performance simulationintroduced early in the development process. It allows more designoptions to be reviewed and, therefore, better decisions to be made.

Lifecycle Simulation features the PLM industry’s first end-to-endintegrated simulation solution for the enterprise. The vision enablesSiemens’ largest customers, as well as the smallest, to collaborate usingopen simulation technology. By addressing the growing need to deliverand manage simulation across the entire product enterprise, LifecycleSimulation will help validate ideas faster and accelerate the innovationprocess.

The four keys to Lifecycle Simulation are:Real-time represents Siemens’ ability to solve the world’s largestproblems and get results in time to guide design decisions. Successrequires “raw power”; Siemens’ multi-physics solvers are led by NXNastran which has defined the industry performance benchmark.Whilemost of Siemens’ customers will never need to solve the world’s largestproblems, all customers benefit from results that come in time to drivetheir design.

Visual talks to productivity, critical when considering that mostspecialists spend the bulk of their time developing mathematicalmodels instead of leveraging the results that they generate.By integrating NX withTeamcenter® workflow software to createunique drag-and-drop process tools, Siemens enables engineers toembed their applications and process knowledge into design. Reducingthe time to manipulate both design and analysis geometry and createmodels is a core competence.Automated geometry abstraction, usedto “repair” design geometry, is an example of one of the ways Siemensis reducing the time to build models from weeks to hours.

Managed is about the capture and re-use of knowledge on teamand departmental levels. As products become more complex, engineersare challenged to handle increasing varieties of product data, optimizinghighly complex systems that can include mechanical, electrical andsoftware components. The Lifecycle Simulation strategy is integratedwith the world’s best and most popular data management solution.Siemens will be announcing some new and exciting capabilities inthis area.

Finally, history and complexity demonstrate that no company can orwill satisfy all simulation needs. Partnerships across the competitivedivide are key to customer success and the Lifecycle Simulation strategyhas extended Siemens’ open framework to enable customers to costeffectively leverage and maintain their investments in proprietary and3rd party technology.

When it comes time to spread the benefits of simulation, it isimportant to recognize that not all consumers of simulation datawish to either learn how to use specialist tools or pay the cost ofspecialist applications. Here Siemens is leveraging JT™, a freely availablepublished standard, to enable managers and engineers tocommunicate and efficiently share their insight to new areas ofthe product development process.

A key to business success

Manufacturers rely on product development to deliver productsthat add value to their portfolios. Efficient designs reduce materialand manufacturing labor costs. Designs that have been studied andimproved have lower warranty costs and fewer liability issues.By increasing the effective use of engineering simulation, projectmanagers can reduce many downstream costs and risks.

Improving the process through simulationLifecycle Simulation enables improvements throughout the developmentprocess, allowing exploration of more concepts while reducingdirect costs associated with expensive physical prototypes.Simulation enables faster, more informed decisions that lead tobetter products. Better products have better performance andhigher margins, which directly benefit the bottom line. Integratedwithin enterprise data management systems, Lifecyle Simulationenables management to leverage knowledge of productperformance to reduce development cycle time.

By getting to market faster, companies gain significant financial andmarket share increases, but the benefits reach beyond the balancesheet. Increased confidence that designs will work enablessuppliers to reduce contingencies in contract negotiations, whileefficient process tools and scalable environments release scarceresources to focus on new business opportunities with newrevenue possibilities.

Reducing waste, improving qualityAutomation and infrastructure enhancements bring immediatevalue to engineers, analysts and teams tasked with developing theinfrastructure to increase the use of simulation. Simulation, validation and optimization capabilities are pervasive attributesof NX. NX directly supports core business initiatives like LeanDesign and Design for Six Sigma, helping reduce waste caused bydefects with associated warranty and support costs, improvingperformance and manufacturability and reducing the lengthy andcostly design-build-test cycles of physical prototypes.

Ensuring simulations are performed with up-to-date design geometry even with multiple revisions helps ensure that the predictedperformance characteristics more accurately reflect the final “as-delivered” product.

With advanced technologies, NX significantly reduces the overall cycle time requiredfor typical simulation tasks.

Managed knowledge

PROVEN VALUE

“We have reduced our cycle time partly because we fixed disjointed processes –and partly because of the process changes driven by new IT tools. We are notconstrained by a six-month or nine-month ROI target. We are lookingat this from a holistic perspective – how do you design a car 50 percent morequickly. We know that companies that cannot do this will fade away.Private enterprises have to evolve at a fantastic rate to stay competitive.”

John SullivanChief Engineer for Body Product DevelopmentFord Europe

Excerpt from “Digital Simulation to MeetToday’s Product Development Challenges”Daratech, Inc.White Paper

Transforming the processThe complexity of a managed simulation environment cannot beunderestimated. Starting with requirements that define performance, market and regulatory needs, engineers need an environment that helpsthem understand what if anything is available for re-use; an environmentthat connects their initial concept models to later detail design and testdata; an environment that encourages knowledge capture and re-use –extending the value of simulation to constituencies in the organization.Siemens is unique in its ability to add value. No other company in theworld combines the depth of understanding and market strength in datamanagement with similar strengths in engineering simulation and theability to implement a long-term vision.

Customer experienceThe CAE element was especially crucial for the vehicle body designteam. They have now evolved from a serial, post-design freeze CAEprocess based on multiple departments and manual data exchangeacross multiple CAD/CAE tools to a parallel, integrated body designand analysis process. The streamlined process is enabled by a commonapplication platform and CAE master model, working in the contextof a managed development environment.

Faced with increasing global competitive pressures, a major automotiveOEM decided that the only way to design faster was to fundamentallychange its design, engineering and manufacturing processes. To meet thischallenge, the team identified a number of areas, including improving thegroup’s use of simulation capabilities at all points throughout the productdevelopment process.

A managed development environment for simulation

“A common technology platform is critical to simulationand analysis becoming a mainstream activity within productdevelopment. Siemens is visibly extending its PLM openarchitecture in its simulation framework. This approachenables Siemens’ partners and customers to take fulladvantage of the same knowledge and best practicecapabilities that Siemens leverages for its own applications. We see this as a win-win situation for Siemens and itsextended value chain.”

Don BrownChairmanCollaborative Product Development Associates, LLC

PROVEN VALUE

Siemens is unique. The advanced simulation and CAE technologiesin NX are integrated with the entire NX product developmentand Teamcenter data management portfolios. Data managementcapabilities work “out of the box” and companies can implement acomplete environment for managing CAE data, process andworkflow as part of a wider product development environment. This reduces waste by promoting the re-use of existing designsand engineering knowledge. It synchronizes data and makes itreadily accessible through data mining, visualization and reporting.

Advanced knowledge captureA key strength of the NX environment is its capability to incrementallycapture expert knowledge to automate simulation processes.Companies can harness knowledge with the NX Simulation ProcessStudio to standardize best practices and analysis procedures foruse by less expert users. Companies can implement from thebottom up to help eliminate cultural barriers, reducing risks andincrease effectiveness of the resulting simulation environment.

Processes implemented in NX Simulation Process Studio are selfdocumenting, easy to modify and controlled within the corporatedata management environment. Development teams can moreeffectively promote and implement process standards, supportingbest practice implementations which are a key element ofDesign for Six Sigma and Lean Design initiatives.

Process integrationIntegration is a key to both the efficiency and the effectivenessof a design environment. NX applications have been successfullyintegrated within multi-CAD product development environments.NX Simulation Process Studio demonstrates the value of advancedtools that can be built on a common product foundation thatinclude knowledge-based engineering, system-based modeling, change management, configuration control, product requirementstools and other product lifecycle management capabilities. NicheCAE software suppliers cannot develop and deliver on the processintegration vision.

“It makes sense to start meshing components of the geometry before all the design details have been determined. This allows analysisto start as early as possible. But when we started meshing before the content was frozen,we needed to focus on how to manage theevolving data.
