Hands-on Demonstration: Automatic Follow Periphery Pattern Direction

The new Automatic pattern direction alternates between Inward and Outward per cut level and cut region

condition for Follow Periphery cut patterns in Cavity Mill operations. It utilizes open sides and predrilled

holes whenever possible to access the cut levels and avoid ramping when possible.

Prerequisites:

1. You will need access to NX CAM 9.0.2 in order to run this demonstration.

2. If you haven’t done so already, download and unzip Automatic Follow Periphery Pattern

Direction.7z. You will find the .7z file attached directly to this Tech Tip article in the NX

Manufacturing Forum.

Demo:

1. Open automatic_pattern_direction.prt in NX.

You will begin by observing the behavior of the existing Inward and Outward pattern directions. Then

you will observe the behavior of the new Automatic pattern direction.

2. In the Program Order View of the Operation Navigator, double-click CAVITY_MILL to edit the

operation.

3. Click Cutting Parameters.

Notice that Pattern Direction is currently set to Inward.

4. Click Cancel.

5. Click Verify.

6. Select the 3D Dynamic tab.

7. Select Current Level from the Tool Path list.

8. Slow the Animation Speed down to 1.

9. Click Play.

The problem with using Inward for this operation is that it produces very long slotting motions in

the second and third levels.

10. Click OK to complete the tool path visualization

Outward Pattern Direction

11. Click Cutting Parameters.

12. Select Outward from the Pattern Direction list.

13. Click OK.

14. Click Generate.

15. Click Verify.

16. Click Play.

The problem with using Outward for this operation is that it ramps in on all levels.

17. Click OK to complete the tool path visualization.

Automatic Pattern Direction

You will see how the new Automatic pattern direction optimizes the tool path at each cut level,

eliminating ramping whenever possible.

18. Click Cutting Parameters.

19. Select Automatic from the Pattern Direction list.

20. Click OK.

21. Click Generate.

22. Click Verify.

23. Click Display Options.

24. Select the Pause at Each Level check box.

25. Click OK.

26. Click Play to cut the first level.

The first cut level performs an inward cut from the open side on the first level with no slotting or

ramping.

27. Click Play to cut the second level.

The second cut level slots from the open side to the center and then cuts outward.

28. Click Play to cut the third level.

On the closed pocket the tool is forced to ramp in.

29. Click OK to complete the tool path visualization.

30. Click OK to complete the operation.

The Automatic cut pattern utilizes predrilled holes to access the cut levels and avoid ramping

whenever possible.

31. Double-click CAVITY_MILL_1 to edit the operation.

32. Click Cutting Parameters.

33. Select Automatic from the Pattern Direction list.

34. Click OK.

35. Click Generate.

36. Click Verify.

37. Click Display Options.

38. Select the Pause at Each Level check box.

39. Click OK.

40. Click Play to cut the first level.

41. Click Play to cut the second level.

The second cut level plunges into the hole and cuts outward since it is closer than cutting from

the open side.

42. Click Play to cut the third level.

The third cut level plunges into the hole and cuts outward to avoid ramping.

43. Click OK to complete the tool path visualization.

44. Click OK to complete the operation.

45. Compare the behavior of Automatic to the Inward and Outward pattern directions which ignore

the hole completely.

Another enhancement is that Inward and Outward pattern directions no longer generate

unnecessary cleanup passes around predrilled holes

46. Double-click CAVITY_MILL_INWARD to edit the operation.

47. Click Replay.

Previously, a wall cleanup pass is created around both the boss (1) and the predrilled hole (2).

48. Click Generate.

Now, the cleanup pass is no longer generated around the hole.

49. Click Cancel to dismiss the operation dialog box.

50. Repeat these steps for CAVITY_MILL_OUTWARD to see that unnecessary cleanup passes are

no longer generated for predrilled holes when an Outward pattern direction is used.

Lastly, you will see how Automatic changes the cut strategy based on the shape of the cut region.

Recall how the second cut level in the CAVITY_MILL operation generated a long slot from the open

side to the center before cutting outward when using Automatic.

Automatic will ramp when the slotting length is greater than 10 times the tool diameter.

51. In the Border Bar, select MenuInsertSynchronous ModelingMove Face.

52. Select the face on the end of the part and drag it or type in a distance greater than 100 mm. This

distance is greater than 10 times the tool diameter.

53. Click OK in the Move Face dialog box.

54. Double-click CAVITY_MILL to edit the operation.

55. Click Cutting Parameters.

56. Select Automatic from the Pattern Direction list.

57. Click OK.

58. Click Generate.

59. Click Verify.

60. Click Display Options.

61. Select the Pause at Each Level check box.

62. Click OK.

63. Click Play to cut the first level.

64. Click Play to cut the second level.

The second cut level now ramps because the slotting length is greater than 10 times the tool

diameter.

65. Click Play to cut the third level.

66. Click OK to complete the tool path visualization.

67. Click OK to complete the operation.

68. Close the part without saving.
