The open breeding sheep sale of the season at Lancaster saw a bumper entry of ewes and shearlings forward following the

success of this sale over the previous few years. The current prime lamb prices has had an effect with the trade easier than

previous years and buyers selective about the replacement sheep they buy. Mule gimmer shearlings sold to a top of £141 from

M Barker of Halton Park and £140 from EI Wilson of Sandgate.

Good quality shearlings easily sold in excess of £130. Aged Texel cross ewes sold to a top of £109 from CJ & C Cookson of

Kendal. Mule ewes sold to a top of £94 from George Bell from Kirkby Lonsdale.

A slightly easier trade for OTM Cattle with the start of the school holidays especially for plainer types of cows. A reduced entry of Calves and Stirks to the previous week at Lancaster but a continued strong trade for all forward. All types of calves currently in strong demand and good too sell. Topping the day’s trade was a fantastic British blue calf selling to £595 from J & A Sheerin of Knotts Farm with younger types sell-

ing to £390 from TE & M Kidd of Booth Hall. Hereford bull calves sold to £445 from S Moore of Pilling. Heifer calves sold to a top of £340 for a British Blue

from TE & M Kidd of Booth Hall. Black and White rearing types in strong demand topping at £165 from Drinkall Bros of Catshaw Hall with other stronger types

selling £130 plus with younger rearers £60 plus.

The Prime Lamb trade continues to show little signs of improving with prices in keep-ing with other centres up and down the country as an overall average of 144ppk was

achieved at

Lancaster. A larger proportion of hill bred and none farm assured lambs in the market

today also having an effect on the overall market average. Generally 39kg – 43kg conti-

nental farm assured lambs sold between £18 and £22 above the weight.

J36 Sale Reports Thursday 23rd July Thursday 23rd July Thursday 23rd July Thursday 23rd July The only people leaving disappointed today were the buyers that had not been able to fulfil their requirements with an entry of 78 Calves forward and a ring full of buyers, as many again could have easily been sold to vendors’ advantage. Vendors strongly urged to forward their calves to J36. Plenty of good quality for buyers to choose from and compliments must go to vendors for the quality of calves produced. All beef calves in strong demand topping at £510 and £500 for six week old British Blue bull calves from Dennis Cottam of Hagg Farm. British Blue bulls sold to an average of £441. Limousin weanling bull calves topped at £520 from TK Robinson & Son of Greaves Farm with milk Limousin bull calves making £450 from Brian Wilson of Spout House. Native bred bull’s always good to sell at North West Auctions topping at £400 for a Hereford from R & EA Gardner of Barrowfield with Angus calves selling to £385 from Matthew Rob-inson of Holmescales. Heifer calves topped at £470 for a smart two month old Hereford from Messrs Moss of Congleton. Limousin heifers topped at £450 from Brian Wilson of Spout House with best types of heifers easily selling in excess of £400. A strong Black and White trade for the calves forward today top-ping at £175 from the Inman family of Strickland Hill and others to £170 from Messrs Sowerby, Town Head of Appleby. Well grown rearing types easily selling in excess of £140 with young rearing types selling £70 plus. A consignment of 4 to 5 month old British Blue heifer Stirks from Messrs Sowerby, Town Head of Appleby, achieved a top of £565 and all selling over £515. More stirks required to meet demand.

The fortnightly sale of cattle saw a competitive ringside of buyers for all classes of stock. The sale of Beef Breeding cattle topped at £1420 for Limousin x cows with young Limousin x calves at foot from JH Barker with others at £1380 twice. Store Cattle sold to £1050 for pure Limousin heifers from DJ & MJ Hoggarth, Ulpha with others at £960. A run of British Blue x heifers from A Taylor & Sons sold to £935 with Hereford x heifers at £910. Steers sold to £980 for pure Limousin yearlings again from DJ & MJ Hoggarth with Hereford x to £920 & British Blue x to £910. A larger entry of dairy bred steers sold to a top price of £975 for Swedish Red & White with Holstein Friesians to £720 and British Friesians to £700.

An overall average of 115p/kg was achieved with 60% of the entry being dairy cattle and in mainly out of parlour condition.

Tuesday 28th JulyTuesday 28th JulyTuesday 28th JulyTuesday 28th July The weekly sale of prime sheep saw 1,508 prime lambs forward selling to values in line with the national trend, albeit at a disappointing level Lambs sold to £76 for heavy Texel x from DM & D Cook with others £75 from JN & DJ Bowes. Standard lambs to £65.50 from JG & BJ Escolme and £64 from DE & SM Moorhouse. Light lambs to £61 from D Faraday. Hill lambs now starting to come forward in greater numbers with Masham £57 and Mules £55. Best lambs achieving 160p - 175p/kg with well finished first cross lambs 140p – 150p/kg dependant on weight.

An overall market average of 139p/kg was achieved along with 100% clearance. The Cast Ewe trade was noticeably better at J36 today with buyers expressing more interest. More ewes of all types could easily have been sold with the majority of pens being £8-£10 better than the previous week.

Texel tups sold to a top of £111 from G & W Penny of Marsh Grange Farm. Continental ewes sold to a top of £99 for Charollais ewes from PW Rhodes of Floraire with others selling in the late eighties and into the nineties. Cheviot ewes topped at £80 from RW Nicholson of Lupton. Mule ewes sold towards seventy pounds with leaner sorts looking dearer especially compared to fat ewes which buyers are especially cautious of, Mules averaged £61. Horned ewes a lot better to sell this week, Rough Fell ewes sold to £67 with the better types selling for £55 plus. Swaledales sold to £61 from Gordon Rawsthorne of Scargill with fit Swaledales £50 plus. Straight ewes sold around the £40 with pens of feeding ewes selling better £25 and £32.

sale of Breeding Rams including Suffolk, Texel, Charollais, Beltex and other Terminal

breeding rams. The sale will include a section for individual breeding females.
