In addition to its direct services to Cartagena and Barranquilla (both located at Mexican Gulf) and Buenaventura (Pacific) SACO Shipping offers a fourth direct service to the Colombian capital Bogota since June 1st, 2017.

Direct only: SACO Shipping and South America

SACO’s South America services at a glance · 24 direct export

services · Only NVOCC offering

direct services to Arica, Barranquilla, Bogota, Buenaventura, La Guaira and Puerto Cabello

· 40+ trans-shipment services

· 7 direct import services ex Buenos Aires, Callao, Cartage-na, Guayaquil, Montevideo, Santos and Valparaiso

We may be familiar with the six biggest

metropolises but only when looking at a

map we realise that just two of them are

coastal cities: Rio de Janeiro (11.8 mil-

lion inhabitants) at the Atlantic Ocean

and Buenos Aires (14.3 million) at the

Rio de la Plata. Lima (10.9 million) and

the Pacific port of Callao are some ten

kilometres apart, whereas the distance

between Sao Paulo (20.6 million) and the

port of Santos is approximately 60 kilo-

metres. The ports of Valparaiso and San

Antonio are some 125 and 80 kilometres

respectively away from Santiago (6.3

million). From the Colombian capital

Bogota (9.5 million) one has to drive

about 1,100 kilometres to get to the port

of Cartagena.

Brazil’s official language is Portuguese

whereas Spanish is the dominant lan-

guage in the other twelve South Ameri-

can countries – making communication

a bit easier. Just to compare: The Euro-

pean Union with its currently 28 member

states has 24 official languages.

Geographically South America is so distant from Europe that apart from tourist attractions like Rio de Janeiro’s sugarloaf mountain, Lake Titicaca and the ruins of Machu Piccu we in fact know very little about the fourth biggest continent and its 418 million people.

As shipments no longer have to be unloaded in Cartagena transit times will be faster

and rates more competitive. Boxes will be transported in bond with trucks to Bogota

Zona Franca, Calle 13. Importers benefit in two ways: Firstly, there is a five-year

deadline for customs clearance and secondly, goods can be cleared in parts.

With pride and joy SACO GROUPAIR Brussels recently published

good news for the company and its customers: In June SACO

GROUPAIR Brussels moved to a new warehouse in the cargo area of

Brussels’ airport. Managing Director Wim Sterckx and his team of 20

employees now operate a 4,000 square metres “state-of-the-art”

warehouse. As the office space measures approximately 900 square

metres, parts of it will be sublet to customers allowing them to open

own offices.

The icing on the cake: Forwarders who are not represented at the air-

port are offered to open virtual offices to gain access to SACO

GROUPAIR’s wide range of network services.

SACO GROUPAIR’s main competitive advantage is its strict neutrali-

ty, says Wim Sterckx. Being a member of AirCargoGroup, the leading

alliance of neutral airfreight wholesalers, SACO GROUPAIR can offer

logistic services at over 200 airports in 60 countries. “If you want to

find out more, just give us a call or pop in to say ‘hello’. By the way: In

Brussels we have lots of great food, gorgeous chocolate and probably

the best beer in the universe.”

Introducing:

Philipp Oeding, Lars Reil, Yannic-André Voß

In Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, Ecuador,

Paraguay, Peru and Uruguay SACO

Shipping has own offices. This would

speed up and facilitate internal commu-

nications, says Lars Reil, and therefore

be a big advantage. It also makes solv-

ing problems much easier and allows to

fine-tune internal logistical processes

related to exports and imports.

SACO always strives to offer direct ser-

vices, as they generally are faster, safer

and less expensive. Currently SACO

operates nine direct services to Brazil

and four to Colombia, Bogota was add-

ed to the schedule in early June. To San-

tos, Valparaiso/San Antonio (Chile) and

Callao (Peru) there are actually two

departures a week.

position and that all related services also

function like clockwork. Take Cuba as

an example. Twenty years ago SACO

shipped its first groupage containers

Advantage through experienceLoading a container isn’t exactly rocket

science, adds Philipp Oeding, anybody

could do it. Crucial for success, howev-

er, is to have skilled people at every

there and currently is the only NVOCC

offering direct LCL-services from Europe

to Cuba. SACO’s agent in Havana is

experienced and both parties know and

trust each other for years. This agent

takes care of the handling, does all the

paperwork that is required, has a ware-

house at his disposal, his activities are

covered by insurance and he holds all

prerequisite licences. Any competitor

interested in Cuba’s potential markets

and planning to offer LCL services

would have to learn the same lessons as

SACO: It takes time and a lot of money

to build up an organisation operating like

a well-oiled machine.

South America is a FOB-market “In contrast to the USA nearly 70 per

cent of all exports to South America are

FOB-based”, says Philip Oeding. “This

means the forwarder at the receiving end

decides which NVOCC takes care of the

shipment.” That’s why it is important to

see customers regularly to maintain

contacts and to make contact with

potential customers. This would also

allow to present SACO’s range of servic-

es in detail and to find out what matters

for a forwarder e.g. in Colombia.

What kind of information does he need

to make a decision: rates, transit times,

pre-carriages in Europe or anything

else? In addition it helps to get a feeling

for the “national mentality” as it differs

from country to country.

Preventing problems before they occurRegular visits also deepen the knowledge

about the specifics of ports and ware-

houses in the various markets, states

Lars Reil. “When we know what kind of

equipment is available, we can advise our

customers how to pack the goods best.

We can e.g. recommend using three

smaller boxes instead of a big one, as

the forklift capacity is limited. This helps

preventing problems before they actu-

ally occur. We can also explain that

customs clearance in a particular coun-

try always takes some extra time as the

weight of each packaged item will be

verified.”

A world of its ownAdvising customers and offering hands-

on support are also a priority for him,

says Yannic-André Voß, although han-

dling imports is completely different.

“Our team members are well trained.

When they spot discrepancies in a bill

of lading they pick up the phone or

send an e-mail to prevent shipments

being made with non-conforming doc-

uments. Otherwise goods could be

held up in a transit port on their way to

Germany.” When it comes to importing

dangerous goods or items requiring

clearance by a veterinary authority

communicating is even more important.

Many forwarders overseas wouldn’t

know the financial and penal conse-

quences they have to face if they don’t

comply with regulations in force. Visit-

ing customers regularly would make it

much easier to share such vital infor-

mation, confirms Yannic-André Voß.

“Meeting face-to-face helps solving

and preventing many problems.”

SACO at the transport logistic

Networking – digital and across all borders – was the

dominant theme, said Stefan Rummel, Managing

Director of Messe München. Flexport CEO Ryan

Petersen explained in a panel discussion that every

company had to become a software company. Alexan-

der Dobrindt, German Federal Minister for Transport

and Digital Infrastructure, stated that logistics is on the

threshold of the most exciting phase of innovation in

recent decades and will continue to be a key factor in

modern economies.

As young people are fascinated by technology this

could serve as a trigger to raise their interest in trans-

port logistics. In an interview on the red sofa of DVZ

Andrea Briks talking to

DVZ-editor Sebastian Reimann

The world’s leading trade fair for

logistics, mobility, IT and supply

chain management this year again

proved to be a crowd puller: 2,162

exhibitors from 62 countries

welcomed more than 60,000 trade

visitors at their booths in nine

exhibition halls. Exhibitors included

SACO Shipping, PCH, PCG and

SACO GROUPAIR.

Andrea Briks, Managing Director of SACO Shipping,

pointed out how important it is to demonstrate the

many sides and perspectives of a career in logistics

(here you can see the interview in full length: https://

www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gqgv7lUHpn8).

SACO Shipping sets a good example. Its apprentices

attended the fair and took a close look around includ-

ing a virtual tour of ELVIS’ hub. Talking shop with col-

leagues from many companies continued Wednesday

night at the Zamdorfer Biergarten where food and

drinks also were to be enjoyed. It was a striking and

joyful proof for the value and importance of meeting

face-to-face – despite all digital networking.

Vocational education is a top priority for SACO Ship-

ping. Both owners, Andrea Briks and Harald Pahl,

attach great importance to a high-class education

being both diversified and customised. With pride we

can state that former apprentices account for a large

part of today’s team.

The concept is simple but sophisticated – learning by

doing. After a few weeks each one of us is assigned a

trade lane and supported by our experienced team

members we do everything from A to Z on our own

responsibility. This is just one of the points making the

education at SACO so interesting.

Regular seminars and training sessions covering sub-

jects like sea freight, dangerous goods, customs clear-

ance and containers provide us with the know-how

that is needed to successfully work in the world of

Meet the SACO trainees

logistics. Very popular especially among new appren-

tices is a seminar on etiquette that SACO offers every

once in a while. Our day-to-day work also includes

attending vocational school and performing tasks like

visiting customs offices once a week and handling the

outgoing business mail.

As we are quite a large group of apprentices scattered

over many offices we do not see each other daily. To

make up for that we hold a monthly meeting to raise

and discuss our requests, wishes and matters we

would like to improve. We also meet after work to relax

and have a drink and a bite.

Should this appear to you like a recruitment ad for new

apprentices it is just an extract of how we experience

our education at SACO – and it’s true.
