FROM THE PRINCIPAL

Welcome back to Term 4, we hope all our students had a restful holiday and are rejuvenated

for a successful end to 2017. Neil White, our Principal, is currently undertaking an acting Educa-

tion Director role based at the Gawler DECD office. This is an exciting opportunity for Neil and

we wish him all the best in this role.

We would like to take this opportunity to wish all of our Year 12 students the very best over

the coming weeks as they finalise their assessment tasks and prepare for their final examina-

tions. We love celebrating with our Year 12s and look forward to our final Celebration Day on

Wednesday 1 November which will start with a breakfast and celebrations on the Northern

Oval starting at 8:00am. Following our celebratory breakfast, Year 12 students will attend final

classes and rehearsals for the evening Presentation Night. Our school community is invited to

attend our Year 12 presentation ceremony commencing at 7:00pm where we celebrate the cul-

mination of 13 years of schooling and present all our graduating students with their Graduation

Certificate.

For all other year levels, Term 4 is the opportunity to continue to work hard and end the year

being the best they can be. All we ever ask of our students is to put in the effort required to

achieve their best, and to take pride in demonstrating their learning to the highest possible

standard.

DOES ATTENDANCE MATTER?

There is a vast body of evidence from decades of research that shows a clear connection be-

tween student attendance at school and success in later life. Regardless of the pathway that a

young person pursues after school, a pattern of repeated absence is nearly always correlated

with difficulties in the workplace and in life generally. It is therefore critical that a school seeks

to bring out the best in young people and takes measures to ensure that students are at school

as consistently as possible.

Our processes for monitoring student attendance are an important part of our capacity to do

the best that we can for your child. In order for these processes to be effective, we require the

support of our families.

You can provide practical support for us in the following ways:

Please notify us as soon as possible if your child is absent from school – phone 85622022.

Please limit the number of absences to those that are absolutely necessary.

Respond to text message that you may receive concerning your child’s absence as soon as

possible.

Ensure that your mobile phone number is kept up to date in the school records. If you have

recently changed phone numbers, please contact the school office on 85622022.

If you want your child to be

successful at school, then

TRANSITION

Term 4 is also an important time for us to welcome a new group of students who join the Nuriootpa High School com-

munity in 2018. You may have read in the Leader that we are looking at enrolling our largest cohort of Year 8 students

ever – initial numbers indicate approximately 230 students will be commencing in Year 8!

Our transition process this year in undertaking some changes initiated by Anne Barclay, Assistant Principal and Rob Mo-

resi Year 8 Manager in conjunction with our local CPSW team. There will be three different transition activities for Year 7

students this year. Three separate letters have been sent home from the Primary Schools regarding these events.

Transition Day: There will a full day of Transition lessons for all year 7 students who will attend separate days with their

individual Primary Schools. These transition days will be in Week 5, 13 – 17 November.

Year 7 Wellbeing Day: All year 7 students attending Nuriootpa High in 2018 are invited to a Wellbeing day on Friday 24

November. The day will have a Positive Education focus and is being organise by our Pastoral Care Workers.

Year 7 Participation in year 8 Student Led Conferences: Each Primary School has been invited to attend Nuriootpa High

School on Tuesday 28 November. This will be in the form of an “excursion” to NHS with primary school students travel-

ling together to and from NHS to attend the Student Led Conference for one of our Year 8 students.

If you have any questions or suggestions, please contact Ms Anne Barclay or Mr Rob Moresi who will be coordinating

this.

CHANGES TO SCHOOL CARD ELIGIBILITY

The State government is raising the school card income threshold from next year to help families with the cost of living.

This means that families with 1 child and a gross income of $57,870 in the 2016-17 financial year will be able to apply for

a school card. Application forms for 2018 will be available from schools or www.sa.gov.au by the end of the 2017 school

year.

HEALTH EDUCATION

We would like to take this opportunity to share with you our Health Education Curriculum. In light of the political de-

bate currently surrounding the marriage laws we would like to assure families that our Health Education Curriculum at all

year levels will remain unchanged. An organisation called SHINE SA supports our school with professional development,

curriculum, resources, advice and advocacy to deliver a comprehensive and up-to-date relationships and sexual health

education program.

SHINE SA’s Years 8-10 comprehensive relationships and sexual health curriculum is mapped to Australian Curriculum:

Health and Physical Education and DECD Keeping Safe: Child Protection Curriculum.

Families wanting to familiarise themselves with the Australian Curriculum for Health can visit the ACARA website: https://

www.australiancurriculum.edu.au/f-10-curriculum/health-and-physical-education/

As an accredited DECD Safe School with a focus on Positive Education and Positive Psychology, our education for young

people is focused around respectful relationships, growth mindsets and resilience. Further information about the DECD

Safe Schools Anti Bullying Initiative can be found at https://www.decd.sa.gov.au/supporting-students/health-e-safety-and-

wellbeing/safe-schools

The time has almost come to say farewell to our talented Year 12 students for 2017. Across the board for grades the students

have been very successful in their chosen subject areas. They have achieved 22% A’s, 40% B’s and 32% C’s which is an out-

standing result and we are very proud of their dedicated efforts.

This term has culminated in the completion of major assignments, revision for exams, preparation for Presentation Night, organ-

ising formal outfits and booking Schoolies accommodation and buses, whilst stressing about deadlines and work. The students

have been working steadily all year and with their exceptional work ethic we are very confident that they will continue to reach

their goals in the final few weeks of their assessments including their exams.

YEAR 12 CELEBRATION DAY

On Wednesday 1 November, the students will come to school dressed in a revised version of the school uniform to celebrate

their last official day at Nuriootpa High School. A casual breakfast at 8am will start the day on the Northern oval followed by

some final lessons in the morning before participating in a rehearsal for the Presentation Night. We are looking forward to shar-

ing this final school day with our students.

YEAR 12 PRESENTATION NIGHT

Next Wednesday 1 November, the year 12’s will be officially acknowledged at the Presentation Night in the stadium starting at

7pm. All students will receive a Graduation Pack as a memento of their time here at Nuriootpa High School. Over 150 awards

will be presented to worthy winners for their commitment to school life, leadership, motivation, academic achievement in sub-

jects as well as merit and school values awards. These awards would not be possible without the generous, enduring support of

our Barossa community sponsors who continue to provide donations to the school for this very important celebration. We

would like to sincerely thank them all for their continued support of our Presentation Night.

THE FORMAL

On Thursday 30 November the formal will take place at the InterContinental Hotel in Adelaide starting at 6.00pm and finishing

at 11.00pm. All students have been busy preparing for this important evening as it will be the last time that they will get the

opportunity to see all of their fellow classmates together. It will be a night full of reflection, fun and dancing, whereby the stu-

dents get their chance to walk on the red carpet and be glamorous for a night!

FINAL THANK YOUS

It has been an incredible year filled with many memorable moments that will remain firmly entrenched within the memories of

this amazing group of students. I would like to take this opportunity to thank the parents and caregivers who supported their

sons and daughters through the turbulent yet rewarding Year 12 experience. I would also like to thank my dedicated Home

Group team and all the Year 12 teachers for their encouragement, enthusiasm and professionalism in supporting this incredible

group of young people. Thanks must also go to Mrs Kirsty Gebert for her outstanding leadership, caring nature and positive

attitude throughout the year.

I have had the ultimate privilege to have managed this year level for the past 2 years and have thoroughly enjoyed watching

them grow and mature as the year progressed. I shall miss their friendly, sometimes mischievous interactions but on the whole

they have acted with respect and have overcome many obstacles with sheer resilience and pride. “Having a growth mindset”

was our motto from the start and I am confident that this group of year 12’s will, continue to grow, reach their goals and make

valuable contributions to their community in the future.

Chris Gambell - Year 12 Year Level Manager

Charlie Bittner

On 1 January 2018, Year 12 student Charlie Bittner will begin a tour of England

and France as part of the Wanderers Australia Netball Squad. The tour lasts for 18

days and the girls are accompanied by experienced supervisors and advanced /

high performance netball coaches.

Most squad members are the only player from their school or club or even associ-

ation, so it is a great opportunity for Charlie and the other squad members to cre-

ate friendships and improve upon their netball abilities. On previous tours individ-

ual players are from as far north as Cairns, to as far south as Hobart, as far west as

Karratha and Perth, Darwin in the north, and everywhere in-between .

The tour begins in London before making their way through regional England,

and heading across to France for the final couple of days of the tour to visit Paris

and tour the World War One battlefields of the Somme, particularly where the

ANZACS featured. Along the way many netball trainings and games will take

place.

Congratulations to Charlie on being selected on the tour and wish you the greatest

of luck for the trip and beyond.

Student Led Conferences (SLC) develop students’ ability to reflect on their learn-

ing, their future goals, develop bravery and leadership. The outcomes of our SLC

are linked to the ACARA General Capabilities.

Year 8 students are preparing for their individual conference during Student De-

velopment time with the assistance of their Home Group teacher, Year level Man-

ager and Assistant Principal. They will present 3 - 4 topics. Their compulsory item

looks at their personal subject selections and reasoning for 2018.

Choice items include:

‘The assignment/project I am most proud of in 2017’,

‘Most enjoyable moment at school in Year 8’,

‘My recommendation to Mr White to improve the school’ and others.

On Tuesday 28 November (Week 7), Year 8 students will only be required to be at school for their 20 minutes conference time.

They will present to a panel consisting of a family member, Year 7 student and staff member. Grades will be allocated and ap-

pear on the Term 4 report. Bookings for family members are made online with information on the link via the brochure that

FOOTY COLOURS DAY

On Friday the 15 September we had a dress up non-uniform day. For this non-uniform day the theme was footy colours or to

dress up in your favourite team colours. A range of people dressed up on the day and it was good to see such an involvement in

our school for a dress up day. The SRC also brainstormed what other activities we wanted to incorporate. We decided on a

bake sale, music in the courtyard and a ‘longest footy kick’ competition at lunch. Everyone in the SRC pitched in to make the

day come to life and the bake sale was successful as always. We raised a total of just over $800 which will be donated to the

Fight Cancer Foundation.

The winners of the footy long kick competition were Chloe Tidswell for the girls and Sam Falland for the boys. The prizes for

footy long kick consisted of two $20 Sport Power vouchers. All of the donations were given to the Fight Cancer Foundation.

The Fight Cancer Foundation is a national charity dedicated to providing care, treatment and support for cancer patients and

their families and funding vital research into cancer treatment and cures. Fight Cancer Foundation support patients and their

families in getting the care they deserve. In total $800 was donated to this charity which was an awesome effort and we’d like

to thank all the students for their participation on the day!

THE INAUGURAL ABORIGINAL LEARNERS IN STEM CONGRESS

Flayme Rollins and Anthony Coyne this week attended the Inau-

gural Aboriginal Learners in STEM Congress which coincided with

the International Astronautical Congress at the Adelaide Conven-

tion Centre. The Congress was attended by 90 Aboriginal students

who demonstrated an interest towards STEM in their written ap-

plications.

Students received a T-Shirt which was designed by the Young Abo-

riginal STEM Thinkers of South Australia (YASTSA). These students

also co-designed and delivered activities on the day. The Congress

was held at Generation Next and The Adelaide Convention Cen-

tre and opened with a Welcome to Country by Uncle Moogy.

The guest speaker, Chris Ferguson, former NASA astronaut was a

particular highlight. He captured the audience as he spoke of his

experiences as an astronaut on the Space Shuttle and at the Inter-

national Space Station. He also explained the effects that space travel has on the human body and about his job now as Director

of Boeing and the commitment this company has to developing a Global Space Program.

Students then participated in a ‘Tickle my droid robotic activity’ run by the Space Science Education Centre at the Adelaide Con-

vention Centre. They were also treated to viewing all of the Astronautical displays and presentations.

PROCESSED MEATBIRDS FOR SALE

Agricultural Studies students are raising a batch of meat birds which are being processed in

early December. They will weigh on average 2.0 - 2.5Kg dressed and are excellent eating – previous customers

regularly comment on the tenderness and flavour of the roasted birds.

They have been raised in a stress free environment at very low stocking rates.

They are $6.50 per kilogram and would be an excellent addition to a Christmas dinner.
