o FEATURES
Compact solid state circuit design Suitable for wide range of x-ray Proportional and gas flow type of
detectors.
Rise time 100 nano sec.
It is a charge sensitive pre-amplifier uses N-channel FET, in the inputwith charge collection capacitor in the feedback of the operationalamplifier.
CHAPTER - I
INTRODUCTIONCharge sensitive Pre-amplifier PA320 is designed for use with gas filled proportional detectors, X-ray proportional detectors, BF-3 & He3 neutron detectors etc. Users will have the choice to change the load resistors & charge sensitive feedback capacitor according to the gain & sensitivity requirement for a specific application. Charge sensitive pre amplifier consists of an operational amplifier with capacitive feedback & uses an N-FET in the input stage. Output driver transistor is capable of driving a 100 ohms impedance coaxial cable.
Detector output is also brought out from the second stage, for using it for data acquisition purpose. This unit is provided with built in comparator with threshold adjustment to give TTL output for counting applications.

INSTALLATION
A. CONTROLS / CONNECTORS:
EHT (MHV socket) : High Voltage connector, at which the EHT supply is provided
to connect to the X-ray proportional counter / gas proportional
/ He-3 / BF3 / Neutron detector for detector biasing.
Output (Linear) : BNC Co-axial connector at which output from the Pre-
Amplifieris generated for connecting to shaping amplifier.
Output (TTL) : This is a TTL output after discriminator provided to cut-off noise.
LV (socket) : Five pin circular connector at which the LV supply voltages
are provided from the NIM Standard instrumentation bin & power
supply unit. Power up the PA320 is fed.
Detector (MHV socket) : MHV connector, to which detector is connected preferably
through a short RG 59 cable. Cable end has to match with
the appropriate connector on the detector.
B. EXTERNAL CONNECTIONS:
Having connected the Pre-amplifier to the detector as explained earlier, proceed to make
the connection as follows:
1. Using the HV cable (MHV to MHV) connect the OUTPUT from High Voltage Unit, type
HV502 /HV503 of NUCLEONIX make or its equivalent to the HV connector (MHV
socket) on PA320.
2. Using Co-axial signal cable connect from the OUTPUT BNC connector on PA320 to the
INPUT of any Pulse shaping Amplifier typically LA520 or AF521or Spectroscopy amplifier.
3. Using LV - I/O, 5 core cable connect to the "LV" connector on PA320 to the LV connector
on Instrumentation bin & power supply. If your instrumentation bin has a 9-pin D-connector,
then you wire up one end with 9 pin D-connector & the other end with 5 pin I/O connector
to mate with corresponding connector on pre-amplifier.

Block diagram of Charge sensitive pre amplifier of PA320 of Nucleonix make
Block diagram description: It can be seen from the block diagram, HV input to the detector is filtered further by an RC filter of R1 (1meg ohm) & capacitor C1 (0.01uf, 2KV). Detector such as an X-ray proportional detector, gas proportional detector or a Neutron detector BF3 or HE-3 IS connected at the MHV /SHV socket provided on the pre amp unit, thru appropriate co-axial cable. Signal from this is ac coupled & applied to the gate input of FET. Followed by this is a charge integrating op.amp with a feedback capacitor of 1pf which integrates the charge collated to give voltage pulse output. Followed by charge integrator output, there is a transistor driver, PZ- circuit and a non inverting op.amp stage, which provides further voltage gain required.
Trimpot (P1) on second stage op.amp can be used to adjust gain.Signal from the output of this second stage is fed to a comparator which helps in cutting of any noise signal. Output of this comparator is fed to a mono stable to get a fixed width TTL output signal. Both Linear output from the second stage & TTL outputs have been brought out for external use & processing or further amplification & acquisition.

NOTE (2): To Change charge sensitivity gain,One has to change capacitor (C7) value. By default it is 1pf. One can increase it to 2.2pf or 3.3pf etc. Increasing the value decrease inversely charge sensitivity.
NOTE (3):Further Signal Voltage can be manipulated by P1 – trimpot which is in the op.amp (U2) feedback. Manipulation of P1 alters gain in the second stage.
