INTRODUCTION

This is the twenty-fifth edition of Reference Data SeriesNo. 2, Nuclear Power Reactors in the World, which ispublished once per year, to present the most recent reac-tor data available to the Agency. It contains the followingsummarized information:

– General information as of the end of 2004 on powerreactors operating or under construction, and shutdown;

– Performance data on reactors operating in theAgency’s Member States, as reported to the IAEA.

The information is collected by the Agency by circulat-ing questionnaires to Member States through the desig-nated national correspondents. The replies are used tomaintain computerized files on general and design dataof, and operating experience with, power reactors.

The Agency’s Power Reactor Information System(PRIS) comprising the above files provides all the infor-mation and data previously published in the Agency’sPower Reactors in Member States and currently pub-lished in the Agency’s Operating Experience with NuclearPower Stations in Member States and available at theInternet address http://www.iaea.org/programmes/a2.Enquiries should be addressed to:

Definitions

Performance Factors

EGLF (%) = ¥ 100

REG

(REG – PEL – UEL) ¥ 100UCF (%) =

REG

where

LF (%) is the load factor, expressed in per cent.EG is the net electrical energy (MW(e)·h) produced

during the reference period under consid-eration.

REG is the net electrical energy (MW(e)·h) whichwould have been produced at maximumnet capacity Cn (MW(e)) under continu-ous operation during the entire referenceperiod.

UCF (%) is the unit capability factor, expressed in percent.

PEL is the planned energy loss: the energy(MW(e)·h) that was not produced duringthe period because of planned shut-downs or load reductions due to causesunder plant management control. Energylosses are considered planned if they are scheduled at least four weeks inadvance.

UEL is the unplanned energy loss: the energy(MW(e)·h) that was not produced duringthe period because of unplanned shut-downs, outage extensions, or load reduc-tions due to causes under plant manage-ment control. Energy losses are consid-ered to be unplanned if they are notscheduled at least four weeks inadvance.

Construction StartDate when first major placing of concrete, usually for thebase mat of the reactor building, is done.

First CriticalityDate when the reactor is made critical for the first time.

Grid ConnectionDate when the plant is first connected to the electrical gridfor the supply of power.

Commercial OperationDate when the plant is handed over by the contractors tothe owner and declared officially to be in commercialoperation.

ShutdownDate when the plant is officially declared to be shut downby the owner and taken out of operation permanently.

Units and Energy Conversion1 terawatt-hour (TW(e)·h) = 106 megawatt-hours (MW(e)·h).For an average power plant,1 TW(e)·h = 0.39 megatonnes of coal equivalent (input)

= 0.23 megatonnes of oil equivalent (input)

Note: Net capacity and energy values are used in allcalculations.
