On November 1, 2013, we experienced the fourth of seven exact 90° alignments of these two outer planets. 1 In early 2014, we enter the heart of the transformational process symbolized by Uranus and Pluto in square, especially as they align with Jupiter in Cancer and Mars in Libra, form- ing a grand cross in the cardinal signs of the tropical zodiac. This grand cross intensifies in April. In fact, Mars will be energizing the sign of Libra for eight months starting on December 7, 2013, including a retrograde period from early March to mid May 2014 (see Diagram, below). Normally Mars spends only five or six weeks in a sign. While Mars is in Libra, it completes a grand cross pattern — four planets 90 degrees apart. This grand cross occurs two different times, with the most exact formation happening in April: (1) December 27, 2013 through January 12, 2014 (all four planets within 8° of exact aspect with one another) (2) April 20–24, 2014 (within 1°); April 7 – May 14 (within 8°) Events connected to this intense grand cross in the cardinal signs will shape 2014 and years to come, espe- cially for the United States, with that country’s Sun and Saturn on the receiving end of these transits (see Bill Herbst’s article on page 36 for an analysis of this). No astrological config- uration is inherently harmful, and even problematic ones can be worked with to produce more positive outcomes, but this grand cross signals a very chal- lenging time period for most of us, the likeliest months for instability and crisis being January and April. There will be plenty of energy — and chances to make changes — available to us. How we use it is the question. Will we be reactive or creatively proactive? Are we mature enough to work with and flow with what life will bring to us? For years, astrologers worldwide have been talking and writing about the seven-episode Uranus–Pluto square of 2012–15. On November 1, 2013, we experienced the fourth of seven exact 90° alignments of these two outer planets.1 In early 2014, we enter the heart of the transformational process symbolized by Uranus and Pluto in square, especially as they align with Jupiter in Cancer and Mars in Libra, form-ing a grand cross in the cardinal signs of the tropical zodiac. This grand cross occurs two different times, with the most exact formation happening in April:

(1) December 27, 2013 through January 12, 2014 (all four planets within 8° of exact aspect with one another)

(2) April 20–24, 2014 (within 1°); April 7 – May 14 (within 8°)

Events connected to this intense grand cross in the cardinal signs will shape 2014 and years to come, espe-cially for the United States, with that country’s Sun and Saturn on the receiving end of these transits (see Bill Herbst’s article on page 36 for an analysis of this). No astrological config-uration is inherently harmful, and even problematic ones can be worked with to produce more positive outcomes, but this grand cross signals a very chal-lenging time period for most of us, the likeliest months for instability and crisis being January and April. There will be

plenty of energy — and chances to make changes — available to us. How we use it is the question. Will we be reactive or creatively proactive? Are we mature enough to work with and flow with what life will bring to us? This configuration will show up in all of our lives, in big ways and smaller ways, depending on the placements in our own charts, the charts of family members, the companies we work for, the countries we live in, and so on. It figures to be a turbulent ride.

Nuclear Danger What will the biggest crisis look like? That is hard to say, but aside from the obvious mess in the Middle East, one candidate is Fukushima, Japan. The corporate operators of its nuclear plant are planning to start painstakingly removing fuel rod assemblies from one of the storage pools in a dam-aged building in November 2013, and it may take up to a year to complete the process. It is the most dangerous phase of recovery in terms of potential radiation releases.2

One could make the case that Mars in Libra symbolizes cooperation between military forces or military–civilian partner -

ships. The international community may need to “oppose” Uranus in Aries’ overheated uranium by stabilizing the Fukushima site using military resources. Astrologer Dan Ciubotaru, who authored an article on the chart for Fukushima’s “start of commercial operations” (March 26, 1971) in TMA’s June/July 2011 issue, wrote to me recently that he thinks it will not be until Jupiter leaves Cancer and Saturn leaves Scorpio in late December 2014 that we face the most severe problems at Fukushima; the year 2016 — especially August 2016 — is an extremely dangerous time for radiation releases there. Some other things to watch for with Uranus–Pluto– Jupiter–Mars through May 2014 are: an exceptionally active tornado season in the U.S.; volcanic eruptions and destruc-tion involving fire (early January and April); accidents/attacks involving mines, oil wells, or other underground facilities such as subways; large oil spills; expanded use of military technol-ogies and robotics (and leaks of secret technologies); corpo-rate/government action to regulate or control the Internet; and economic volatility, with surprisingly high levels of inflation.

Rising to the Challenge There will also be many positive events to point to when the smoke clears. When we are challenged, we discover our true capacity for generosity, creativity, and hard work. Keep in mind that the planets involved in the grand cross represent strong yang forces, and that they are positioned in the active and dynamic cardinal signs. Breakthroughs will be made in areas that have frustrated us over the years. We’ll have oppor-tunities to be decisive and change limiting habits. As astrolo-ger D. K. Brainard wrote about Mars in Libra, in general:

Rather than allowing Mars in Libra to sit back and rail at the evildoers or bicker about the injustices in the world, call it out. Challenge it to do something worthwhile and creative, rather than poisoning the well for everyone. Libra is one of

the most creative signs of the zodiac and once Mars in Libra gets out of his pity-party and gets to work, together these energies can create amazing opportunities that really do something about the injustice and imbalance in the world.3

Let’s look at some of the key astrological events of Janu-ary through July 2014, followed by a 12-sign forecast for each Sun and rising sign. The charts shown here are all cast for Washington, D.C. because 2014 will be such a pivotal year for the U.S. in particular.

Happy Cappy New Year Wasting no time at all, 2014 starts with an attention- getting Capricorn New Moon (also a SuperMoon)4 as part of a seven-planet grand cross, because it is within a degree of both Pluto and Mercury, challenged by a tight square to Mars in Libra, another square to Uranus in Aries, and a wide opposi-tion to Jupiter in Cancer. (See Chart 1, p. 26.) This lunation is a powerhouse! Pluto will “speak” via Sun–Moon–Mercury in January — especially the first few days of January — through important world events or surprisingly intense energies in personal rela-tionships of all types. Letting go of what has outlived its evo-lutionary purpose (on the personal as well as the collective level) is an important key to navigating this period. Be sure to get help as needed when dealing with the high voltage of this configuration. Cast for Washington, D.C., the Mars–Uranus opposition is close to the MC–IC axis of this New Moon chart, emphasiz-ing the military and technology (use of military robotics), sud-den surprising events, and an assertive or riled-up public. The Mars-opposite-Uranus aspect is also angular in the 2013 win-ter solstice chart for that location (see chart on page 101), so

January should be (at best) exciting or (at worst) a violent/ volatile month. More newsworthy gun violence or escalation of warfare cannot be ruled out. The January 1 New Moon astrolocality map (not shown here) has Sun–Moon–Pluto on the MC running through Oslo, Berlin, and Rome, so January may be an especially pivotal month for Europe and the Vatican. In Syria, Saturn is on the Descendant, which may reflect the restraining influence of the international community. More predictions for early January: Increased storm strength and larger-than-usual seismic events around this New Moon, with major travel disruption; tense standoffs or mass shootings in the news; a make-or-break time in relationships. Loss, leading to one’s deeper needs being met. Powerful people launch (or announce) major new initiatives to advance their agendas.

Venus in Capricorn Square Mars in Libra At the solstice on December 21, 2013, Venus turns retrograde in the Saturn-ruled sign of Capricorn and drifts back-ward until the end of January. Then, Venus turns direct again while conjunct Pluto, one day after the January 30 New Moon, which is another SuperMoon (see Chart 2). However, Venus doesn’t finally exit Capricorn until March 5. In January and February, it may be difficult to feel that we are getting what we want out of life (or from one another) while beauty-loving Venus is weighed down for such a long time in a sign that is so serious, pragmatic, and work-oriented. It is a good time to remodel one’s home, refinish furniture, or restructure a business, though.

“What about Me?”How do you know what in your

birth chart is affected?

The more planets you have in Aries, Cancer, Libra, or Capricorn in your birth chart — especially between 8° and 17° of those signs — the more likely you are to be influenced by the grand cross formed by Mars, Jupiter, Uranus, and Pluto in 2014. (This applies if you have one of these signs rising, as well.)

Look also to the houses connected by rulership to the planets being transited. For instance, if your natal Venus at 12° Aries is being affected by the grand cross, and you have Taurus (which is ruled by Venus) on your Midheaven, you can expect a turbulent year in career matters and perhaps adventures, for better or worse, with a parent or authority figure.

Any planets or chart angles at 16°–24° Scorpio (or Taurus, Leo, and Aquarius) will be subject to a Sat-urn transit during the next seven months. Saturn’s influence is to delay, withhold, restrict, and test the viability of whatever it contacts.

Neptune remains in Pisces throughout 2014, influ-encing natal planets placed in the early degrees of mutable signs. Neptune is a creative and accepting but potentially confusing and sacrificial planet.

Solar eclipses at 11° Scorpio (early November 2013) and 9° Taurus (late April 2014) energize those degrees for 6–12 months and will likely draw your attention to the houses containing those degrees. Finally, a particularly strong total lunar eclipse at 25° Libra (mid April 2014) adds energy to latter degrees of the cardinal signs.

2014: Riding the Rapids

All charts are cast for Washington, D.C.

* Note the similarity of this January 1, 2014 New Moon chart to the New Moon that occurred on October 4, 2013. (See p. 91 of TMA Oct./Nov. 2013.) In both cases, the lunation activates an outer- planet t-square. In the case of the Jan-uary 1 chart, Mars is also included. The personal and collective events of October 2013 — which many would agree were especially difficult and disorienting — may have been a “dress rehearsal” for the events of January and April 2014.

Chart 2: New Moon SuperMoonJan. 30, 2014

Capricorn Venus and Libra Mars form a square around the time of the Cancer Full Moon in mid January, bringing problematic relationship issues to a boil if feelings have not been discussed constructively. Getting into therapy or a spiri-tual practice at this time will help some of us to avoid a stress-ful breakup. Important people from the past may resurface then. Issues of “usefulness” and contractual or social obliga-tions (Venus in Capricorn) will clash with the need to achieve fairness and balance in partnerships (Mars in Libra). Out of this turmoil arise new solutions, as well as a number of lawsuits. This Venus–Mars square repeats in the latter degrees of Capricorn and Libra just as Mars turns retrograde on March 1 — only eight hours after the New Moon in Pisces. Anger, passion, projection, competitiveness, and impulsiveness are more evident at this time. Important or exciting love relation-ships develop quickly but may be short-lived. Look for a link between events in mid January and early March, as chal-lenging conditions in significant relationships or legal matters (hopefully) evolve. When this lunation is cast for Washington, D.C., nearly stationary Mars is conjunct the MC. (See Chart 3). Note that in all three of the lunation charts shown below, Mars opposes both Uranus and Eris along the MC–IC axis. The lunar nodes move into Libra and Aries in March, echoing the Venus–Mars tensions and issues of give and take.

Descendant. There is a danger of America projecting its own shadow qualities and collectively seeing a dark threat “out there.” There could also be a focus on the cost of maintain-ing a large prison population — and more awareness of the industrial–prison complex. Jupiter is a symbol of courts (judges) and religions (cler-ics, gurus), as well as the higher mind (teachers) and legisla-tion. There is tremendous pressure for reform in these areas, or possibly big changes in leadership there, as Jupiter forms a tight t-square with Uranus and Pluto. The equinox Moon, which is the Ascendant ruler of the D.C. equinox chart, is applying to a conjunction with Saturn in Scorpio in the 5th house, so the public will support spend-ing on the nation’s infrastructure. Mars retrograde is in the 4th house conjunct Vesta and the North Node (an agitated pop-ulation, border integrity issues, hot and dry weather, and a focus on militias/guns/domestic terrorism).

The Cardinal Cross of April With the Sun at 19° Aries exactly opposing Mars in Libra on April 8, pay special attention to what leaders of countries, movements, companies, or religions are doing. This offers a clue to where the flashpoints will be later in April when the grand cross tightens. Meanwhile, Venus, Neptune, and Chiron form a loose conjunction in Pisces, now through mid month, supporting escapism through fantasy or pleasure- seeking, more openness to others, and healing wounds in relationships, especially through bodywork, art, and music. Just a few hours after Pluto turns retrograde, the April 15 total lunar eclipse at 25° Libra (see Chart 5) will last nearly an hour — with the Moon turning dark red — and it will be visible from anywhere in North and South America that has clear skies. At the time of maximum eclipse, the Moon will be directly on the MC in the San Diego–Los Angeles area and

Jupiter will move into tighter alignment with the Uranus–Pluto square. For Washington, D.C. all points due north, whereas the Washington, D.C. chart for the eclipse has the emphasis on the 2nd (Sun, Mercury, Ura-nus, Eris, Juno) and 8th (Moon, Ceres, Vesta, Mars) houses, so there may be unusual economic news or events affecting farmers, the food supply, law enforcement, and caregivers. Note that Mercury (communication, news, travel) joins the grand cross at this time, and with the Full Moon eclipse add-ing energy to the cardinal signs, it may well be that the April 13–18 period is the most intense or eventful time of the year — and not just for the U.S. Then, in April 20–23, the grand cross becomes more exact, and like a large wildfire that creates its own weather, this combination of planets may create its own weird real-ity for at least a few days. Besides news and weather events, I would expect to see extreme behavior from people that will show up on many levels: strange driving, intense emotional releases, quitting jobs or getting fired, relationships ending and beginning, very busy ERs and police/fire stations, agitated public figures, and agitated or overwhelmed people/animals in general. Tuesday the 22nd is the most exact alignment (see Chart 6, facing page) — and Tuesdays are ruled by Mars, by the way. Mars is the “trigger” planet, and it is retrograde, so the people who initiate conflict or assert themselves too strongly may pay a steep price. Pay attention to intuitive impressions, especially those that may be cautioning restraint, and be skillful in the tim-ing of your speech and actions. Be sure to check up on loved ones who may be struggling during these times. Mercury in Aries is moving near its maximum speed now, more than 2° per day, so the hours may seem to race by. Mercury is con-junct Juno and the South Node on April 21–22, bringing con-tractual agreements/issues (and relationships) into sharp focus, particularly those agreements made in February during the last Mercury retrograde.

Chart 7: Grand TrineMay 15, 2014

Starting at the turn of the year, and building toward a peak in April, there are four planets (forces) — in interlocking squares and oppositions — competing with and stimulating one another. Because slower-moving outer planets are involved, this configuration reflects longstanding problems that are very difficult to resolve. Interpreting each aspect separately, we can get a feel for the energies involved. The dates when each aspect is exact are also listed.

• Uranus square Pluto: evolutionary breakthroughs (significant reform or revolution); freedom vs. control; powerful technologies; extreme situations or sudden changes in power➣November 1, 2013; April 21, 2014; December 14, 2014

• Jupiter opposite Pluto: secret use of power; a drive for major achievements; important legal decisions; good strategic perspective; deep polarization; operating outside of the law➣January 31, 2014; April 20, 2014

• Mars square Pluto: instinctual action; physical endurance; ambition; courage➣December 30, 2013; April 23, 2014; June 14, 2014

• Jupiter square Uranus: invention from necessity; unrestrained freedom; innovation; law vs. lawlessness➣February 26, 2014; April 20, 2014

• Mars opposite Uranus: rebellious action; throwing fuel on the fire; accidents; independent action➣December 25, 2013; April 23, 2014; June 25, 2014

• Mars square Jupiter: action forcing growth, or growth forcing action; physical strength; risktaking➣January 8, 2014; April 22, 2014; August 1, 2014

What positive expressions may look like: break-throughs with personal or collective “stuck” patterns of behavior; wise risktaking in areas previously controlled by one’s fears; proactively challenging “opponents” for the sake of justice or positive change; willingness to try new things and make mistakes, and the ability to be decisive when faced with unfamiliar obstacles or when overwhelmed

What negative expressions may look like: unhelp-ful reactions to challenges, due to fear of change or loss; physical or legal aggression; turning away from new opportunities due to wanting control; overwhelmed people or institutions; impulsive/reckless behavior or spending; projection of shadow material onto others (collectively, going to war); escapism through addictive or obsessive behaviors

Finally, a solar eclipse at 8°52' Taurus on April 29 ushers in one more wave of intensity, but also brings new beginnings into play over the next 6–12 months. Look to how this eclipse degree interacts with your natal planets, and which house it falls in, to get a sense of what new energies are available.

More predictions for mid-to-late April: Extreme weather and unusual tornado events; spontaneous or unusual behav-ior, for better or worse; increase in crimes of passion; relation-ships under unusually strong stress; military action; weapons malfunctions; the unexpected death of prominent persons, possibly judges or business/civic leaders in the U.S.; athletic achievements, but also injuries to muscles (Mars); volatile financial markets, with gold spiking higher, possibly due to a crisis in the world. A show of police/military force to counter large public demonstrations.

Where in the World? A brief look at the astrolocality maps for the December 20 – April 15 time period shows repeated activity in the Mid-dle East, with emphasis on Saudi Arabia, Yemen, Iraq, and Somalia. For instance, the April 8 Sun–Mars opposition has Mars on the MC in these countries, while the March 20 equi-nox map (see Map below) shows Mars rising in that region. Japan has Pluto rising and Jupiter setting, while Cairo is under Jupiter, Pluto, and Uranus lines.

When Will Things Calm Down? May will be a relatively calmer month, with a chance to regroup. There will be carryover from the difficulties of April, but by mid May, a productive grand trine of Jupiter, Saturn, and Chiron in the water signs begins to bring an overall sense of stability, balance, and much more cooperation, especially

after Mars opposes Venus on May 11 and Venus conjoins Uranus on May 15 (see Chart 7, p. 29). The exact Jupiter–Saturn trine is on May 24, but the aspect lasts well into June. It might also be wise to finalize any important purchases, contracts, or travel details in May, because the big story for June is Mercury turning retrograde at 3° Cancer on June 7. Mercury then backs into Gemini before turning direct again on July 1. This will be the most problematic Mercury retrograde of the year, because it is 24 days long and slower-moving. There are also more speed bumps in June, as Mars returns for its third and final encounter with Pluto (June 14) and Uranus (June 25). The most interesting event in July is the Full Moon (SuperMoon) of July 12 (chart not shown). The Sun at 20° Cancer and the Moon–Pluto in Capricorn form a temporary grand cross with Uranus in Aries and Mars, Ceres, Vesta, and the North Node at 23°–24° Libra. This may echo or further develop the events of January and April 2014. By the end of July, however, Jupiter will leave Cancer and Mars will move into Scorpio. I’m sure that, by then, we’ll be ready for some-thing new!

12-Sign Forecast through July 2014

ARIES Sun or rising sign: Your ruling planet, Mars, spends this entire period in your opposite sign, Libra. You encounter situations

that call for you to extend yourself and give your attention to the important people in your life in a new way. Because you can-not easily continue your usual patterns and habits, for various reasons (or because of new limits on your activities), you have the chance to become aware of unconscious actions and tendencies. Partners, lovers, or close friends play an instrumental part — in fact, you may feel that they are driving events in your life at this time, especially when Mars is retrograde (see Diagram on p. 24). If you are embroiled in any legal challenges or other type of conflict, be care-ful not to prematurely launch your arsenal or project your own shadow qualities onto your partner or opponent. Mars is directly aligning with three powerful planets on and off throughout this period, so this will be an eventful time. You’ll need all the integ-rity and support you can muster. Where is support? In your solar 4th house, thanks to Jupiter. This house rules your house, those whom you consider fam-ily, and matters involving your land or any real estate. Jupiter here brings an expanded, more buoyant emotional life and a sense of belonging to your community. Possibly a larger living space, too. Especially in January, your Uranus-square-Pluto issues may feel like a roller coaster in your professional life (or with your public image), as the demands of your career/vocation challenge you to achieve new levels of creativity. Although there will be flashes of brilliance and innovation, you can’t expect to call all the shots or always do it your way. There may be a reversal of some kind in very early March. So, be ready for cooperation and compromise — and helpful feedback — especially in mid April, when you can also be of great service to a partner or friend in crisis. The second half of April is likely to be a volatile period

(and it’s not just you), so minimize stress and use restraint. A new source of income is possible, starting in early May, and you are planting the seeds for long-term success. Saturn in Scorpio may deny or delay financial sup-port from others through 2014; pay care-ful attention to taxes, credit issues, and financial/business agreements. Mars turns direct again in late May, giving a general feeling of things moving forward, and by July you’ll have more fun and more reason for optimism.

TAURUS Sun or rising sign: Your ruling planet, Venus, is in Capricorn from No-vember 5 until early March 2014. It will be retrograde in

that sign from December 21 until the end of January. Meanwhile, Jupiter bestows its grace in your solar 3rd house until July. Besides improving your transportation, this speaks of opportunities to expand your knowledge via higher education, travel, or information from people or cultures you are not usually exposed to. With Venus retro-grade, this new information may reshape your overall view of life or make you ques-tion any dogma (religious or political) that you’ve subscribed to. Mars will be spending what seems like forever in your solar 6th house, bringing stress and significant changes to your work-place through June; the changes (or at least dramatic flare-ups) come in stages, starting in January. On the health front, pay atten-tion to what foods or environmental factors might cause inflammation (Mars is often connected with acute symptoms, fevers, and inflammation) and what can remedy that. At the beginning and very end of Feb-ruary, and again during mid-to-late April, monitor your stress levels and remember that not all the problems you are witness-ing are your problems. March is your best month for career advancement or public attention; April is better for financial rewards and pleasant

social contacts. A new image, or a new way of coming forward, is on the Taurus menu for May. But consider going on a retreat or taking time off in May — you’ll feel like conserving your energy then. Throughout 2014, you might not be receiving as much support from partners or close friends as you are accustomed to, and someone’s erratic or stunningly selfish behavior could be undermining your sense of peace/stability. There may be intense control issues involving an elder or teacher figure in your life. There is an opportunity to make a breakthrough in thinking (and intuiting) for yourself, deepening your val-ues or beliefs about life, and expanding your freedoms.

GEMINI Sun or rising sign: The year 2014 starts with some energy for improv-ing your finances. There is a window in January and

early February for reducing your debt, re-financing something, sorting out tax issues, or making investments. Since your ruling planet, Mercury, turns retrograde on Feb-ruary 6, try to finalize your transactions be-fore then. Early-to-mid February may be a confusing period, especially with events involving career, authority figures, or a parent. Be sure to get any career compen-sation promises in writing. However, this may also be a very cre-ative time for you. You have lots of energy moving toward self-expression, with Mars camping out in your solar 5th house from December to July. You’ll be more assertive in love relationships, and there will be times of excitement and unpredictability, but not necessarily a feeling of stability around people in your life. If you have kids, pay extra attention to them and who they are spending time with, as they connect with the archetype of the Warrior (or martial art-ist). The lunar eclipse period around April 15 is an especially exciting/volatile time, with a focus on giving and receiving love. Support your nervous system as necessary

through mid-to-late April, and throughout 2014 avoid cold, damp, or gloomy environ-ments (hello, Saturn!) for optimum health. Your job may demand extra time or effort until May, when conditions improve or co-workers are more cooperative. The money situation looks better in May and early June as well. In June, though, keep your checkbook balanced and avoid major purchases. There are new energies coming in May for an inner awakening of some type or a new approach to spirituality. You may also connect with some really exotic or brilliant new friends this year. But don’t be surprised to find important changes in your social circle in 2014 or upheavals in some of the groups or organizations you frequent.

CANCER Sun or rising sign: Expansive and buoyant Jupi-ter continues to camp out in your sign through mid July 2014. In general, this is a

time of opportunity, especially for self- expression and improved health/vitality. Those of you born between June 29 and July 8, however, will also face challenging exact aspects to your Sun; these can create uncomfortable situations involving power struggles or changes in career and income. Through July, Mars in Libra turns up the heat in your solar 4th house — the realm of home and family. There may be stress-ful circumstances, or the need for increased physical activity, connected to your parents, family members, or your actual house or land (especially in early March and mid-to-late April). Any remodeling projects (or feng shui) that you initiate in 2014 may re-flect inner changes you are going through but haven’t fully realized yet. Be aware of how anger operates in your relationships. January is largely driven by the needs or agenda of a partner or close friend who

may need your support, with emotions peaking in mid January. Travel plans may change in early February. The month of February may refocus you on business/financial matters, and women who are (or seem to be) in power-ful positions will have a strong influence; a partnership is possible, but avoid or delay committing to this if it doesn’t feel right. March is the best month for travel or educational opportunities, but give your vehicle a checkup by mid month. In mid April, you may feel that you’re doing noth-ing but putting out fires at home and at work, so it is important to stay centered amidst a chaotic environment. Surprising information could be revealed about an authority figure. By early May, your social life gets a boost, and your strategy for the future becomes clearer. May is a good month for you, and any problems or delays you’ve experienced with investments, children, or creative proj-ects are lessened in May. Try to get more rest or give attention to your dreams and in-ner processes in June. Mid July’s Full Moon echoes themes from earlier in the year, so be alert!

LEO Sun or rising sign: This is a time for adventure and both inner and outer explo-ration. Monitor your physi-cal energy levels carefully,

so you don’t overextend yourself. Mars in Libra stimulates your nervous system — maybe too much at times — during the first half of 2014. Situations with siblings/relatives or neighbors can be problematic. Pluto in your solar 6th house brings transformational energy to your workplace and also to your diet and exercise patterns, which are up for review in January. So, this is a great time to launch a new health- related discipline. Keep your environment warm and well lit for optimal health. In January, travel or the pursuit of special-ized knowledge can play a major role in

your life, although balancing work and fun continues to be a big challenge in 2014. Contact with foreign cultures/countries is stimulating, but be sure to investigate all risks and hidden costs before embarking. The responsibilities you have at home — to family, house, and land — will continue to be a big part of the picture this year. At the end of January into February, if workplace relationships get complicated, try to avoid becoming embroiled in any dis-putes. That episode is temporary. Energy abounds throughout February and March for inner development, dreamwork, spiri-tual studies, or other mind-expanding pur-suits that can change your life. Teachers, therapists, or other professionals can help you sort out problems, or they may mirror back something important to you. You’ll be more sensitive (even to drugs or alcohol) February 21–26. And don’t do your taxes or launch new business projects in Febru-ary; wait until the first of March or later. March is very good for creativity and for deepening your connections with a part-ner or a close friend. Watch spending and checkbook balances mid month. If you’ve been dragging, your energy level will perk up in April, but be on the alert for a direct challenge to you on April 7–9. By mid April, the focus is on learning new skills and/or problems with siblings/relatives/neighbors. You’ll likely have a case of travel fever or at least ditch your routine in some way. Calming herbs are helpful in April. A new career opportunity opens up in May for many Leos, or there is a chance to “shine” for the public. Any emotional hard-ships or problems in your domestic situa-tion will ease a bit in May as well. Jupiter is due to enter your sign (for one year) in mid July, so things are looking up!

VIRGO Sun or rising sign: The good news is that your health is not under any special astrological stress for most of this year. Ditto

for job/workplace issues. And your inner or spiritual life also blooms in 2014. The challenges tend to be more in the finan-cial realm: income, business, taxes, invest-ments, and money management. It may be necessary to spend more than you planned (especially in March and April), perhaps because of an opportunity for acquisition, so consider being conservative with funds during the holidays. December and January have you fo-cusing on a love interest (from the past?) or projects/situations involving children and/or younger people. You’ll enjoy risk-taking now and will feel more natural sponta-neously asserting your own values — and what you learn about your communication skills may be eye-opening. February is a bit less eventful but will still be socially active. Don’t sign contracts or commit to partner-ships during February, if you can help it. Responsibilities with siblings and relatives, or limited transportation options, will also be a theme throughout early 2014. Mid March is especially full and busy, and it may be emotionally charged as well. Through April, any financial invest-ments may take a boom-or-bust course or have wild swings up and down. It is per-

haps best to focus on money coming di-rectly from your career efforts; you may be surprised by a raise or promotion. For some Virgos, advancement in a group you’ve been involved with can lead to a new set of challenges. From April 6–19, watch for theft/loss of valuables or being overcharged by people or institutions (like the IRS!). Bal-ance your checkbook. Conflicts over who owns what could get ugly. There will be tremendous clarity in mid-to-late April, though, regarding relationships and other people’s motives. In May, expanding your experience through travel or study begins to sound appealing. You may have an opportunity for enjoyable travel (in a group?) before the end of June.

LIBRA Sun or rising sign: Libra, meet Mars. Mars, this is Libra. You’ll be room-mates for eight months, start-ing in December. Actually,

Mars in your sign is a very balancing in-fluence, bringing energy for more physical activity and decisiveness to your airy sign, although it probably won’t be a smooth and comfortable time period. Most Librans like

a good fight, but on the level of ideas, ver-bal sparring, and “can we agree on what’s fair?” By April, when Pluto, Uranus, and Jupiter get involved with Mars, all making hard aspects to your sign, it will get more visceral and could threaten your equilib-rium. Especially if your birthday is October 1–8, or if you have personal planets/angles at 9°–16° of cardinal signs, your sense of identity, some of your relationships, and your concept of justice could get scrambled and reassembled into a messy omelet you don’t recognize as “your life.” But you’ll have more success with your career and be treated well by your employer or other authority figures all the way through July. January starts with something being reorganized or beautified at home, al-though it may feel like it’s taking forever. You are asserting yourself to make things happen and may be ruffling some feathers. You want quality, but resources may be limited or delayed. A parental or career- related kerfuffle arises mid month. By early February there could be a significant re-versal at home or with family, and your focus may begin to shift to self-expression and creative projects, which move forward more easily. An emotional heaviness may

Page 11: Nuclear Danger Diagram - The Mountain Astrologer · ary through July 2014, followed by a 12-sign forecast for each Sun and rising sign. The charts shown here are all cast for the

34 www.mountainastrologer.com

also be present but will lighten by mid February. You’ll have plenty of physical energy in March, but if health is a concern, this is a good month to start new dietary habits to reduce inflammation or balance your me-tabolism in other ways. After March 5, for a month, you’ll be able to have some fun or even romantic encounters mixed in with all the “opportunities for growth” that life is dishing out. Things will also improve with kids and investments around this time. April may feel more like a roller-coaster ride, and relationship issues (or challenges from others) are front and center. Key dates are April 8 and April 14–16 (lunar eclipse in your sign, emotionally powerful). As April ends, get help as needed to process recent experiences; take care of yourself. Mid May is also eventful; try to embrace what is newly emerging rather than clinging to the outworn. Your career efforts could pay off (or you gain financial support) in May as well.

SCORPIO Sun or rising sign: Saturn is in your sign through 2014, as it was in 2013. Especially for younger Scorpios (under 40), this

continues the theme of “tests” — obstacles arising throughout the year that can be over-come through effort and persistence. For Scorpio rising and older Scorpios, aware-ness of important limits is heightened (es-pecially limits on the energy/resources available to you); short-cuts won’t work. Mars in Libra is in your solar 12th house through July, so consider develop-ing and nourishing new habits that allow for rest, meditation, inner explorations, and nonverbal creative expression. Don’t be surprised if you feel more vulnerable than normal; it doesn’t necessarily mean that some hidden foe is working against you, but your usual ego defenses may not be operating now. The January 1 New Moon ushers in a month of increased mental clarity (good for research projects) and increased curiosity, so learning new skills or writing that blog or book you’ve been thinking about might feel right. Travel in January may be intense, but it can be transformative; drive carefully, though. January and February may also see situations with siblings or neighbors that

need careful handling. Watch for manipu-lative communication. By early March, you could feel that a retreat or a vacation is absolutely neces-sary; do your best to carve out some time. This can also be a more fun month, with opportunities to expand into new territory, whether through travel, art, or spirituality. Health practices and your work life are up and down, so you’ll need to ride the waves as they come. Most of April ener-gizes your solar 6th and 12th houses, so be careful with anything you put into your body, especially stimulants. Use restraint at the workplace — which may resemble a zoo at this time — and write down vivid dreams or unusual visions or intuitions around mid April. From late April into May, something new could start up in the realm of partner-ship — or a new person in your life arouses some interest. Projects that have been on hold begin to move forward again after May 20, and even though you may still have to work hard to advance your goals, things flow easier in May and June, for the most part.

SAGITTARIUS Sun or rising sign: Venus and Jupiter are creating a climate for in-creased financial or material support from November 6

through early March. Business will grow. By mid December, you have more en-ergy for involvement in groups and or-ganizations; social or political activism is a strong potential for you into July. Your goals and values — your sense of what is important — may significantly change or become more clear in the first four months of 2014. If you’re looking for more excite-ment in your love life or in your creative work, 2014 won’t disappoint. January’s theme is transforming or re-building your sources of income or fund-ing. Look for opportunities, and don’t rule out family or community sources. Watch for anger or aggression in your social circle or among group members (possibly over money); separations there are possible. By the end of January, attention shifts to learn-ing new skills, making repairs to your home (water-related) or your car, and deciding on a major purchase/expense, which should ideally be finalized by February 5. You may have to rely on others for assistance. In mid February, things flow better overall, and the focus is on a teacher or teaching.

Avoid cold, damp, or institutional environ-ments, and feed yourself positive messages for optimum health in 2014. The first three weeks in March, your attention is drawn toward the personal, emotional, and intimate, yet much of your energy is spent in outward-directed proj-ects and thoughts of a better future. Late March into April, examine the giving–receiving balance in your relationships, and reassess your effectiveness in light of your goals and ideals. A major distraction from your goals is likely to arise in mid April. For those of you with children or contact with young people, give special care and attention to them in April. Also, take care not to spill the beans or cause an upheaval with friends or in delicate situations from April 14–18. Your creativ-ity is at super-maximum levels at this time as well! Minimize risk-taking, and protect what you value from April 14–30. In May, things improve regarding weighty responsibilities or feelings of dread that you may have suffered earlier in 2014. A new job is possible now. May 15–18 is best for fun, love, and adventure. Late May into June, you may require something re-financed or your financial/business records sorted out, so best not to launch new proj-ects in June.

CAPRICORN Sun or rising sign: Those of you born from December 30 to January 4 (or who have 9°–14° Capri-corn rising) are getting a visit

from transiting Pluto in the months ahead, so be alert and ready to let go of precon-ceptions or outworn forms (or identities) in your life. Rebirth awaits. There will be several challenges for most Capricorns in 2014, but many of you will also be blessed by support from near and dear friends or partners who provide comfort. One theme is authority figures (or par-ents) who are angry or acting out, even un-stable or aggressive, at work or in the home. This may come up as early as January 1, and it repeats or intensifies by mid April. On the positive side, you’ll have plenty of energy going into your work in the world, so advancement or reward for past service is possible in 2014. Venus, the planet of plea-sure, desire, and attraction, is in your sign from November 5 until March 5; this pe-riod may include an appearance by some-one from your past, as Venus retrogrades from December 21 through January. And

your appearance, your self-presentation, or even your name may change. In January, you may be stressed by un-expected changes — or at the extreme, arro-gant/unstable behaviors — possibly involv-ing home or family, but generally disruptive to your routine. See this as a wake-up call. Your career may also be very demanding or involve pressure from authorities. Get your car serviced before the end of January. Also, you can more easily find the right professional to help you with prob-lems at the end of January. By mid Febru-ary, your attention is on another person’s money or resources — or an important business deal. Avoid signing contracts or leases until March, if possible. In early March, there could be a rever-sal in career-related matters, so be ready for anything. Things flow better for you mid month, especially your social life. You may want to take the chance to learn some new skills or upgrade your transportation. April will be particularly dynamic and challenging. The tension between inner, more personal needs and outer, worldly demands will be hard to miss, especially in the days around April 8 and 15. The week of April 14 might put you in front of the public or affect your public image in some way. Restlessness — or a more exciting/chaotic domestic life — may be part of the picture in mid-to-late April as well. New information about relatives may surface. May and June are a bit easier to take, and you might have new young people en-ter your life or feel that you can take more creative risks or make solid investments (finalize these by June 7).

AQUARIUS Sun or rising sign: The theme of the 2014 grand cross, from the Aquar-ian perspective, is bringing what has been hidden out

into the open. You may also be more sensi-tive than ever to collective energies — and learn how they can influence your health and well-being. From December through June, you’ll have a strong urge to travel or otherwise expand your mind through contact with the unfamiliar — especially in April, when you could feel restless or agitated and very allergic to routines. You’ll be drawn to new technologies to learn, do research, or advance your ca-reer. Things will generally go very well at the workplace. You’ll have more work than

you can handle — although getting credit for it (and public recognition) may be dif-ficult. At the January 1 New Moon, look for a powerful message about your life purpose in dreams, symbols, or omens. Something deep wants to emerge from within. By mid January, you may find yourself very busy at work or focused on improving your health or diet. More physical vitality manifests after January 18. Many Aquarians will be working out sticky relationship issues that feel very karmic throughout January. By the end of the month, more clarity can be gained about this. In early February, pay attention to de-tails regarding money, bank balances, and the things you own. Consider obtaining tools for musical or artistic expression. If traveling in February or early March, keep your itinerary open and flexible. Watch for situations around loans, taxes, shared funds, or with your business by mid March. April will likely be harsh on your ner-vous system, so try to exercise and eat well. Around the April 15 lunar eclipse, you’ll be stimulated by creative ideas and more than ready to see new places, but drive care-fully and be thoughtful in situations with siblings, neighbors, or relatives. A teacher or spiritual guide plays an important role at this time. Through late April into May, the energy remains high, and you’ll need to sort out what is yours and what is from the collective. A new project at home is possible start-ing in May, or maybe even buying a new house. Your career benefits from opportu-nities at the workplace in mid May, and things calm down a bit. In June, be sure to verify and double-check important infor-mation related to your work or health.

PISCES Sun or rising sign: Thinking of starting or ex-panding a business? Want to drum up financial support or get a loan? You’ll have

plenty of initiative to move forward on that starting December 7 and lasting well into July 2014, thanks to Mars in Libra. However, you may also have to deal with circumstances or stressful events involv-ing debt, credit, taxes, banks, etc. You do have support, maybe potential investors; just be sure that everything is in writing and nobody is exaggerating their actual capabilities.

For Pisces people born February 21–26, Neptune will be transiting over your Sun in 2014, which is very good for cre-ativity and imagination but tends not to be very organized or practical. January sees a shifting social circle, resolving issues from the past and making new friends. You are seeking more mean-ingful connections. Goals are re-evaluated, and you find powerful social causes that appeal to you. Enjoyment or expansion comes through children or younger peo-ple. There may also be impulsive spending events (watch for gambling excesses), re-versals in income, or unusual, unexpected expenses from January through April. Travel in 2014 will tend to be business- related. But a retreat of some kind may feel just right in February, although more energy will come after the 18th. Mid Feb-ruary is a good time to watch health prac-tices and diet carefully; don’t overwork. In early March, something important changes in the realm of finance/business, or some-thing needs to be revisited in that arena. The urge to connect deeply with others becomes stronger now. April is an intense month, and for many Pisceans, financial challenges are part of the mix. Or at least a lot of activity involving money, business, and/or finan-cial institutions. The lunar eclipse of mid April is perhaps the peak of all this. Alter-natively, it can light up previously hidden psychological patterns for you, or challenge your ability to connect deeply with others. Watch for the urge to escape problems via compulsive spending throughout April. May brings opportunities to learn new skills, to connect with siblings/relatives, and to improve personal transportation. Jupiter and Saturn both make trines to your sign, so May and June are good months to move your goals forward and to find support — or even new love in your life.
