You will need to adapt your CV for every application
Employers expect your CV to be targeted towards the job you are applying for
Make sure you include evidence proving that you meet the employer’s requirements
Recruiters spend on average 5-7 seconds looking at a CV- first impressions count!

PRESENTATION: MAKING A GOOD FIRST IMPRESSION
Design:
Clear headings for each section
Appropriate font (no smaller than size 10, sans serif font)
Use consistent formatting e.g. spacing, borders, fonts, headings, bold, italics
Distribute text evenly using the full page
Use bullet points or short paragraphs to break up block text
Appropriate length (2 sides of A4) – do not go over two pages
Do not put ‘Curriculum Vitae’ at the top - your name should be the title
Structure:
Order the sections by prioritising the information that the employer will be most interested in
The first page should contain the most important information for the role
Typically: Personal details, Personal Profile (optional), Education, Work Experience, Skills
(optional), Interests and Achievements, References
Language:
Spelling and grammar must be correct – proofread your CV carefully and read it out loud
Avoid starting sentences with ‘I’
You can use 3rd person but don’t use your name, (‘A business student with retail experience’)
Use action words at the start of bullet points, (e.g. ‘managed/coordinated/liaised’)
Write in short and snappy sentences
Be consistent with your use of tense – it is generally much easier to write in the past tense
CONTENT: INFORMING THE READER
Personal Details:
Name, address, telephone number, email
Ensure that you have a professional-sounding email address

Who you are
What you have to offer, e.g. experience/skills/knowledge/personal qualities
Your career aim / what you are looking for
Avoid generic statements– do not write ‘a hardworking individual’, ‘can work well
independently or as part of a team’ – everyone writes this!
You could choose the top three achievements from your CV to help you
Student Membership of Professional Bodies (e.g. ICE/ IStructE/ CIOB/ RICS Student Member) Full UK Driving Licence (Clean)- (if no licence, provide test date)
Profile (optional) MUST be relevant to the role or don’t include it! In 3-4 sentences, give a BRIEF summary of: 1-

Key Skills
Teamwork: Working in a small team at Nottingham Trent Student’s Union to help run the student union store, taking on a variety of roles. In college, I achieved the Student Voice award – as I was providing students opportunities to work with staff in the form of events and experiences. Worked with members of staff and fellow students to create an art experience day and my work experience has developed my strong level of team-working skills. Communication: I have high levels of communication skills, both written and verbal. During my time at university, I created reports and essays throughout my educational experience. My retail experience has helped to develop my communication skills and I have been able to learn skills such as communicating directly with customers and current employees. Throughout my studies I have made great use of communication through IT using packages such as Microsoft Office, Final Cut and Adobe products. Initiative and Adaptability My volunteering opportunities and involvement with my course at university evidence this. I am a course rep and member of the school forum, which ensures the voice of fellow students is heard. Before university, I decided to complete the Prince’s Trust award. Both roles required me to show high levels of initiative, dedication and discipline.
Achievements:
NTU Acceler8 Employability Award I completed this to enhance my employability prospects after graduating. Student Voice Award In 2011, I was awarded the Student Voice Award for my time at college due to my commitment with the student TV station and events. Publication of photographs Published in a variety of publications; books, magazines and album covers.
Interests
I enjoy running, photography and music

Organising your CV
The most important message is that there is no ideal format or layout of a CV; these are simply guidelines to lead you. It is very unlikely you’ll just have one, employers expect your CV to be targeted to the job role and industry you are applying for. Your CV should be no more than two pages and should have a clear layout that is easy to navigate. An employer may spend less than 30 seconds glancing at your CV to get a measure of who you are and if you fit their criteria so use your space wisely.
What came first? The chicken or the egg? There is always debate over the order that Education and Employment appear, this will depend on the employer. The job advert should lead you, if they specify a qualification lead with Education, but if they are asking for experience lead with Employment.
Personal Details
Name, address, telephone number, email and LinkedIn. Ensure your email address is professional [email protected] need not apply; you may think it’s quirky but an employer may not.
Do not include date of birth, nationality, marital status, national insurance number or passport number
Do not include a photograph, unless requested or it is an industry norm to do so
Personal Profile
Grab the reader’s attention and be brief (3-6 lines) – remember to have a good start to the profile
A profile should cover (1) who you are, (2) what you can bring to an organisation in terms of experience, skills, personal qualities, and (3) your career aims in terms of type of work or sector sought
It is good practice to use the third person without ‘he/she’ e.g. ‘BSc (Hons) Zoo Biology undergraduate’. Be consistent throughout.
An alternative is to write in the first person (‘I’), but don’t overuse ‘I’. Remember to be consistent throughout, it’s one or the other not both. Do not write in the second person (‘you’)
Use positive, dynamic language; avoid passive language and negative statements
Final year Wildlife Conservation undergraduate with experience of working in natural environments. Special interest in bird migration. Currently looking for graduate opportunities within conservation and research.
BSc Equine Sports Science graduate seeking a career in the field of equine nutrition and welfare.
An enthusiastic and motivated Physical Geography graduate with fieldwork experience in UK, Spain and Iceland. Practical experience of using Geographical Information Systems, data collection and report writing. Seeking a career in planning and development.
Employment and Work History
Generally, list work history in reverse chronological order i.e. most recent job first
You could include all you experience paid or voluntary under the one heading or break it down into Employment and Voluntary or even Relevant Experience (paid and voluntary) and General
Give the name of the employer, job title, dates worked there
Include information about duties/skills, focusing on those relevant to the job role being applied for
Note that by avoiding "I" and "me" forces a person to make each point start with a positive action word
Include relevant part-time work, temporary work and unpaid voluntary work experience
Do not include salary details or reasons for leaving previous jobs
List relevant qualifications in reverse chronological order i.e. most recent qualifications first
List the course title, provider/institution, dates to and from, and grades (if recently obtained)
Include modules, projects or practical assignments relevant to the job role
Avoid volunteering negative information e.g. courses started but not finished or listing failed exams
List all relevant work-based training (e.g. NVQs, animal handling, health & safety, first aid)
List any relevant professional memberships (e.g. member of Chartered Institute of Marketing)
Skills and Achievements
Relate the skills to the job description/specification or what you think the employer is looking for
Be mindful that many recruitment agencies and some websites place CVs into a database which work by searching key words and then selecting appropriate candidates
Order the skills in importance to the job role; keep to around 5 to 6 points
If using the functional CV style, use headings to group skills relevant to the job role
Link key skills and abilities with real-life achievements, such as awards, promotions, work successes, statistics
Remember skills and achievements can be gained from work, voluntary experience, leisure and whilst in education
Additional Information and Interests
This can be one section or two depending on how much you have to say, lots- keep separate, not a lot- keep information together
Additional Information- Include any other relevant skills e.g. driving licence, languages, IT skills or knowledge of IT packages
Most people like reading, listening to music, keeping fit and socialising with friends, so unless you have done something special – or relevant to the job being applied for – leave it out!
Also consider – will a hobby be seen as interfering with your work? Are there any conflicts of interest? If you enjoy jumping out of aeroplanes on the weekend will the employer be nervous about your turning up in one piece Monday morning? Always ask the question, is it relevant? What are the transferable skills?
Some interests like being in a society, member of sport/recreation club, charity and voluntary work might demonstrate relevant and transferable skills that an employer is looking for
References
Either write ‘References available on request’ or include details of two referees (name, job title, company, address and telephone number)
You must check with referees before using their details
Who could you use? Employers current and prior, academics, voluntary organisations, groups/committee’s or character references
