Anna and Pekka Jokinen are going out for dinner this evening with their friends Mari Juvonen and Steve Hanson, who are also a Finnish-American couple. They all met for the first time at an event of the International Club several years ago, and they get together for dinner now and then. They are going to a nice restaurant tonight to celebrate Mari’s birthday. They meet outside the restaurant, and then they quickly go inside because Mari and Steve arrive a few minutes late. The host greets them.
Host: Hyvää iltaa. Ah, you’re all speaking English. Good evening. Steve: Good evening. Host: Party of four? Do you have a reservation? Mari: Yes, under the name of Mari Juvonen. Host: Right this way, please. There’s a beautiful view of the city from your table… Mari: By the way, could we please get two menus in English? Host: The menus are in Finnish and English. Mari: Great! Anna: Happy Birthday, Mari! Pekka: Happy Birthday! Mari: Thanks! Sorry we were late! Did you get our text? Pekka: Yes, we did. “Moose trouble, so we’ll be there in forty-five minutes, at 7:05 p.m.” Anna: What happened? Steve: A herd of moose decided to cross the road in front of us. Then two of

them stopped on the road for five minutes. That’s why we’re five minutes late. The same thing happened to us the day before yesterday! Mari: I also saw a herd in a field yesterday evening, at twilight. That’s the worst time of the day for moose-car accidents. Steve: It is. That’s what it’s like in the countryside at this time of the year. Say, let’s take a look at the menus. The server arrives soon afterwards. Server: Are you ready to order, or do you need a little more time? Pekka: We’re ready to order. The server takes their orders. Server: I’ll bring your drinks and meals shortly. Steve: So, what are you up to this weekend, Anna and Pekka? Pekka: Well, we’re going to our granddaughter Ulla’s soccer game tomorrow. Anna: On Sunday, we’re just going to take it easy. Last weekend we were super busy. Pekka: What are you two up to this weekend? Mari: Well, we’re having this birthday dinner tonight with you, and then the day after tomorrow we have tickets to the theatre. It’s my birthday present from Steve. Anna: How nice! Oh, here comes our food. Server: Can I get anything else for you? Anna: I think we’re fine. Server: Enjoy your meals! Anna: Hmmm, my steak is slightly undercooked. I’ll try to get the waiter’s attention. Excuse me!

Food substitutions, deletions, and additions in North America and the United Kingdom
Food substitutions, deletions, and additions are not always possible in
every restaurant. In general, North Americans expect that they can make
substitutions, deletions, and additions in most restaurants in North America
(even in cheap, fast-food restaurants). The idea there behind customer
service is “The customer is always right,” so that is why customers in
restaurants can be particular. In the U.K., however, most people who live
there do not automatically assume that they can make any sort of changes
to the menu. People in the U.K. are less likely to ask for any changes to their
food. However, in both North America and the U.K., you can always ask
about ingredients that you are allergic to or that you have an intolerance to
(e.g. gluten or lactose).

It’s such a nice day!
Pekka and Anna’s granddaughter Ulla has a soccer game at 11:30 a.m. on Saturday, so after their late evening, Pekka and Anna sleep in a bit. The alarm clock goes off at 9:30 a.m.
Anna: Ugh, I didn’t get enough sleep. I was so full from dinner last night, plus I had indigestion in the middle of the night. Now I have such a bad headache. Pekka: I’ll bring you a glass of water… Here you go. Let’s see what the weather’s like today.
He goes to the window and opens the curtain.
Pekka: Hey, the sun is shining! The weather forecast was so wrong. This is great weather for Ulla’s soccer game. Anna: Ack, it’s too bright! Pekka: Come on, get up! It’s such a nice day! Let’s have breakfast and get going.

Anna: Hello everybody! It’s so nice to see you again, Cynthia. And you too, Eeva. It’s been such a long time! Cynthia: It’s very nice to see you, too! Have a seat! Ulla’s football match is about to begin. Eeva: How are you doing, Pekka and Anna? Pekka: Oh, pretty well. I’ve had some minor health problems; nothing that has been too serious. Anna: I’m fine, too. I had such a bad hangover earlier this morning, but it went away after breakfast. Jussi: Hangover?! Anna: No, not hangover, headache! I meant headache! Look, the game is starting! Cynthia: Does Ulla play offence or defence? Kalle: She plays defence. She’s a defender. Cynthia: Go Ulla! Anna: Go, Ulla! Pekka: She has also been the goalkeeper several times. Eeva: I could never do that. It’s so stressful. It’s such a huge responsibility. Kalle: Hey, that opponent is clearly offside and is still playing! Ulla’s team should get a free kick.
The referee blows her whistle.
Referee: Paitsiossa…
At the end of the first half, the score is tied, 1-1. In the second half, Ulla’s team scores two more goals, but the opposing team makes three goals. At the end of the game, Ulla’s team loses 4 to 3. They are good sports, and they say congratulations to the other team for winning the game.

Minna Jokinen and Tom Sharp are newlyweds. Minna is Pekka and Anna’s daughter, and Jussi’s younger sister. Tom’s parents, George and Sylvia, live in London, England. Tom enjoys living in the Helsinki Metropolitan Area and working in Helsinki. He sometimes misses living in London, though. Minna and Tom have seriously discussed moving there for a few years. George and Sylvia have said that they could live with them because London is so expensive, but both Tom and Minna are very independent. Also, they do not want to quit working (Minna as a dentist, and Tom as a chef) and to risk being unemployed in London. Moreover, Minna would like to keep having a good relationship with her in-laws.
Minna: I guess we have decided to stay in Finland, at least for now. Tom: Yes, that’s right. Let’s save up some money, and perhaps we could live there when we retire. Minna: I’d like to do that. Actually, we will probably want to spend more time at our cottage in Rovaniemi, too, when we retire. Tom: True. Minna: Well, we have over twenty years to figure it out. Tom: Right. Minna: So, on another topic, how about our kitchen renovation? Are we still planning to paint the walls and refinish the floor next weekend? Tom: Yes, I intend to take the day off on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Did you remember to clear your calendar for Friday? Minna: Oops, I forgot to do that. Tom: Minna! Minna: I’m sorry! I just need to see a few patients on Friday morning. I should be home by noon. Tom: Could we stay with your parents next Sunday night? We can’t be in the apartment then. The fumes will be too strong. Minna: Yes, I asked them, and they are fine with that. I can’t stand smelling fumes. Tom: Me neither. I really can’t stand to smell them. I get a terrible headache. Minna: So, how should we organise the reno? I think we need to mask everything first. Oh, I hate masking! Tom: I hate to mask, too. It’s so tedious. Minna: Do you like sanding the floor? I think that’s the next step. Tom: Actually, I like to sand. If you have a good sander, it goes quickly.

olevasta verbistä.
Tutustu esimerkkeihin ja suomenna ne suullisesti parin kanssa tai omassa päässäsi.
1. Perusmuoto, jossa mukana on pikkusana to
Yleisimmin jälkimmäinen verbi on perusmuodossa (= ilman päätteitä, ns.
sanakirjamuoto) ja sitä edeltää pikkusana to:
I intend to take the day off on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Did you remember to clear your calendar for Friday?Oops, I forgot to do that. Theme Vocabulary
At the home improvement store
The following day, Minna and Tom make a trip to the home improvement store. They need to buy a lot of supplies for their two kitchen projects. They get a large shopping cart. They begin in the paint department, which is next to the floor refinishing section.
Minna: Where to start... We need painter’s tape, paint brushes, rollers, paint trays, and masking materials for the walls and floors... What else? Tom: Well, some paint. And a stir stick. We already have a screwdriver to open the paint can, and a hammer to close the lid. Minna: Let’s look at the masking materials. What size do we need to cover the walls and the floors? Tom: Well, our kitchen floor is about 25 square metres. We could use the same wall masking materials on the floor, too. Minna: How many rolls do we need then? Tom: Three. Minna: OK, next, brushes and rollers. We have at least one large brush at home. Let’s buy a set of medium and small brushes. Now, how many rollers do we have at home? Tom: We don’t have any rollers, but we have some roller frames. Minna: There are two different kinds of rollers, so which kind do we need? Tom: This kind. Let’s get two of them. And two trays, too. And here are stirrers; let’s buy two. We can use one for the floor varnishing. Minna: How much painter’s tape do we need? Tom: We don’t need much tape. We still have some leftover from the bathroom painting project. Minna: OK, let’s choose the paint colour next. I have something in mind, but I want to get your opinion. Tom: I think we have lots of leftover bathroom paint. Minna: No way! That paint colour is too dark for the kitchen. How much paint do we need, though? How many litres? Ten? Tom: No, we don’t need that many. I think five litres is fine. We can always buy more paint later.

Canadian home improvement TV programmes
Canada produces many home improvement
television shows. The main audiences are
in both Canada and the United States,
but a person can watch these shows in
Finland (and many other countries), too.
There is usually a before-and-after part, so
you can see how a room or entire home
looked before and after the renovation
or makeover. Professionals often do
all of the renovation work, but the
homeowners sometimes do part of the
work.
Some home improvement programmes
show people how to do the renovation.
They can go to the home improvement
store to get supplies and tools, and then
they can do the project themselves. This is called
do-it-yourself (DIY).

Sanapaino ja lausepaino
Suomessa sanan paino on aina sen ensimmäisellä tavulla, mutta englannissa
painon paikka vaihtelee sanakohtaisesti. Ääntämisohjeissa sanapaino merkitään
symbolilla (ˈ). Symboli laitetaan aina sen tavun eteen, jolla paino on. Jos paino
on ensimmäisellä tavulla, tässä kirjassa sitä ei ole erikseen merkitty.
Esimerkkejä:
program PROgramme [prəuɡræm]renovation renoVAtion [renəˈveiʃən]professionals proFEssionals [prəˈfeʃnəlz]do-it-yourself do-it-yourSELF [du:itjɔ:ˈself]
Englannissa myös lauseen eri sanat saavat erilaisia painoja. Silloin puhutaan
lausepainosta.
