Not forgetting the NT’s largest agricultural sector, the beef industry, newly appointed animal health merchandise specialist Nick Freney will be on-site all day to meet and greet cattle producers. On a totally different level, Elders will be demonstrating a new product to Australia called Fire Knockout. Within five to six seconds of detecting smoke, Fire Knockout will ignite and spread a layer of fire- resistant spray, totally extinguishing the fire almost immediately. This product has enormous scope for use in farm machinery, power boats, caravans, trucks and workshops. Elders here to help out horticulture T REE care in the Northern Territory has reached greater heights with Charles Darwin University’s first-ever arboricul- ture course proving to be a success. Students undertaking the new certificate III in arboriculture put theory into practice by climbing trees in a workshop on Casuarina campus last month. The area was roped off and students wore harnesses and appropriate protective gear while they took turns climbing the trees and moving from branch to branch. Guest lecturer Richard Kenyon congratulated CDU for introducing the course, saying it promoted the correct management of trees in the NT’s urban environment. Mr Kenyon, who also operates his own arboriculture business in the NT, said students would gain important skills that would assist them in their trade. “Arborists are in demand in the Northern Territory,” he said. “Hopefully this course will encourage members of the public to take interest in the area.” He said the course would also help boost the level of skills in the NT’s arboriculture industry. The course includes classes on tree identification, environmental impact assessment, and occupational health and safety procedures. Students are required to have current employment in the arboriculture industry before being accepted into the course, which will run for three years on a part-time basis. Specialising in all water needs N ORTHERN Stock Water and Elsam Plastics is a privately owned Katherine-based company specialising in water development and irrigation products for farms, cattle stations and mines. Over the past few years alone, they have manufactured thousands of kilometres of poly pipe and concrete troughs for customers across the Northern Territory, the Kimberley and Queensland. Northern Stock Water was the first company in the Northern Territory to produce concrete cattle troughs. In order to supply a complete product range to their customers, they then started selling the parts needed to fit the troughs, such as poly and steel fittings, PE compression fittings and float valves. With increasing numbers of clients to please and orders to fill, Northern Stock Water is an ever- growing business. It currently employs 30-plus dedicated staff, including four highly qualified production engineers who each have at least 10 years’ experience in the industry. The team is led by company owner Adrian Brown, who started the company after years of hands-on experience in developing water systems on cattle stations. With their in-depth engineering knowledge of water flow, combined with their satellite-mapping services, they can design a water system that is the most effective for your particular piece of land – whatever the size and topography. Just recently, their Darwin-based retail and wholesale store, Elsam Plastics, has opened, stocking the full range of products. Also, they have just launched their brand of 2.5mm heavy gal barb wire, called Northern Stock wire. Northern Stock Water and Elsam Plastics are the only manufacturers of poly pipe and concrete troughs in NT. Locally based in Katherine and Darwin, Northern Stock Water is privately owned, dealing direct with customers, manufacturer to consumer, providing quality products, water-mark endorsed, ISO9001 quality assurance. Their capability includes supplying all poly pipe sizes; stocking a large range of Plasson fittings; supplying concrete troughs, aprons, floats and fittings; supplying liner tanks and mobile water storage tanks; supplying barb wire and fence posts; designing and installing full stock watering systems; and road train for delivery.
