NSW Aboriginal Community Controlled
STORYBOARD
Acknowledgement of Country
AH&MRC would like to acknowledge the traditional custodians of the lands in which we work, the Bidjigal and Gadigal clans, and acknowledge the traditional owners of the lands of our Member
Services across New South Wales (NSW). We wish to pay respect to all Elders past, present and the emerging leaders in the
Aboriginal communities across the state.
This storyboard provides a snapshot of some issues that can impact mental health. The data from this storyboard is drawn from the NSW Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Tracker 2020 and forms part of a series of storyboards which illustrate and tell a story about Aboriginal health.

Cultural identity
Self-determination,
leadership and
ownership of healing
are important to talk about to help people heal.
Knowledge of health,
local culture and
cultural identity
can also protect against risky behaviours and poor health including chronic conditions
such as mental health.
The evidence clearly shows that cultural identity
is a protective factor and strengthens mental health
and wellbeing for Aboriginal people.
