Eligibility: Only Indian citizens born betw een January 1, 2003 and Decem ber31, 2004 ,(both days inclusive)and are students studying in Class X or low er as ofNovem ber 30,2017,can apply and appear for NSEJS 2017.The studentm ustnotappearany ofthe seniorscience Olym piad. The studenthas to him selfre-assure his eligibility. Atany stage ifthe studentis found to be noteligible forthe exam , he/she m ay be disqualified from the program . Syllabus: The syllabus for N ational Standard Exam ination in Junior Science (N SEJS) is alm ost sim ilar as the curriculum of secondary level (Class IX and Class X) of CBSE.How ever,only basic guideline for the course is m entioned. No detailed syllabusisgiven forNSEJS. There w ere questionsfrom physics, m athem atics, biology and chem istry. Question Paper:The m edium oftest w as English only and it com prised of80 objective type questions,each w ith only one of the four options correct w ith 3 m arks each and -1 negative m arking for incorrect answ er. Qualifying for the Second Stage:The basic objective ofconducting this testis notfocusing on m eritbutto involve as m any students from the country to participate in the exam and try to show and expose their talent. H ence the selection to the stage IIexam inations i.e.Indian N ationalO lym piad Exam inations (IN O s)is based on the follow ing schem e: a)Eligibility Clause:To be eligible to getto the nextlevel,i.e.the second stage,itis necessary thata student scores at-least a M inim um Adm issible Score (M AS) w hich is 50% of the average of top 10 students across the nation. b)ProportionalRepresentation Clause: The m axim um num berofstudents thatcan getto Stage II(INO)in each subject is around 300. These m any students are not selected only on the m erit basis but also on proportionate basis.This proportion is decided on the base ofthe num berofcandidates who appeared forNSE in the previous yearfrom thatcenterin each State orUnion Territory (UT). In case there is a tie atthe lastposition, then allthe students com peting for the last position w illbe eligible to m ove to stage II.H ow ever it ’ s necessary thatthe selected studentsfulfill the eligibility clause laid outabove. The total num berto be selected from centers in each State foreach subjectw illbe displayed on the IAPT and HBCSE w ebsites.
