Dear Friends,50 years! It’s time to CELEBRATE! Our Annual Auction Night – Gala, on April 9th – is going to be a wonderfuldinner dance – All That Glitters! I am taking this as an opportunity to dress accordingly! Please join us as wecelebrate our 50th anniversary. This year we are going to have a wonderful buffet dinner to include appetizers, salads, entrée, dessert – all provided by some of the finest restaurants in Newark and featuring selections fromour own Culinary Institute of America trained chef, Chef Raymond Williams.

The evening will feature a wonderful, engaging Master G Entertainment. He came highly recommended to us assomeone who really can get everyone involved. We will also have a strolling magician to entertain and amaze us!Our silent auction items provide a great selection of local and regional items, vacation opportunities, restaurantgift certificates and so much more. We have a very generous business community that helps to make this eventa success.

I know that this will be a popular event so please gather your friends and get your tickets early. Fundraisers likethis are a terrific way to support the center but can also be so much fun. There aren’t many places that you canget a tremendous dinner, entertainment and possibly some great auction items for less than a dinner out at mostof our better restaurants in town. This type of support is invaluable as we piece together the many sources offunding to support all of the programs and services that have made the NSC a true community treasure.

As Chair of the Delaware Aging Network, I have become even more aware of the importance of communitysupport and the ability to offer quality and varied programs and services. As you know, much of what we do atthe Center is offered free of charge to members as well as others in our community. Some of these free services – like our support groups, tax preparation, access to counseling on insurance, financial and legalissues and simply a wonderful place to socialize are onlymade possibly by community support. As you know, westill need to keep the lights turned on and the roomsheated or cooled!

Thank you for all that you do to be an active participantin the community. Thank you for your ongoing supportof the Center – we look forward to serving the community for the next 50 years!

Community News FITNESS CENTER CORNERMarch is National Nutrition Month! One big issue outthere is added sugars. Sugar is hidden in products thatyou wouldn’t even expect. Foods like salad dressings, dried fruit, spaghetti sauces, breads, cereals, condiments, flavored yogurts, beverages, and evencrackers! Some good tips for watching your sugars areas follows. Read food labels and avoid buying foodswith added sugars like high fructose corn syrup, driedcane syrup, evaporated cane juice, invert sugar, molasses, sucrose, brown rice syrup, honey, agave ormaple syrup. Cut out sugary drinks as much as youcan. Drink water, low-fat or fat-free milk and 100-percent fruit or vegetable juice instead. Choosesnacks with no added sugar. For example, eat plainyogurt instead of flavored yogurt with whole fruitssuch as berries or pears. Grill fruits such as pineappleor peaches for a naturally sweet and healthier dessert. And finally, if you chose to eat dessert, eat smallerportions. Often a bite or two will satisfy your sweettooth.~ Contributed by Marci Mantegna, Fitness Center Site Manager,CardioKinetics

WHY SHOULD I PRE-REGISTER? - Often, in thenewsletter, you will be asked to register at theReception Desk. It is important that you do so forseveral reasons.1. We sometimes cancel a class/trip due to low registration. If you are interested and do not signup, you might miss out on a class/trip that you areinterested in.2. If a class is cancelled and you are not registered,we can’t call you to notify you of the cancellation. Then you come to the Center and are disappointedthat you have made the trip for a cancelled class. 3. Instructors will often ask us for a number of registrations. This helps them to prepare for theclass and make the appropriate number of handouts. 4. Room assignments might be able to be adjustedto accommodate a smaller or larger group, but thistoo depends on the number of registrations. ~Thank you!
