NATIONAL SOCIETY OF BLACK ENGINEERS UCF CHAPTER Issue 1
2014-2015 EXECUTIVE BOARD AT THE FIRST GENERAL BODY MEETING
NATIONAL SOCIETY OF BLACK ENGINEERS
Welcome back everyone! My name is Tiffany Brown and I will be
serving as your 2014-2015 Publications Chair. I hope you all have
had a fantastic and productive summer and are ready to tackle this
fall semester.
The executive board, including myself, are excited that you have
taken interest in joining our organization and we promise it will
be a decision you wont regret. This school year we have implemented
programs and events that will help you grow academically as well as
professionally.
We understand that there are many students who struggle with
balancing their course load and that is why we want to help you
reach success and continue to thrive in all your classes.
As far as professionalism, we will provide you with workshops
that will teach you what to wear, how to network, what to say, how
to improve your resume, and many other beneficial tips. Aside from
academics and professionalism, we also
want you to get involved with impacting the community.
As STEM majors we want to expose and engage the youth with
different methods of activities so they can understand how getting
an education can go a long way, being in STEM provides great
opportunities, and it can help them change their environment.
It is not only the youth we want to reach, however, but also the
parents because they can be a reinforcement of how valuable this
can be. We want to increase our standards and be the inspiration
that will get others to achieve their goals. Thank you.
Define NSBE NSBE UCF had its first General Body Meeting of the
year.

Greetings NSBE-UCF Family!! My name is Hardeo Chin and I will be
serving as your President for the 2014-2015 Academic Year! I am a
junior majoring in Aerospace Engineering. I was born in Kingston,
Jamaica but I'm also mixed with Chinese & Guyanese. Two things
I particularly love are Caribbean food and drumming. But enough
about me, let's focus on you, the membership!
I hope you all have had a productive, safe, and fun summer. My
Executive Board and I are truly excited this year for all the
things we have in store for you guys. This year our chapter will be
focusing on Innovative Programming and Streamlining Communication
to Increase Membership. As you know, we can't attract members
unless we have programs and events that capture your attention and
meet your expectations. On the flip side, we have no events to
plan in we don't continue to increase the membership and
communicate with you guys on how we as an Executive Board can serve
you better.
If you ever see me around campus, don't hesitate to come up and
say hi (I don't bite). Joining NSBE-UCF will be one of the best
decisions of your life. I look forward to personally meeting you,
as
we work together to excel academically, succeed professionally,
and positively impact the community.
PRESIDENT HARDEO CHIN
With the fall semester kicking off after a long summer, many of
us are finding it difficult to re-adjust to a full schedule of
classes. We and in some cases the entire semester. Ultimately, we
end up having to pull out all of the stops in order to save our
grades around final exam time. Part of our mission is to help our
members succeed academically so it is our job to provide our
members with quality programs to ensure they are excelling in their
courses.
In order to help our members stay focused throughout the
semester, our academic excellence chair Jordan Davis
hosts weekly study sessions. The goal of our Weekend SpeciA-List
program is to provide our members with a positive atmosphere in
which they can study in.
Being a student at a university with over 60,000 students, it
can be pretty difficult to find a study space for you and your
friends. At our weekly study sessions, we have an entire room
reserved just for our group to use. In addition to that, members
are strongly encouraged to assist each other in understanding
difficult homework problems or assignments they may have.
If youre interested in attending our study sessions, be sure to
follow the Facebook page for the exact time and location of the
sessions!

Hello everyone! For those who were not able to make it to our
first General Body Meeting, we discussed our vision and plans that
we, as a chapter, have for the school year. It was a great turn out
and we loved interacting with our current and new members. We
informed them about the history of NSBE such as when and where it
originated, who founded it, and how it expanded.
Then we introduced ourselves and the events that were coming up
which we are hoping all of our members will attend. By implementing
new things we are expecting great results and that you will be
benefited academically and professionally. Our meetings are
bi-weekly so we hope to see you at our next one so that we can get
to know you on a personal level. With all that being said, work
hard, be great, and enjoy the rest of your week!
by Albert Hourie
NSBE members Duval, Thierry, Akil and others volunteered on
Saturday, July 19 at Second Harvest Food Bank. Their vision is to
have A Hunger-Free Central Florida and they are doing this by their
mission To Fight Hunger in Central Florida. The members unloaded
boxes that contain food, water and toys. Several of the food were
either in a can or something else. Based on the expiration date,
the food was either tossed out or organized into a separate box in
order to be sent. The toys were then placed into separate boxes.
The members also removed the unused or destroyed boxes and threw
all non-edible food in to the garbage. NSBE UCF chapter and members
are dedicated to giving back to the community by any and all means.
This is one of many ways that we up hold our chapter vision and
national mission. I was extremely satisfied and excited about the
outcome of this event. It always amazed me on how well we can work
in a group to get things done. Its a great feeling to know youre
making a positive contribution to the community knowing how much
people live in poverty and or in need in food. I hope to do more
events like this, said Thierry Alerte.

From: Orlando? Originally Alabama
1.) Why did you choose Engineering as your major?
One day, when I was in 11th grade, my mother encouraged me to do
an Online Career Assessment. It indicated that I had a strong
interest in Biomedical Engineering. At that point in time, I had
never heard of that engineering field. I was familiar with the
traditional engineering fields, such as Mechanical, Electrical, and
Computer Engineering. I then began to conduct my own research on
this field. My heart was drawn to Biomedical Engineering because
Sickle Cell anemia runs rampant in my family. I have lost several
close relatives due to organ failure caused
by the disease. I was excited to know that I could use my love
for math and science to help my family. I want to make a
difference, as well as help advance the medical field to save and
improve lives. Yes, the doctors save the lives, but they would not
be able to do what they do without Engineers and Scientist. I am
pursuing a traditional engineering degree, Mechanical Engineering,
which will make me well-rounded for what I want to do in the
future. Then I plan on advancing my degree in the field of
Biomedical Engineering.
2) Have you had an internship, co-op, or job related to
engineering that you enjoyed?
I did not have an internship or co-op, but I had a job related
to engineering that I enjoyed a lot! While attending Florida
International University I conducted research in the Optical
Imaging Laboratory. I conducted research on various topics
pertaining to imaging. In addition, I performed a three-dimensional
optical tomography study with a newly developed near-infrared
optical imaging device on subjects with normal and abnormal breast
tissue. I then processed the data collected through Matlab. It is a
great feeling to know that this device has potential to pre-screen
for breast cancer. Words cannot describe how amazing this
experience was and I enjoyed it a lot!
3) As of right now do you have any plans after graduation?
Yes, of course! After graduation, I am planning on pursuing
higher education. I want to obtain a Masters Degree in Biomedical
Engineering. My plan is to one day work with the development and
advancement of artificial organs.
4) What is something you are passionate about?
I am passionate about giving back to the community in any way I
can. I have been extremely blessed all of my life and would like to
share that in any shape of form. Something that means so little to
me could me the world to someone else. I love volunteering
especially reaching out to the youth because they are the
future.

Major: Computer Engineering Minor: Mathematics Year: Senior
From: Brooklyn, NY Birth: September 9th 1. Why did you choose
Engineering as your major?
My decision of choosing to major in engineering was originally
made when in
Kindergarten my professor asked everyone in the class what they
wanted to be when
they got older. There were several careers options posted on the
wall. Wanted to be
different, I chose what I perceived to be the hardest word to
pronounce: engineering.
As I told my parents, their eyes glared in excitement.
Unknowingly, my father was an
Electrical Engineer. So throughout my life, I was enticed by the
technology I found in
my house. As I got older, my need of wanting to do something of
importance
increased. Having family born in Haiti, a place where theres a
lack of electricity and
technology, I wanted to do something that could contribute to
the growth of such places as well as in America. Later on,
having
2. Have you had an internship, co-op, or job related to
Engineering that you have enjoyed?
I have not had the pleasure of getting an internship or a co-op
opportunity yet. I wish to get one as soon as possible.
Texas Instruments, Northrop Grumman, Intel or any place that
will develop my knowledge of electronics or programming
skills is ideal. It would be great to get mentorship as early as
possible before I get deep into engineering.
3. As of right now, do you have any plans after graduation? Are
you continuing your education or heading
into the job market?
My plan after graduation is to go directly to the work field. I
will like to get apply the knowledge I receive from
school. I think UCF done a great job and Im confident I will do
well in my field. Engineering is such a great field, that I
constantly get excited about working on new projects and working
with others. Although I plan on going straight to the
work field, I do want to get my masters after some time. School
has an abundance to offer in electrical and computer
engineering, and Im also interested in math.
4. What is something you are passionate about? It could be a
hobby or maybe volunteering for a specific
cause on the side of attending work and school, etc.
I am passionate about inspire more youth to be great at what
they are trying to become and that they can become
what they want. Being born in Brooklyn, basketball and football
are the only things you might see someone trying to be
great at. Many people in those communities have accepted being
mediocre in what they do. Although we cant tell people
choose engineering, simply because its superior to everything
else, its great to see more people from the community
being great doctors, owning successful business, or being an
incredible parent.
