M E S S A G E F R O M T H E N S A A P R E S I D E N T A N D B O A R D O F D I R E C T O R SFor more than 50 years, the Nordic Skiing Association of Anchorage (NSAA) has provided the best cross-country skiing and outdoor opportunities for the families and individuals residing in Anchorage and its surrounding areas. That commitment begins with maintaining Anchorage’s world-class trail system.

As Anchorage grew in the early 1960s, so did support for a special network of recreational trails. These efforts were led by motivated parents who prioritized the health and wellness of their families and neighbors. They invested time, energy and resources to a long-term vision of Anchorage’s trail system and community health. This inspired trail design while hard work and advocacy brought the foundation of Anchorage’s modern trail system to life.

Today, NSAA’s focus has shifted from developing trails to improving, repairing and sustaining existing trails with extensive work and expert care.

Local skiers once used trails wherever they could – potato fields, prison farms, camper parks, animal shelter property and a military base – and trail grooming was all voluntary. In 1976, the city funded a contract to groom ski trails. Within seven years, the passage of a tax cap eliminated that funding. Supported by donations and volunteers, NSAA assumed trail maintenance and grooming.

NSAA’s community spirit, tenacity and volunteer-driven support truly embody Anchorage’s “Live, Work, Play” vision … with a special emphasis on play.

Today, thousands of enthusiastic skiers and bikers, walkers and runners, families and pet owners frequent Anchorage’s trails. Most have no idea who created and now maintains the trails they love. Many assume taxes and the municipality. But NSAA is responsible for the soft-surface trails. NSAA remains committed to enhancing the health and quality of life for Anchorage residents – Anchorage’s trail system is the nexus of that commitment.

NSAA continues providing Anchorage with trail work, high quality Nordic programs and community oriented events for all. But as a non-profit with no guaranteed financial support, NSAA’s success and work relies on individuals, businesses and organizations that support the common vision of a healthy Anchorage.

NSAA’s board, staff, volunteers and members, thank you for supporting NSAA’s mission and our community. Together, we will continue making Anchorage a special place to live and play.

“NSAA is vital to Alaska’s ski community, especially with their work in grooming and preparing Anchorage’s trails. Groomed trails are especially important in a winter city; it helps people get out and be active. Our racing programs at APU have developed some of the top athletes in the U.S. and the world. Groomed ski trails are essential for our success, and that success is only possible with NSAA’s work on Anchorage’s ski trails. ”
