Hello lovely Key Clubbers!
Can you believe it is already November???? Time is just flying by. I hope you all enjoyed helping out at
the carnivals last month. Those are always my favorite and I know that we had many to help so thank
you all that could volunteer and did.
Now, as we make our way into November, the fun continues! This month is Kiwanis Family Month and
we are kicking it off with Key Club week! I hope you all will participate in the activities we have
planned, as they will allow you to showcase your enthusiasm for service and your spirit towards helping
others, which is what Key Club is all about! We will be seeing more of our Kiwanis family relatives
including other Key Clubbers!
I look forward to seeing many of you at Fall Rally South on November 9th! I hope you are all excited
and I am so stoked for you all to see the crazy spirit and fun that Key Clubbers have together. We
have the spirit, so lets show it and help our division win the Spirit Stick!
For you seniors, I know this month will be stressful with college apps and the many other things that you
have on your plates, but just remember that you will make it through; we will make it. Take time to
relax and enjoy yourself, even if it is for a brief moment.
I look forward every week to meeting you and seeing you on Fridays at the meetings! Please feel free
to contact me with any questions you might have at any time. I just know this is going to be a GOLDEN
month!

Relay For Life: October 12th
At Relay For Life, many people came together to honor cancer survivors, remember loved ones lost,
and fight back against a disease that has already taken too much. Teams camped out overnight
and took turns walking or running around a track or path at a park. We also all raised funds to
donate toward cancer research. I have participated in the relay for 4 years now and I hope to
continue because it is for an amazing cause. This event is also enjoyable too as there are many
activities to participate in!

Regional Training Conference
On October 12th, I had the privilege of attending Region 10 Training conference with my fellow SSHS
Key Club members. After an hour of driving up to Santa Barbara, we arrived at Alpha Resource
Center where the Lt. Governors from Region 10 had planned out a marvelous day of workshops and
Key Club spirit. It was a pleasure to meet our CNH District Governor as well as the other Region 10 Lt.
Governors and the members they serve. Together we did icebreakers, cheered, and attended
workshops. Of the 3 workshops I attended, my favorite was the Meaning Of Service workshop. I was
able to hear what kind of service was meaningful to the other members in the region as well as
members from my own club. This will aid me in putting together service events for my own club that
members will be excited to partake in because it will involve what service means to them. It also got
me thinking about my own personal meaning of service, which by the end of the day, I had found. I
realized that serving my members so that they can help the community is my meaning of service. To
me, helping kids in any form is the golden treasure of service. I am so glad I got to be there to see
members from my club from each grade level learning and enjoying RTC. It made me feel good to
know that I was a part in getting them to this event and their step towards becoming future leaders.

HOLLOW HILLS On October 11, 2013, I volunteered at my elementary school, Hollow Hills Fundamental School. The Fun
Fair consisted of several game booths, a bake sale, its very own photo booth, raffles, and a few food
trucks. I helped out at the Can Smash. My job was to help set up the tin cans in a pyramid, find the
beanbags used to knock down the cans after they were thrown, and sometimes even collect the
tickets used to play the game! It was a lot of work moving around, but it was so much fun! The children
that came to play Can Smash were so cute. Everyone in our game booth was having fun, so it made
the job even more enjoyable. I’m glad I got to help out my old school. I got to see my old teachers
and classmates, and it was worth seeing the smiles on the children’s faces when they played the Can
Smash.

ELEMENTARY SCHOOL
On October 25th, I volunteered at Simi Elementary’s Halloween Carnival. I worked at
the toilet paper toss booth where students had to try to throw a roll of toilet paper in
a bucket. If they tossed it in, they got a stamp towards a prize. Mostly all of the
students at the carnival played this game because it was easy and fun for them. I
enjoyed working at this event because the kids were so joyful to be around. I also felt
accomplished because I was constantly working the entire 3 hours. I cannot wait to
volunteer at more Halloween carnivals next year!

MADERA
MOUNTAIN VIEW
6
The Madera carnival had such a good turnout with all of the new members from our club. There
were so many laughs and smiles from the volunteers. Overall the carnival’s atmosphere was lovely.
-Bertini Nguyen
At the Mountain View Harvest Carnival, our volunteers helped to set up and run various
activities for the kids to play and helped to take down the booths afterwards. Volunteering for
this was a fun experience working with kids and seeing the smile on their faces when they left
the games. Overall, it was truly a great time working with my friends and getting to know each
other much better than we did before. There was also a surprise appearance from the Key
Club President, Kaila!
-Nicolas Mintzer
SYCAMORE
At the Sycamore Halloween carnival, I was working with a good friend of mine. I really enjoyed
watching the kids put on that huge smile on their face when they knocked down some pins. It really
makes me want to work there again next year!

The Shoe Crew
Halloween Bash On Saturday, October 26, 2013, I attended the Shoe Crew’s
Halloween Bash Benefit Concert at 118 West Studios in Simi Valley.
The concert was set up by Ruby Visser for her Senior Project, and
the money the organization collected went to buying shoes for kids
who cannot afford new shoes. There were 11 bands that played at
the concert, and everyone dressed up in their Halloween
costumes. The bands played mostly rock/pop music, and everyone
had a great time! People were dancing, eating Halloween treats,
and being introduced to the bands on the red carpet. There was
even a guest performance by Disney Channel star Kenton Duty
from Shake It Up! I helped by donating two trays full of cookies to
the treat table and donating three pairs of shoes to the Shoe Crew.
It was an extremely well-organized event, and I had a great time
with other Key Clubbers and Santa Su students! Here’s Ruby
playing in her band, SKICK!

Pop Tabs
Throughout the year we collect pop tabs for Ronald McDonald house. This is a place in close proximity to a hospital where families can stay when their child is in the hospital. They recycle the pop tabs and use the money to help families pay to stay at the house as well as pay the utilities and other expenses needed to keep the house running. So keep collecting! They can be from canned beverages and even the tabs from canned food!
S.O.S. (Save Old Spectacles)
We are continually collecting glasses for SOS. Check with everyone you know to see if they have any old specs that they do not use anymore. Keep in mind, the end of the school year is ending and if every member brings in at least 3 pairs of glasses, our sponsoring Kiwanis of Santa Susana will throw us a pizza party!
Feeding the Homeless
Our club helps at 2 different locations for feeding the homeless and we could always use more volunteers! We help with set up, dinner service, dishes, and clean up after. o Stillwaters Cafe at Shepard of the Valley Church: Thursdays from 5-7pm o The Samaritan Center: 1st Thursday of the month

Projects Chair: Lorraine Ador Dionisio
Hi, my name is Lorraine Ador Dionisio and I am your former Service Project Chair for the 2013 - 2014
term. I am a junior at Santa Susana High School and I love Key Club! :) During this year, I have many
goals and ambitions for our club! This includes creating a new service project that we have never
done before. Some ideas include, bringing in empty water bottles or soda cans so we can recycle
them in order to raise money for a good cause! Also, we can organize monthly trash clean ups so we
can keep our community clean! Furthermore, I encourage all of our members to participate in all
volunteer opportunities. As your Service Project Chair, I want to find more volunteer projects that our
club can serve in so that people can get their minimum service hours and help out our community! All
in all, I have big hopes with our Key Club and I want all of you Narwhals to keep swimming in service!
Class of 2014 Representative: Serena Lee
Hey Key Clubbers! My name is Serena Lee. I’m 17 years old and a junior, to be senior. I am also the
Vice President of CSF and President of HOSA. I eat popcorn all the time and my passion is singing!...
My plan is to become a doctor, possibly an anesthesiologist. I'm also part of our school's Jazz Choir
and Interact Club. Outside of all the stressful school work, I play the piano and volunteer at various
places such as the hospital and the Parks and Rec Center where I help teach piano. Key Club always
reminds me though, even with all these activities that I’m a part of, that there should always be time
to help the community and even the world. Volunteer hours are important in creating a good moral
character and that’s why Key Club is important to me. I hope to work with our board and the 2014
graduates for a great upcoming Key Club filled year!
