At our meeting on 14th October we had an illustrated talk from Mr DavidCummings “The Wonderful World of Wildlife”.

He showed stunning pictures of the lives and habitats of so many wildcreatures from really frightening enormous crocodiles and grisly bears,to a delicate little humming bird, and so many other attractive, and notso attractive, inhabitants of our planet.

On November 11th we are having a talk by Patricia Burton aboutBritain’s and Liverpool’s involvement in the Slave Trade.

Meetings, which are open to all senior citizens start at 2.00pm in theVillage Hall. We hope that youcan join us - please contact eitherBetty Cook 01352 810722 orOlive Parry 01352 810294

Cyngor y Cymuned - Llanferres OctoberFrom the minutes of the meetingheld on 9th October 2014:- Present:Cllr. David Jones (Chair), Cllr. JohnAlmond, Cllr Rob Jones, Cllr. DavidTwomey, Cllr. Rob Armstrong, Cllr.Margaret Davies, Cllr Adrian Walls, CllrJac Armstrong, Cllr Yvonne FodenMcCorry and the Clerk Mrs GwynethDillon.

1. The meeting started at the earlier timeof 7pm to receive a report fromDenbighshire County Council's Bio-Diversity Officer, Ms ElizabethWebster, on the cutting regime onroadside grass verges. Ms Websteremphasised the importance ofroadside verges as wildlife habitats forwild flowers, birds, mammals, reptilesand insects (including butterflies andpollinators such as bees, bumblebeesand hoverflies). Recent surveys haveidentified over 130 species offlowering plants on roadside verges inDenbighshire. Denbighshire has a'Roadside Verges Project' with the aimsof reducing the intensity of the overallcutting regime, avoiding cutting toolow and cutting only once inAugust/September on verges withlimestone and acid grasslands withslower-growing vegetation. However, conservation has to be combined withsafety, so some cutting has to be doneon junctions and sharp bends toimprove visibility. Cost is also animportant consideration.

The meeting held on Monday October 13th involved members hearing aboutthe financial and general statistics of entries and problems associated withthe Gardening Show.

Financially, it was a great success in all departments with the exception of theplant stall which saw a slight drop in takings of £3.65. All other takings wereup, especially the auction receipts, where we were able to donate £90.00 to theLlanferres Old Peoples Welfare Committee.

The general statistic gave us 11 more entries than last year but these cameprincipally from the Art and Photograph sections. After a mixed year forgrowing, garden vegetables, flowers and pot plant entries all suffered smalldrops in numbers.

Members present all agreed, considering the weather, our 40th show was onceagain a successful event.

The next meeting will be the Annual General Meeting to be held in the VillageHall on Monday November 10th and will be followed by a members buffet.

Autumn Working Partyat Tafarn y Gelyn Pond

It is now over 11 years since the pond in Tafarn y Gelyn was officiallyopened. The community worked hard to create this amenity followingthe opening of the new road. It is now a haven for wildlife and ismanaged under the umbrella of the Llanferres Recreation & Playing FieldAssociation. The key tasks of this Autumn’s working partyheld on Sunday 19 October were repairingdamage to the steps, decking and handrail, cutting back nettles from the banks, removingbull rushes and pond weed from the waterarea & painting the railings.

Maintaining the pond is a delicate bal-ance between allowing nature to takeits course which enables wildlife tothrive and the careful management thatkeeps invasive weeds under control.Above Tony, Mike & Matthew doing theback breaking bull rush clearance. Oncethe plant material is removed from thewet area it is placed close by so that anyanimal life still in it can find its way backto the water’s edge.

Above left, Jane’s expert skills put towork on the steps & decking.

Removing a huge amount of water basedplant material has opened up the wetarea for next spring’s frogs and toads tospawn.

Jane CloughA well earned cuppa & thanks to all whoworked so hard.

Please note the Treasurer will be retiring at this AGM and nominations for hisreplacement are also sought.

New regulations - “The consumption of alcohol in the Village Hall will only beallowed with the specific authorisation of the Executive Committee. There shallbe a right to appeal to a full committee”.

To arrange consumption of alcohol, it is necessary only to contact one memberof the Executive Committee (currently Mr Rob Armstrong - Chairman / Mrs GayHeadley - Secretary / Mr David Twomey - Treasurer) who will discuss yourrequest with the other two members and respond within 24 hours. It is unlikelythat any reasonable request will be refused.

This has become a health issue for those collecting the waste - a badenough job as it is!! ( If you run out of bags then ask or tie a message tobin) or call 01824 706101 to order some more - they’ll be delivered veryquickly to your home.

Also another issue arising is that out of date food still in its package isbeing put in the orange bin.

Apparently damage is beingcaused to expensive machinery that deals with food only wastage.Should any culprits bespotted then their bin willbe tagged as a reminder -if this ignored thencollection of their wastewill cease - with a follow-up visit from thesupervisor!

We have had anothertwo full days ofbudget meetings atCounty Hall so farthis month with afurther two moreplanned before the

end of October. To date we haveidentified nearly six million pounds ofsavings and changes but these haveyet to be finally approved.

I expressed concern at the beginningof this process that because of the wayWelsh Government fund and control alot of what local government doesthrough direct grants, that the finalfigure to be cut from our budget maybe more than the announced ninemillion. Sadly I was right and we arestarting to hear about further cuts insuch things as direct grants foreducation and rural developmentfunding to name but a few.

Welsh Government has decided whatits priorities are for the coming yearand local government is certainly notone of them.

At the last school governors meetingthe head reported that they werehaving to regularly clear the playingfield of dog poo. As we all know dogpoo carries certain viruses that are veryharmful to children and on behalf ofthe Governors, children and parentscan I ask that dog owners pleaserefrain from walking their pets on theschool playing field. I have requested anew multi use litter bin and asked thatit is sited at the entrance to the park sothat it can be used by dog owners as

well. The bin will then be emptied bythe county council on black bin days.

So far this month I have attended bothbudget meetings, the monthly fullcouncil meeting, planning, partnershipscrutiny, social services and well beingand corporate equality. I have alsoattended Llanarmon and LlandeglaCommunity Council meetings, theAGM of the Denbighshire EnterpriseAgency, Ysgol Bro Famau Schoolgovernors and a concert at St TeclasChurch Llandegla. I took theopportunity to attend the ArmedForces Covenant day at the town hall inRhyl where a dozen or moreorganisations that help ex militarypersonal with support wererepresented. It was sad that it was notbetter attended and I think we stillhave a long way to go in advertisingsuch events and targeting those whowould benefit from them the most.

I must admit that I am not counting theshopping days to Christmas but I hopethat I will see you in the run up toChristmas at some of the events in thevillage.

Best wishes,Martyn

Although autumn is well upon uswith the trees changing into thebrowns and golden hues of theseason, it seems that summer has notyet fully departed. Early in Octoberthere were five species of butterfly tobe seen in our garden (Red admiral,Small tortoiseshell, Comma, Smallwhite and Speckled wood) and even asI write Red Admirals and Smalltortoiseshells are appearing on warmdays. The Speckled wood is not thatunusual as, being multi-brooded, itcan be seen any time from Marchthrough to October. It is uniqueamongst British butterflies in that itcan overwinter either in the larval orthe pupal stage.Only last week I was sent aphotograph of a quite large whitemoth (about 50cm or 2 inch wingspan) that had appeared in the porchof a house. It was easily identified asa Swallow-tailed moth which can varyin colour from white to pale-yellowwith two dark lines runningdiagonally through the wings. It getsits name from tail-like projections onthe edge of the wing most distantfrom the body, known as the termen. It is a quite a common moth but whatis unusual is that it normally flies inJuly. I have searched through mybooks and found references to itoccasionally turning up late in theseason, for reasons unexplained, andthere is a record of one having beencaptured at Gravesend on October22nd 1904.A lady rang to say that she had seen alarge, light-green caterpillar with ared horn on its rear end, crawlingacross a path and wondered what itcould be. I am pretty sure it is thecaterpillar of the Poplar hawk moth

whose 'horn' can vary from cream tored in colour. It is another commonmoth whose caterpillars feed on awide variety of tree leaves includingpoplar. At this time of year it will belooking for a place to pupate, belowthe soil surface, and they are knownto sometimes travel some distancefrom where they have been feeding. Some days our garden hosts manybirds but on others there are noneand their absence can probably beexplained by a female Sparrowhawkwhich sometimes sits on the birdtable or our neighbour's trellis arch. The female is brown on the wings andback while the male(tiercel) is bluish-grey but both have pale chests withbrown bars, yellow eyes and longyellow legs. The female is 25% largerthan the male but probably twice itsweight, not uncommon with birds ofprey. The male feeds on small birdsup to the size of a blackbird but thefemale can take prey up to the size ofa Woodpigeon.Numbers of this bird plummeted inthe 1950s and 1960s due to the use ofOrganochlorine insecticides such asAldrin, Dieldrin and DDT.Absorption of these chemicals causedvery thin egg shells, which brokeduring incubation, and in someintense agricultural areas theSparrowhawk was wiped out. Sincethe chemicals were banned it hasgradually increased and is probablyback to normal numbers. Somepeople blame Sparrowhawks for thedecline in small bird numbers butscientific investigations do notsupport that belief.
