LETTER FROM Hi again everyone!

Dang, where did the semester go?! I must say, so far it has truly been an honor serving as your President. !I seriously couldn’t have asked for better company! Whether you realize it or not, you all have made a huge impact on our community. !By donating even a couple of your hours of your time to do service with us, you have undoubtedly touched the lives of many, and that’s nothing to scoff at.

I hope that all of you have enjoyed your time with Circle K so far, whether you’re an oldie like me or if this is your first semester. !I hope you had the time of your life dancing the night away at Masquerade Ball, cheering your lungs out at Fall Training Conference, eating breakfast with us at GAG, or tutoring at Reality Changers. !Remember that you always have a home with us, and we’ll be back at it when Spring semester begins. !

Good luck to all on your finals and have an excellent winter break!

Love,

Yvonne Velasco

P.S. Make good choices and don’t do drugs!!P.P.S. Here is the last installation of “Puns with the President” for this year!

Hey guyyysss!

Next up on Keeping Up with Imani… lol I’m just kidding! But anyhoo- My month, while completely packed and full constant movement and things going on, it was still really good, fun, and enjoyable!

I went to my very first FTC and it was amazing! My car—Alpha Squad—was the best car and will always be Alpha! I hope that everyone who went to FTC, whether it was their first time or not, really enjoyed it and will go again. Instead of going to M-ball, which I really want to go to, Hershey and I went to the 5 Seconds of Summer concert and it was amaze-balls! My family—DOOM PATROL—and Phoenix Force had a joint movie social, and we all went to the midnight premiere of Mocking Jay and it was SO GOOD!

But that was my month and I hope yours was just as

jam-packed with excitement and fun as mine was. As usual, I will give you my song and movie of the week. Because One Direction dropped their album this month, the song of the month is ‘No Control’ from their album. And my movie of the month is Mocking Jay. Finals are approaching so good luck on all of your finals and Happy Holidays

Love Your Editor-in-Chief,

Imani Baldi <3

GAG CHRISTMAS TREE LOT SET UP

Kayla Crooks, general member

OUTSIDE THE LENS GALA SET UP  Outside the Lens in a wonderful organization that empowers youth to use digital media to create change within themselves, their community, and their world. At their small headquarters in Point Loma, we helped set up for Outside the Len’s “Shutter & Stout” gala event. We were split into groups, one cleaned out old candleholders so that fresh candles could be placed inside and the other group helped frame silent auction items. We helped them carry items from their headquarters to the Stone Brewery. I was glad we could be of service for a company that offers great programming at no cost for underserved youth. All of the volunteer staff at Outside the Lens were extremely kind and very much appreciated our help. They were super accommodating and offered us a plethora of snacks. Half of us after the event than attended the Phoenix Force shopping social and the other half walked across the street to eat at Stacked where we all tried 50/50 burgers.

SUSAN G. KOMEN: RACE FOR THE CURE 5K

Guatam Nair, general member  6

A few Circle K’ers helped out our fellow Kiwanians with setting up the Kiwanis tree lot. When we arrived, the older and much wiser Kiwanians gave us donuts. Then, a huge truck arrived on the lot. Two of the Kiwanis members opened the back of the truck and proceeded to take out and hand us everything that was in the truck. Some of these items included huge planks of wood, long metal poles, various kinds of tools, tarps, and holiday signs. After the truck was unloaded, we started to set up the tents where the trees would stay beneath. We put together the poles to form these tents and then put the tarps over them. Then, we put the wooden tree holders underneath the tents and folded the rest of the tarps that we did not use. One of the Kiwanis members gave us this amazing fruit and yogurt Jell-O when we were done setting up. Overall, I had a great time helping out the Kiwanis members. They were a blast to hang out with and I recommend volunteering at the tree lot!

The Breast Cancer Walk was my first service event and I am so glad I went! I went with Mitchell, and we met Jake, Marsha, and Gabriel. At the Breast Cancer Walk, we were in charge of a table handing out water to all the participants as they passed by. The beginning was slow, and not many waters were given out, but once the crowd arrived, Jake, Gabriel, and I were handing out water in overtime. In order for the water to be handed out, Marsha and Mitchell had to line up cups and fill them with water as fast as they could. Their backs have been slightly hunched since that day *cries*. Gabriel’s voice began to slowly give out as he cheered on the runners and yelled “WAAAAATER” repeatedly. No matter the amount of people that walked by, we kept them hydrated on that hot Saturday morning. Seeing Hershey and Imani go by and cheering them on was a great part of event. We ended a wonderful event with water, bagels, and Mexican food.

EMBRACE THE STREETS!

EMBRACE!

REALITY CHANGERS!

A group of us headed to Downtown San Diego to volunteer at Embrace the Streets, an event where we organized clothing and food that was donated to the homeless. When we got there, we started organizing all the different clothing, bedding, blankets and toiletries that had been donated. It was really awesome to see how much people were willing to give! After everything was organized, we had a quick lunch and then waited around until it was time to let people into the lot and choose their items. There were three different stations and then a free lunch. There was also a DJ playing the whole time and once people were allowed into the lot, it was really cool to see a lot of them just dancing and having a great time. For an hour or so, there were groups of people browsing the clothes and I absolutely loved seeing the look of gratitude on a lot of their faces. Since we finished a little early, we then all picked up some trash from the surrounding area. Overall, it was an awesome experience to work with others to give back to the San Diego community!

Continuous Projects!

Embrace is a bi-monthly event that delves in helping out with the homeless downtown. We collaborate with other community service groups and organizations whose common goal is to make a difference within the homeless community. Only a limited amount of us are able to go every other week, but those that do go never regret it! We are able to feed them and we also help clothe them with any type of shirts and pants that people donate. Embrace is an event that shows how much we make a difference!

Want to make a difference in the lives of first-generation high school students? Love to tutor? Then Reality Changers is the perfect program for you! Reality Changers is a program that helps tutor prospective first-generation high school students in various subjects and helps them complete their homework. An impressive statistic is that 100% of the participants go off to a 4-year college after high school! Everyone is welcomed to attend, but priority is given to volunteers who can make it on a consistent basis.

S-S-SOCIALS

BIG HERO 6 MOVIE SOCIAL

Zsoli Reynolds, general member

8

I always enjoy Circle K socials, but this one in particular really made my day, or week rather. We went to see the new animated movie Big Hero Six at the mall. I had seen very few of the movie in previews, concluding it was just about a boy and his giant pet marshmallow, but man was it so much more! It was one of the best movies I had seen in a while, having been filled with intriguing technological ideas, friendship, and amazing humor that sent everyone into laughter, causing everyone to constantly repeat lines after the movie (especially Kevin Z). It really did impress me, and I am big movie watcher. We even got to take pictures with a life size version of one of the characters, Baymax. Turns out, he’s not actually made out of marshmallow, sigh. But afterward we got to go out to dinner with everyone and share our favorites scenes with each other, and just catch up with one another in general. Overall it was a perfect night, and I am really glad I went. I also highly recommend anyone who hasn’t seen the movie to check it out. You won’t be sorry!

BONFIRE NIGHT

On the 14th of this month, we had a bonfire social at Fiesta Island. It was during the nighttime and Kristoff and I got lost on the way there. When we called around, we were told to look for a “fork on the road.” We had never heard of this expression before and thought someone from Circle K actually left behind a unique fork in the middle of the road… Anyways, when we finally arrived, I could hear familiar voices and used whatever source of light I could to find people. When I looked around, I saw that everyone was smiling, laughing, and just having a good time. It was nice to have a little break away from campus to chill with such an amazing group of people. It was also pretty chilly, so I stayed near the fire, ate pizza, and hugged Gautam to stay warm Hehe. We then headed to Studio Diner’s for dinner, where we pigged out and laughed the night away. It was a really laid back social and I’m looking forward to the bonfire happening at Fiesta Island again this Friday! Marsha Kim, general member

FALL TRAINING CONFERENCE

UCSD’s masquerade ball

Jake Wong, past president

9

Hello lovely people of Circle K!   It’s Linh and I am so honored to share my experience at masquerade ball with everyone! At dinner, I bonded with my mommy Vivian and Gabe and everyone over how we have been attacked by Marsha Kim. And after throwing some shades, we harmoniously shared bread slices amongst ourselves. Fun fact: bread=road to Melissa Farlow’s heart (You’re welcome, boys/girls!) . Then later on when we were on the yacht dancing, a random guy grabbed Simi’s waist and started dancing with her! And because I’m a terrific roommate, I ran away just in case he moved onto me lol. After burning them calories, Yvonne and I got fresh air and shared some deep conversations. This night marks the night that Yvonne realizes I’m such a wonderful mentee and she can’t live without me. Honestly there’s a bunch more of wonderful memories that I cannot fit them all in here! (ie: Andrew ripping his pants) I’m so thankful to have met every single one of you whether or not you were mentioned above! You’re all beautiful and Linh loves you mucho! Linh Phan, general member

I was not disappointed when I made the decision to attend the Fall Training Conference! The weekend was filled with various activities that showcased all the leadership and talent held within the Cal-Nev-Ha District. I never knew I could be immersed in so much spirit until I sat through a general session. Although other divisions had more members in attendance, they were no competition for us! The haka was showcased a few times during the weekend and it was great seeing the other clubs marveling at us. Choosing which workshops to attend was the most difficult decision of the day; I wanted to go to them all! I learned a lot about myself and this wonderful organization! Overall, I am very thankful to have had the opportunity to be surrounded by such altruistic, passionate, and SPIRITED people. I especially loved getting closer to the Circle K-ers from our club! My experience at FTC was priceless and I would recommend it to anyone who hasn't attended one yet for next year!

After 2 Fall Training Conferences, it still was pretty amazing getting to experience my last one. Although attending workshops weren't the most amazing thing to happen, it was nice to see the new faces trying their hand at workshops. It was exciting to see friends and new members being team captains, leading workshops, being on committees, or just seeing them in general. Although I only see some of these people twice or three times in a year, you build friendships as real as anything else. The hype will always be the same, and although you may be getting around 5 hours or less of sleep, if everyone does it together, it's not such a bad thing. All together, FTC is an amazing experience that I never regret attending, and I'm thoroughly going to miss it when I graduate. I LOVE YOU CNH (: Katie Chanthakhoun, general member

SDSU’S FIRST KEY 2 COLLEGE SDSU hosted our very first Key 2 College thanks to our very own Stephen Jin! We had a good amount of high schoolers come out this event! It was cereal themed, so all of the rooms where the workshops were held were cleverly named after them. The workshop hosted by Jasmine Fukutomi and Hershey Guzman was held in Cinnamon Toast Crunch—my favorite by the way—and another was called ‘Cheerios’. Altogether we had a total of 3 groups of workshops, with a lunch in between. We had Costco pizza and it was delicious! While everyone was continuing to get to know each other and eat, a couple people like Jake, Nadia and Jessica were rolling all around the room on their rolling chairs. While Gerald tried—and failed—to put on his ‘rachet’ playlist on spotify. He also played countless games while projecting them on the TV’s in there, so we could all enjoy them with him. After the workshops were done, there were tours given towards the prospective colleges/majors that the kids were interested in going into. After, we all talked and continued to get to know each other and answer any other lingering questions. Overall it was a really good, beneficial, and successful Key 2 College. Three cheers for Stephen!

Jasmine fukutomi!

Hi, I’m Jasmine Fukutomi. I’m a sophomore majoring in Biology, and I’m from the magical land of Camarillo! (jk most of you have probably never heard of it) !!

My interests include: napping, eating, anime/manga, videogames, watching TV shows, learning science, frolicking at the beach, rollercoasters, everything Disney related, and Pokemon. I also swam for 9 years and played water polo for 5 before college. Now all I do is take naps and play video games in my free time because I’m a bum! !!

I joined Circle K to make friends in this new environment, and I ended up with an entire family!

Fun fact: I’ve spent 2,023 hours of my life playing

League of Legends, which is about 84 days!

Page 19: November Issue 2014

19

Julia kinoshita !Fun fact: I was kicked out of the Vatican...

Neda heydari ! Hey I’m Neda your Social Chair! I’m a sophomore

and a computer science major soon to be doubling with Astronomy. My interests include going on random adventures with friends, camping, hiking, and binge watching shows and movies. However, I also have an extremely nerdy side because I spend a lot of my time reading comic books and I LOVE sci-fi! It’s definitely my favorite genre (hence the Astronomy). I tend to hide my nerdy side most of the time except for when I go to Comic Con every year and can embrace the nerdiness. Anyways, I chose social chair because other than planning socials, I love meeting new people! If I haven’t met you yet, feel free to come talk to me :D

Hey everyone! I'm Julia and I'm your technology chair! I'm a sophomore here at SDSU but I was born and raised on the island of Maui. I'm planning to be an Information Systems major. My hobbies include eating, going to the gym, music, and sleeping.

I mostly joined Circle K because I was looking to get involved on campus and find a group of people that I would fit in with. I came to college not knowing anyone and it was really hard for me to make friends. When I attended my first Circle K event, everyone was so nice and wanted to learn more about me. As a board member, my goal is to make new members feel welcomed like how I did when I joined Circle K.

Fun fact: I used to do judo and at one point I could throw a

guy more than twice my weight!
