6150 W. Greenbriar Dr. , Glendale, Arizona 85308 602-467-5500/Fax 602-467-5580 November 2013 Dear Greenbrier Parents, With the advent of the Arizona’s College and Career Ready Stan- dards, teachers in our Deer Valley schools are receiving extensive training in both Math and Reading/Language Arts to meet the in- structional shifts in these curricular areas. Our district has been involving staff in integrating individual teaching practices last school year and this current school year. You may have heard your child tell you that his/her teacher was absent already this year. More than likely, they were attending district training in either or both areas of Math and Reading/Language Arts. In addition, our staff development days each month (Early Release) are geared toward in- structional shifts in these curricular areas aligned to the new stan- dards. This month, I will address the instructional shifts in Math. Our goal with the new standards in Math is to ensure that all students know, like and are also able to apply mathematics as a direct result of a student’s school experience. Quality of instruction has the greatest impact on student achievement. The daily interaction between teachers and students, and among students, in the classroom, deter- mines how much and how well students learn. The shifts and strate- gies that guide high quality mathematics instruction at all grades is the focus of the new standards. The shift toward demonstrating, telling and letting students practice moves to engaging, focusing, un- derstanding and application. What exactly do these shifts look like? Here are the 10 shifts that our teachers are working to incorporate in their mathematics in- struction: ATTENDANCE 602-467-5590 NURSE'S OFFICE 602-467-5510 OPEN ENROLLMENT November 1, 2013- January 31, 2014 EARLY RELEASE DAYS!! November 2013
Dear Greenbrier Parents,
With the advent of the Arizona’s College and Career Ready Stan-
dards, teachers in our Deer Valley schools are receiving extensive
training in both Math and Reading/Language Arts to meet the in-
structional shifts in these curricular areas. Our district has been
involving staff in integrating individual teaching practices last school
year and this current school year. You may have heard your child
tell you that his/her teacher was absent already this year. More
than likely, they were attending district training in either or both
areas of Math and Reading/Language Arts. In addition, our staff
development days each month (Early Release) are geared toward in-
structional shifts in these curricular areas aligned to the new stan-
dards.
This month, I will address the instructional shifts in Math. Our goal
with the new standards in Math is to ensure that all students know,
like and are also able to apply mathematics as a direct result of a
student’s school experience. Quality of instruction has the greatest
impact on student achievement. The daily interaction between
teachers and students, and among students, in the classroom, deter-
mines how much and how well students learn. The shifts and strate-
gies that guide high quality mathematics instruction at all grades is
the focus of the new standards. The shift toward demonstrating,
telling and letting students practice moves to engaging, focusing, un-
derstanding and application.
What exactly do these shifts look like? Here are the 10 shifts that
our teachers are working to incorporate in their mathematics in-
struction:

1. Incorporate on-going cumulative review into each day’s lesson.
2. Adapt what we know in our Reading programs and apply it to Mathematics instruction
(moving from literal comprehension to inferential and evaluative comprehension).
3. Using multiple representations of Mathematical entities.
4. Create language - rich classroom routines.
5. Use opportunities to support the development of number sense.
6. Build information using graphs, charts, and tables.
7. Tie Math to questions i.e. “How big?, How much?, How far?” to increase the natural
use of measurement throughout other curricular areas.
8. Teach what is important and minimize what is no longer necessary.
9. Embed Mathematics into realistic problems and real-world content.
10. Make “Why?, How do you know?, Can you explain?” part of the classroom culture.
These 10 significant shifts represent a road map that will significantly enhance the quality
of our teaching and impact student achievement. If you have further questions regarding
how your child’s teacher, at any specific grade level, is incorporating these instructional
shifts into their classroom, ask them.
Sincerely,
Jody J. Brammer Jody J. Brammer Jody J. Brammer Jody J. Brammer
