Abdul Kalam, Former President of India on 23 November 2012. Delivering the Foundation Day Lecture, Dr. Kalam shared his experiences of knowing a lady with an indomitable spirit to acquire a Masters Degree at the age of 88 and a car driver with a great spirit to obtain a Doctorate Degree. While recalling the dedication of some of his teachers, he urged all teachers present on the occasion to radiate knowledge and be true facilitators of learning. Dr. M.M. Pallam Raju, Minister, HRD, GOI lauded the efforts of the NIOS which had grown from a modest project to an institution of international importance. He felt that the need of the hour is to pool all its resources to provide skill education through all possible modes. Dr. Shashi Tharoor, Minister of State, MHRD, GOI said that the adoption of an intelligent paradigm of ODL education can go a long way in providing quality education. The NIOS, he pointed out, should be a part of an endeavour to provide a well integrated system complimented with quality skill education. Appreciating the contribution made by the NIOS, Sri. ApoorvaChandra, Joint Secretary, MHRD, GOI emphasized on theimportance of social commitment and urged the NIOS to invest inbetter services for the learners.
The First Silver Jubilee Lecture titled “A New Paradigm for OpenDistance Learning for India” was delivered by Prof. M.B. Menon,Asst. Vice-Chancellor, Wawasan University, Penang, Malaysia. Hislecture focused on the critical areas of debate in the ODL systemsuch as social commitment versus revenue generation, growth alongwith quality versus growth without vision and control, competitionversus co-operation etc.
Earlier, the programme began with a Welcome Address by Dr. S.S.Jena, Chairman, NIOS who presented the contributions made bythe NIOS in the process of growing from a tiny seed to a huge banyantree, making an appreciable contribution to bridge the gap betweenformal and informal education.
Sri U.N. Khaware, Secretary, NIOS and Dr. Kuldeep Agarwal, Director(Academic), NIOS proposed the Vote of Thanks for the two sessionsof the programme.
A colourful evening of cultural programmes was presented by theNIOS learners from Father Agnel School, Tamana School of Hope,Deepalaya School, Akshay Pratishthan and Shikhar Organisationfor Social Development.
NIOS SILVER JUBILEE LECTURE
The Second Silver Jubilee Year Lecture of the National Institute ofOpen Schooling (NIOS) was delivered by Prof. Asha. S. Kanwar,President and CEO, Commonwealth of Learning (COL), Vancouver,Canada on 21st December, 2012 at the India International Centre(Annexe), New Delhi.
Titled “Scaling Schooling for the Secondary Surge: What are theOptions,” the lecture covered the different options which canaccommodate the Secondary Surge such as the Open SchoolingSystem, Open Educational Resources (OER) and ICT.
Speaking in the context of“Education for All”, she pointedout the need to reach out to 400million children in the age groupof 12-17 years who are out ofSecondary School and if giveneducation, can become hugeassets. She also said that thethree options which couldaccommodate the SecondarySurge include i) the OpenSchooling System which hasinbuilt flexibilities and is cost-effective ii) Quality OpenEducational Resources (OERs)which are freely available to beadapted/adopted and ii i)appropriate use of technologiessuch as mobile phones asteaching-learning devices,

The Manthan Award is a first ofits kind initiative in India torecognise the best ICT practicesin e-Content and Creativity. TheNIOS has been selected aswinner for its NIOS Onlineinitiatives under the category ofe-Education and Learning. Theaward consists of a Manthan
Trophy and a certificate recognising the Online ICT initiatives byNIOS. The award was conferred during 9th Manthan Award GalaSouth Asia & Asia Pacific 2012 at India Habitat Centre on 1st Dec.2012.
NIOS RESULTS DECLARED
The National Institute of Open Schooling declared its Secondaryand Senior Secondary, October 2012 examination results on14.12.2012. In Secondary, about 1,53,592 learners were registeredand 1,38,120 learners appeared in the examination as against1,27,967 learners who appeared during the last October 2011examination. Similarly, 1,72,833 learners had registered and1,61,252 learners appeared in Senior Secondary as against1,45,781 learners who appeared in the last October 2011examination. There was about an 8% increase in Secondary andabout 11% increase in the number of Senior Secondary candidatesappearing in this October examination.
The results were declared in less than 4 weeks from the last date ofthe examination. The learners could view and download their resultsfrom the NIOS web site www.nios.ac.in. The results were also madeavailable on the websites: www.indiaresult.com andwww.examresults.net
The results were also sent to the user’s email id given at the time ofaccessing the result from the NIOS website. The results were alsomade available through SMS and IVRS – Toll free number18001809393 for all users. For Sr. Secondary - NIOS12 <rollno>and for Secondary NIOS10 <rollno> had to be typed and sent to5676750.

The Vocational EducationDepartment organized aTeleorientation programme on“Promotion of VocationalCourses” for the coordinators ofAccredited Vocational Institutes(AVIs) of National Institute ofOpen Schooling, at EMPC,IGNOU, New Delhi on 26December 2012.
The programme wascoordinated by Dr. PraveenChauhan, Academic Officer,Vocational EducationDepartment, where in severalNIOS officials, experts in the fieldof vocational education as wellas representatives from AVIstook part in the programme.Panel discussions were held onthe Promotion of New Coursesof NIOS; role of AVI Coordinatorsin Admission Process andCourse Transaction andPromotion; and Facilitation andEvaluation Process. Each of thepanel discussions were followedby a Question–Answer Session.

In an exhibition organised at theGarden of Five Senses, New Delhiunder the auspices of the DelhiTourism and TransportationDevelopment Corporation (DTDC),Govt. of Delhi on 8th and 9th December2012, the National Institute of OpenSchooling (NIOS) set up a stall for thedisplay and promotion of NIOSPublications and programmes.
This proved to be a good AdvocacyProgramme for NIOS as relevantinformation on queries related to OnlineAdmission, On-Demand examinationand Academic and Vocational
Education put forward by a large number of visitors, mostlycomprising of youngsters, could be provided at the stall.

• Opening of a Study Centre at Koraput Jail
Mr. Sachin R Jadhav, Collector,Koraput and Dr. Sitansu S. Jena,Chairman, National Institute of OpenSchooling (NIOS) inaugurated anNIOS Study Centre at Koraput Jail,Odisha. Speaking on the occasion,Dr. Jena said that this is a uniqueopportunity given to the inmates toimprove their educationalqualification in jail. Mr. Jadhav,Collector, Koraput said that this willhelp in their settlement once theycomplete their jail term. Heencouraged the inmates to avail thisopportunity in large numbers.Mr. R.K. • Dr. S.S Jena, Chairman, NIOS inaugurated the “Coordinators’Meet and Capacity Building Workshop on “Effective PCP” atKoraput, Odisha conducted under the MHRD-UNFPA supported‘Adolescence Education Programme’ (AEP). Conducted by Ms.Asheema Singh, PC (AEP), NIOS, the workshop was held from29.11.12 to 01.12.12 at DNK Conference Hall. About 29coordinators and tutors of NIOS study centres from Koraput regionparticipated in the intensive three day workshop which wasorganized to teach participatory teaching techniques to NIOStutors. Prof. G.S Mahapatra, Educationist who was the Chief Guestfor the Valedictory Ceremony spoke about the role and qualitiesof a tutor and advised the participants to reach out to the largenumber of out of school young people. Pointing out that KBK(Undivided district of Koraput, Bolangir and Kalahandi) isconsidered the most backward area of South-East Asia, hecongratulated the NIOS for initiating this kind of an endeavourand also appreciated the untiring efforts of the concerned officials.

• The review workshop for Rural Entrepreneurship Project i.e.Basic Computing and Banking and Insurance and Secondarycourse material in subjects: Psychology, Home Science,Business Study and Economics was held on 23rd and 24th Nov.,2012 at Regional Centre Gandhinagar in which 15 membersparticipated.

• OER Workshop in Rural Technology
A three day workshop was organised by the NIOS at M.E ComputerLab of MIT, Pune for the development of Open EducationalResources (OERs) in the area of Rural Technology from 23 to 25th
November 2012. The Objectives of the workshop were to finalizethe OERs prepared in the workshops held earlier; to prepare a finaldraft of the third OER with inputs from Peers and Experts; and tosearch the available OERs for adaptation.

Science Conference on “Prosperity through Science” organizedby the Marathi Vidnyan Parishad from 7-9 December 2012 atGadima Auiditorium, Vidyannagari, Baramati. A large number ofvisitors from all over Maharashtra visited the stall. The Promotionmaterial in Marathi was distributed in the exhibition.
