Message from the President

I would like to wish everyone and their families Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. As we enter the beginning of a new year we have some things to think about. We have a vacancy for the treasurer’s position which needs to be filled. This year marks our 20th Anniversary as a club. I hope that people who have been in the club for any of this time, especially the original members, will come forward and help us put together ideas and activities to celebrate this milestone. After all this is your club and requires your involvement to make it even better. We had a lot of activities in 2011 of which many of you participated in. I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone for all that they did to make it a great year. Deerfield Fair especially requires a lot of people to make it happen and I thank everybody who had a hand in it. So have a great Holiday and we will see everyone in January to volunteer for making our anniversary and this new year the best yet!

Your President, Jim Rosencrantz

GRAM FABIAN'S DATE-FILLED MOLASSES COOKIES

Ann Prest

1 c. sugar 2 tsp. baking powder 1 c. molasses 1 tsp. salt 1 c. shortening Filling - ingredients follow 1 c. cold water 1 pkg. dates, chopped 2 tsp. vanilla extract 1/2 c. sugar 6 c. flour 2 T. flour 1 tsp. baking soda 1 c. water Mix the sugar, molasses and shortening. Add cold water and vanilla extract; stir until blended. Add flour, baking soda, baking powder, and salt. If you need more flour add enough to make a stiff dough - you may need an additional cup. Roll out about 1/4 of the dough keeping board well floured. Roll thin to about 1/8 of an inch. (Don't forget 2 of these will be put together after filled.) Cook at 350° for 14 minutes. YOU DO NOT WANT TO BROWN THEM. NOTE: I find using a square or rectangular cookie cutter eliminates pieces being recycled. FILLING: Mix dates, sugar, flour and water. Cook until thick. Makes a soft delicious cookie. Store in a tightly covered container to keep soft. Cookies can be frozen. Note: This recipe is over 100 years old and a traditional Maine Christmas cookie.
