Stem Cells We have over 200 types of cells in our bodies

that all have specialized jobs.

..But we start out as a single-celled, fertilized egg.

How do we go from one cell to hundreds of types of cells?

Stem Cells Stem cells are cells that have the

unique ability to develop into a variety of specialized cells.

Stem cells develop into specialized cells through a process called cell differentiation.

Page 4: November 5, 2013

Stem Cells Stem cells will differentiate depending

on:1. The environment they’re in, and2. Their location.

Outer = Exoderm Middle = Mesoderm Inner = Endoderm

Stem Cell Classification Stem cells can be classified in 3 ways:

Page 6: November 5, 2013

Stem Cell Classification Stem cells can also be classified by their

origin:1. Somatic stem cells are found in

developed humans (children and adults) and in umbilical cord blood.

2. Embryonic stem cells are taken from a cluster of undifferentiated cells in a 3-to-5-day-old blastocyst.

Page 7: November 5, 2013

Stem Cell Classification Blastocysts are only used to create

embryonic stem cells when donated by patients undergoing in-vitro fertilization treatments.

Page 8: November 5, 2013

Stem Cell Research Currently used to treat a variety of

diseases, including leukemia and lymphoma.

Incredibly hard to do! Stem cells want to differentiate & will do

so spontaneously.
