Let Us Pray! O Lord, giver of life and source of freedom, I know that all I have received is from your hand. Gracious and loving God, You call us to be stewards of Your abundance, the caretakers of all you have entrusted to us. Help us to always use Your gifts wisely and teach us to share them gener-ously. Send the Holy Spirit to work through us, bringing Your message to those we serve. May our faithful stewardship bear witness to the love of Je-sus Christ in our lives. We pray with grateful hearts, in Jesus’ name. Amen.

Grant to Them O’ Lord,
And Let Perpetual Light shine on Them.
Today is the final Sunday of the
liturgical year. Next Sunday we
will start a new year with the
First Sunday in Advent. On this,
the last Sunday of ordinary time,
we also celebrate the feast of
Jesus Christ the King. Today somehow sums up all of
the readings and Gospels we have been hearing through-
out the year. We have been hearing about traveling
around the towns and regions of Galilee, Samaria and
Judea. We have been hearing about Jesus teaching, heal-
ing, consoling, and challenging the religious leaders of
his Time. We have been hearing about Jesus the Christ
who is our Lord and King. He is the visible presence of
God in our midst. The readings for today’s Mass present
us with two very different images of Jesus. The first
reading and Psalm both point to Jesus as a shepherd who
will look after and tend his sheep as a shepherd tends his
flock when he finds himself among his scattered sheep.
In the second reading however Paul presents us with a
powerful image of Christ as Lord and King. He reminds
us that just as all have died because of the fall of Adam,
so all will be made alive in Christ. Jesus Christ is pre-
sented as the all-powerful ruler to whom every other
power and authority must eventually give way. Paul tells
us, “He must reign until he has put all his enemies under
his feet.” Jesus represents life in all its fullness and one
that he wants to share with every single person. In the
Gospel, Jesus teaches what we must do in order to shat
the fullness of life he wants to share with us. Jesus
teaches that if we hope to be counted among his
sheep, then we must be loving people even if and
when we may not feel loved back. This is the way
God loves us. Fulfilling obligations or practices of
personal piety are not enough if they are not backed
with actions that benefit others. It is not enough to
say, “I am a good enough Catholic because I go to
Mass every Sunday” if we don’t put our faith into
action by caring for and loving others. As members of
His flock, we are expected to go out of out way and
reach out with love and compassion, especially to
those in need – the hungry, the
thirsty, the stranger, the poor and
naked, the sick and those in prison.
This is the King we are called to
honor and serve and the way we
can do it is to be filled with love,
care, and compassion for all of
God’s people, especially those
who find themselves furthest from him. The image of
Judgment presented in the Gospel presents us with a
challenge not about where we will be in the future but
about where we are today because where we find our
elves today, the king we find ourselves worshiping
today, will determine where will be in the end. The
best way to know that we will be numbered among
His sheep is for us to BE, NOW, in this time and
place, loving, caring, compassionate Catholics to
wards all of God’s people.

Good Advice The book Don’t Sweat the Small Stuff by Richard Carlson has a lot of good advice. One suggestion is to treat your family members as if it was the last time you were going to see them. We’ve all heard the advice for married cou-ples, “don’t go to bed mad.” Sometimes when we are an-gry, it’s difficult to reconcile with our spouse before we go to sleep. But, heaven forbid, what if they were to die during the night and we never had a chance to apologize? This can pertain to any close relationship. I once heard a story of a mother and daughter who were arguing first thing in the morning. The daughter angrily stormed out on her way to work. A few hours later, the mother was informed that her daughter had been killed in a car acci-dent. The mother lived in anguish for years because the last words she had said to her daughter were harsh. The two never had a chance to say good-bye or “I love you” one last time. Years ago, my husband and I were having a disagreement in the car on the way to work in downtown Pittsburgh. He would always drop me off near my building and drive across the river to park where they had cheaper rates. That day, I got out of the car and, with a harsh last word, slammed the door. As I headed to my building, the argu-ment was gnawing at me and I knew it would be a wasted day at work if I didn’t make it right. So I spent fifteen minutes or so walking around Pittsburgh and timed it so that I could intercept him on his way to his office and apologize. It is human nature to occasionally take our loved ones for granted. The song “You Always Hurt the One You Love” often rings true. We are pleasant with our co-workers, classmates, and sometimes even strangers, but we take out our stress and frustrations on family members – the ones who least deserve it. How is that fair? If you knew you would never see your loved one again, would you waste time with petty arguments or hold grudges? Try to appreciate every minute you have with your family members and friends – there might not be a tomorrow.
