November 2019 The Beacon participant spotlight for November is Jeanne Rankin! Jeanne first came to the Beacon senior activity center because her friend recommended it. She has worked in retail stores for most of her life. Jeanne enjoys playing cards, listening to music, knitting, cross-stitching, latch hooking, embroidering, plastic canvasing, crocheting and having picnics anywhere she likes. Jeanne also says she enjoys any and all sports so long as her team is winning. With a great sense of humor and a quick wit, Jeanne loves making other people laugh and you never know what she might say next. When asked what Jeanne likes about Beacon center she answered “It’s quiet here but there’s always a lot going on too.” Jeanne has one brother, 2 nieces and a sister in law and was born and raised right here in Tacoma. Just speaking with Jeanne seems to put you in a great mood and we here at the Beacon thank her for that. 415 S 13th St—Tacoma Open M-F from 8a-3p 253-301-3369 415 S 13th S | Tacoma, WA 98402 | Open M-F, 8 am - 3 pm | (253) 301-3369

The Facts About L-Tryptophan
L-tryptophan (or just Tryptophan) is an important amino acid. The body can't produce it, so our diet must supply it. Tryptophan is used by the body to make niacin, a B vitamin that is important for digestion, skin and nerves, and serotonin. Serotonin is a brain chemical that plays a large role in leveling our mood and can help to create a feeling of well-being and relaxation. "When levels of serotonin are high, you're in a bet-ter mood, sleep better, and have a higher pain tolerance," says Elizabeth Somer, MA, R, author of numerous nutrition books, including her latest, Eat Your Way to Happiness. Tryptophan is needed for the body to pro-duce serotonin. Serotonin is also used to make melatonin, an essential hormone that helps to control our sleeping and waking cycles.
Turkey: The Sleep Inducer? As it turns out, turkey contains no more of the amino acid tryptophan than other kinds of poultry. In fact, turkey actually has slightly less tryp-tophan than chicken, says Dawn Jackson-Blatner, RD, LDN, an American Dietetic Association spokeswoman and author of The Flexitarian Diet. Jackson-Blatner says that if we're sleepy on Thanksgiving as a direct re-sult of eating turkey, then eating other foods rich in tryptophan should have the same effect.
