Turning Pages

Hello again, and welcome to another issue of Turning Pages, a round-up of news from Wickman and from the wider world of engineering. If proof were needed, it’s a simple demonstration of the global nature of modern business. We’ve got stories from Poland and from China, from the USA and India. Even though we all speak different languages, our common thread is our trade and our fascination with production, efficiency and innovation. The curious mind doesn’t seem to have a language barrier.

We hope you enjoy the catch-up, and as usual, we’re interested to catch up with what our readers have been doing. If you’re working on something new and exciting that you can share, we’d love to hear about it. If you’re struggling with a problem, our readership might have the answer. Constantly turningAs we’re writing this, it’s mid-November and there’s already a strong sense that we’re rushing towards the end of one year and the start of the next. The world keeps on turning and – if you’ll excuse the cheeky link to our business – in more ways than one. Despite some gloomy predictions about the Brexit effect, we’re still seeing optimism and growth in the manufacturing sector. Businesses are continuing to invest, pushing for increased efficiency and expanding their export trade.

Engineering is, of course, fundamental to the manufacturing sector and, close to home, we’re experiencing that growth in a strong order book. We’re also seeing businesses become smarter in the way they utilise their resources. Many are freeing up under-used equipment and specifying the precise kit they need for optimum cost-effective production.

It’s all good news and it’s keeping us very busy, which is possibly why the new year is approaching so rapidly.

Dates for the new diary – 2018 You don’t need an excuse to travel when you can combine the trip with an explorati on of new technologies, techniques and a bit of networking. Pop the dates in the diary and get the fl ights booked. We’ll see you there.

Great progress in China Our partner, European Turning Technologies (ETT) is building a new facility in Jiangsu Province, Kunshan, China and we’re delighted to report excellent progress. In the last editi on, we showed you pictures of earth-moving plant and foundati ons in progress. This ti me we’ve got steelwork on site and being erected. At this rate, the plant will be completed in no ti me – which is good news because there’s a real appeti te for multi spindle technology in Asia.

There’s another Wickman machine in Norway

CCMT – Shanghai, ChinaETT will be at exhibiti ng at CCMT in Shanghai from 9–13 April 2018. CCMT is the China CNC machine Tool show, a biennial event and one of the principal trade fairs for the industry. As well as the very best CNC machines, components, machine controls, encoders and linear systems will be on display.

From June 10-15, 2018, the Precision Turned Parts Manufacturing Associati on of Ireland is taking a look at the future of the turned parts industry. There’s a full programme of events and delegates are expected from all over the world including Switzerland, USA and China. Anyone who is anyone will be there!www.sidcongress.ie/2018

Now, in truth, we don’t know how many existi ng Wickman lathes there are in Norway. A product with both a long history and remarkable longevity does tend to get around. But we do know we’ve just added another Wickman multi spindle to the country’s populati on.

Our customer already had a Wickman machine in their stable and must have been impressed because they’ve chosen a 6-44 ACW with turnkey components.

We’ve just shipped the machine and wish its new owners a long and producti ve relati onship with some superb new Wickman technology.

News from Wickman India Our Wickman India branch has just had their fi rst order for a Wickman 6-44 CNC lathe. The machine is a real workhorse and is easy to maintain, but it’s also an advanced piece of equipment that’s reliable, easy to set and off ers the benefi t of rapid cycle ti mes. We’re sure it will be the fi rst of many such orders.

There’s more to Wickman than Wickman Although we’re dedicated to Wickman machines, we know that other manufacturers produce fantasti c equipment too. That’s one of the reasons we work in partnership with other specialists in the metal turning industry and indeed sell other manufacturer’s lathes and ancillaries.

We’ve just delivered a Mori-Say TMZ lathe to a UK customer. It was the ideal fi t for their needs. So even if you think a Wickman machine isn’t for you, you can sti ll trust the Wickman team to source the right machine.

42 years … …you’d get less for murder!

Yes, we’ve all heard the jokes, but the way we see it, Don Atkins must have been happy to spend 42 years working

at Wickman. And why wouldn’t he be? We produce a fantasti c product, we’re mad about machines and we get to solve problems. It’s a perfect way to spend four decades. We’ll miss Don, and his experti se, but we do wish him a very happy reti rement.

We asked Don if he wanted to do an interview, maybe to talk about how things had changed, but he declined, although he did, fi nally, consent to a photo.

Wickman USA update Our USA operati on is reporti ng lots of enquiries and has secured orders for not one, but two ACW- 682 machines.

It’s been a successful few weeks – last month, Wickman USA won a Technical Member Parti cipati on Award from the Precision Machined Products Associati on. The award recognises Technical Member companies who have delivered an outstanding contributi on and service to the associati on.

Tangi-Flow lasti ng quality and precision Tangi-Flow tooling provides the most eff ecti ve means of producing accurate, true and parallel diameters with maximum repeatability, minimum cycle ti mes and surface fi nish as low as 4 CLA. They’ve got tools for all machining needs: capaciti es as low as 1.3mm and up to 51mm. A range of shank sizes, alternati ve radii, metric and imperial, right-hand or left -hand rotati on, internal or external broaching, conventi onal materials and new alloys. And, on top of that, Tangi-Flow has broaching heads capable of producing hexagonal and square holes on lathes – without stopping the spindle – at speeds and feed rates that match drilling.

The Tangi-Flow name is an indicator of quality and Tangi-Flow roller boxes are sti ll working hard when the fakes are in pieces. Other manufacturers may try, but they can’t compete for overall performance, accuracy, cost-eff ecti veness and longevity. What’s more, because quality is worth holding onto, the Tangi-Flow team rebuild and restore roller boxes whenever they can.

Penta – powerful and aff ordable In the last editi on of Turning Pages, we introduced Mori-Say’s latest model, the TMZ518CNC, and we think it’s smart design and great value capabiliti es are worth another look. The machine is a fantasti c way to achieve high outputs and outstanding precision with reduced manpower and for a modest investment.

The Penta has been designed to suit the needs of a younger workforce with full CNC operati on, easy programming and rapid set-up. It’s also capable of lights-out operati on, always an important considerati on in these competi ti ve ti mes.

Here’s a quick recap of the features:

It’s an impressive list, but the machine’s even more impressive up close. Why don’t you ask us for a demonstrati on? Email Owen Coyne for more details: [email protected]

Yes, you can use a Cucchi The other day we were asked a questi on about whether a Cucchi bar loader could be adapted to work on a certain type of machine. Straight away we said yes. The questi oner seemed surprised that we didn’t need to check. But really, we had no need to. Cucchi engineers are experts at the bespoke job and their bar-loading soluti ons are adaptable to any situati on and any machine.

www.cucchi-blt.com

Naturally, we’re delighted. The awards recognise the best smaller scale businesses in the area and seek out organizati ons whose performance has excelled despite the day-to-day realiti es of the economic situati on. The awards celebrate those who don’t accept tough ti mes as a reason to hold back, but rather see them as a challenge to be overcome.

The way we see it, it’s about doing your best in every circumstance. Excepti onal customer service, to us, isn’t something you switch off and on—it should be there all the ti me. Likewise, quality isn’t opti onal, it’s essenti al. These are just two examples of our approach, but this commitment to high standards is there in everything we do.

When you refuse to compromise and keep on doing the right thing, you build great customer relati onships and you start to build trust. We won’t recommend an unsuitable machine to a customer just to make a sale because we know that, long-term, that’s a road to ruin. Instead, we’ll get to know the customer, his needs and aspirati ons. Only then can we be sure we’re supplying the right machine, service and support. Our

products are a considerable investment for most of our customers. They’re oft en smaller businesses, working hard to remain producti ve and competi ti ve against cheap imports. If we get our job right, we don’t just build trust with one customer, we help to support the component industry, the employees within it, their families and hence the wider community.

We’re honoured to receive this award because we respect the criteria on which it’s judged. The input from third parti es also means a lot to us. It’s nice to be known for what we do well. But we haven’t done what we do simply to win an award. We’ve done it because it’s the right thing and because that’s the kind of people we are. We’re just doing our job.

Big thanks to the folks at the Best of Lake in the Hills. We appreciate the award and we’ll display it with pride.

Thanks, we’re just doing what we do bestA few days ago, we learned that we’ve received the Best of Lake in the Hills Award in the Industrial Category.

Did you know? Our Cucchi bar loader fi ts on all types of manufacturers multi -spindle lathes?
