When Paul writes to the Corinthian church, he speaks of a great variety of spiritual gifts. Even more impor-
tantly, however, Paul says that the gifts conferred by the Holy Spirit are conferred to each person. No one is
left out. The gifts are given to each, not just to some. Each person individually has something special that
God has given to them for the sake of the world.
Recently I’ve had the honor of presiding over baptisms and affirmations of baptism. In those rites there is a
prayer that begins, “Stir up in name the gift of your Holy Spirit…” In this prayer we are calling attention to
the fact that the gifts of the Holy Spirit are already there, they just need stirred up! This prayer isn’t for some
vague or general gift, but trusts that God has put in each person a specific power or capacity that is peculiar
and original to that individual.
God has given each one of us gifts in the Spirit, and they have been given for a purpose. Each year around
this time, as the days grow short and a new year begins to beckon, we invite you to consider again how God
has gifted you. As a congregation, it’s a time of discernment as we prepare for the next year and recommit
to use our God-given gifts together for God’s purposes. This month, and in particular on November 18th &
19th, you are invited to recommit your gifts of time, talent, and treasure for the coming year. No gift is too
small that God cannot work with it.

out the world. We are envisioning and re-visioning where God is calling us to in these places, whether it’s
through our top-in-the-nation commitment to global mission, or through our award-winning community
health initiative, or through our engaging opportunities for all ages to learn and grow as disciples, or through

A Message from South AfricaA Message from South AfricaA Message from South AfricaA Message from South Africa Dear friends,
Recently I travelled to Chimoio in central Mozambique with six members of Our Saviours Lutheran Church
(Naperville, IL) to visit congregations and the Vida Humana project of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in
Mozambique (ELCM).
Vida Humana is a project of the ELCM which was started in Chimoio in 2005 to assist people in the com-
munity living with HIV & AIDS. Thirteen volunteer activists or advocates who are also members of the Lu-
theran congregation in Chimoio do regular home visits to encourage and assist those who are on Antiretro-
viral (ARV) treatment, organize transportation to the hospital when needed and oversee distribution of e-pap, a concentrated nutritious food supplement.
During our stay we also travelled in a small bus to
visit the Martin Luther Clinic in the rural community
of Munene and then to the nearby town of Catandica
140 km north of Chimoio. We were taken on a short
tour of the clinic, the house for expectant mothers
and the nurses’ house. The clinic was built with the
support of ELCA World Hunger funds. The govern-
ment provides for two nurses and medicine. After
the visit to the clinic members of the local Lutheran
congregation at Munene welcomed the visitors with
singing and dancing and served a meal in the church
building.
Thank you for your prayers, support and participation in God’s mission locally and globally.
Yours faithfully, Rev. Dr. Philip Knutson, ELCA Global Mission Regional Representative, Southern Africa

VEAP NEWSVEAP NEWSVEAP NEWSVEAP NEWS Since 2008 suburban poverty has increased by 53%. In response to this VEAP decided to evaluate it’s
program to best meet the needs of the population it serves. It has decided to concentrate more on food
and housing programs. VEAP can feed one person for a week for $1.50. Each dollar donated to VEAP can
purchase $10 worth of food. The ride home program ride home program ride home program ride home program is also expanding as half of those clients getting
food are seniors who need the transportation. There will be NO Christmas gift program this year as other
agencies serve this need and VEAP feels the food program is more necessary and helpful. Please continue
to bring food and remember to donate funds to the food program as it can go a long way to help people.

DOING OUR PART TO END HUNGERDOING OUR PART TO END HUNGERDOING OUR PART TO END HUNGERDOING OUR PART TO END HUNGER Once poor and a domestic worker outside her country Mercedita Cubar today is a leader among Filipino
farmers. She is helping others grow more food for their children and communities, thanks to a World
Bank program supported through funding from the U.S. government.
Here in the U.S., Dawn Pierce was able to put her life back together after losing her job. With SNAP
(formerly food stamps), she was able to buy groceries for herself and her son while she looked for another
job. Now she's a licensed practical nurse who cares for senior citizens in seven assisted living facilities in
Boise, Idaho.
These two women were able to succeed, in large part, because people in churches around the United
States took a few minutes to write their members of Congress. Their letters urged Congress to adopt
and fund programs that have helped people move out of poverty and feed their families. These hunger-
fighting programs save money in the long run, and they reduce conflicts and instability caused by hunger
and poverty.
As we rejoice in Christ's abundant grace in our lives, we are called to share in God's vision of a world
where all people "will hunger no more" (Rev. 7:16).

Give the Gift of Health Care DirectivesGive the Gift of Health Care DirectivesGive the Gift of Health Care DirectivesGive the Gift of Health Care Directives The holidays are approaching. The possibility of
visiting with your family members tends to go
along with this special season. This makes a
great time to look at your Health Care Direc-
tives. Have you discussed your wishes with your
family? Do you have someone assigned to be
your health care advocate? If you should ever
be unable to speak for yourself, what do you
want done? Everyone over the age of 18 should
have a health care directive. It is one of the best
gifts you can give your family. These decisions,
under stressful situations, can tear families
apart. If you want a way to help discuss the
topic with your family, I have a great card game
to play called “The Go Wish Game”. The game
is located in the library along with our health
care directive packets. If you have any questions
on how to fill out your health care directive, feel
free to call or meet with me.

As I was contemplating writing this article, my mind went to the Thanksgiving holiday, and how important the attitudes of “thanks” and “gratitude” should be in our lives…and not just during the month of Novem-ber. I began to wonder what the Bible tells us about thanks in our daily lives and came across an article by Jeffrey Kranz, Thankfulness in the Bible: 17 Passages About Giving ThanksThankfulness in the Bible: 17 Passages About Giving ThanksThankfulness in the Bible: 17 Passages About Giving ThanksThankfulness in the Bible: 17 Passages About Giving Thanks.
Mr. Kranz ends the article with the following list: 4 things the bible tells us to be thankful for: 1. Thank1. Thank1. Thank1. Thank God for his goodnessGod for his goodnessGod for his goodnessGod for his goodness He’s good, and he’s done great things for his people. The writer of Psalm 136 hits this hard: Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good. His love endures forever. (Ps 136:1) That’s the most famous call to thank God for his goodness but it’s a very common theme in the Old Tes-tament. Psalms 106, 107, and 108 open with the same line. When David appoints Asaph over the musi-cians at the tabernacle, they thank God for his goodness and everlasting loving kindness. The same thing happens when Zerubabbel lays the foundations of the second temple (1 Chr 16:34; Ezra 3:11). Which brings us to our second thing to thank God for: 2. Thank God for his loving kindness2. Thank God for his loving kindness2. Thank God for his loving kindness2. Thank God for his loving kindness See above! 3. Thank God for your local church3. Thank God for your local church3. Thank God for your local church3. Thank God for your local church Paul tells the Colossians to act toward one another in love and unity. Because Jesus has established peace, and because we are all part of Christ’s body, we should be at peace with one another. Paul encour-ages his readers to sing to God from a heart of gratitude, and to do everything while giving thanks to God. Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, since as members of one body you were called to peace. And be thankful. Let the message of Christ dwell among you richly as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom through psalms, hymns, and songs from the Spirit, singing to God with gratitude in your hearts. And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him. (Col 3:15–17) 4. Thank God for everything4. Thank God for everything4. Thank God for everything4. Thank God for everything Thanks, Paul. Just in case we were getting choosey about what to give thanks for . . . Sing and make music from your heart to the Lord, always giving thanks to God the Father for everything, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ. (Eph 5:19–20) And I should also note that Paul tells the Thessalonian church to thank God in all circumstances. (Even though they were being persecuted for their faith.)
And here’s some more very good news: our CTKB library contains many Bible versions, including chil-dren’s and youth, for your use. So, during this month of November, and any time during the year when you need a reminder or a different perspective, it’s easy to peruse our various translations and remember what the Bible tells us about giving thanks.
Happy Thanksgiving from the CTKB Library Team. Kay Marotz, for the Library Team

Be Careful then how you live. . . . as you sing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs among yourselves, singing an making melody to the Lord in your hearts, giving thanks to God the Father at all times and for everything in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ. Ephesians 5:15a, 19-20
Thank you. I’ve been thinking lately about how important those two words are for me. I also tend to forget
how powerful those two words are. Honestly, looking a clerk, co-worker, or server in the eye and saying a
heartfelt “thank you” transforms their countenance. It acknowledges them as a human, it seems it can, at
least occasionally, re-direct someone’s day.
I’m pleased that my parents taught me to say thank you. But, my recent thinking has brought something
else to mind. Saying thank you changes me. It seems I’m always given the opportunity for gratitude or
greed. I’m invited to gratitude, the heartfelt expression of thanks that acknowledges all I have been given,
or to greed – the just as deeply felt attitude that I don’t have enough. Gratitude becomes expansive –
bearing witness to the bounty of God’s magnificent creation. Greed becomes exclusive, living into an atti-
tude of scarcity.
I wonder if, on some level, the Pilgrims understood all of this on that first Thanksgiving. They could have
kept to themselves. Certainly none of us would have blamed them for feeling sorry for themselves. They
had endured hardships to come to this continent, and were faced with even more hardship. The winter was
cold, there were new diseases, they had left everything behind. Yet, those who survived chose to give
thanks. It would have been easy to focus on the hardship, but instead they gave thanks for what they had.
It is so easy for me to focus on the hardship, to think I live in scarcity, and to live into greed. It is easy to
notice the shorter days and forget the beautiful leaves. It is easy to remember those I’ve lost, and forget
those I still have. It is easy to wish I had a bigger house, a new car, or a fancy hot tub instead of remem-
bering I have a house, I have a car, and I can go to the Y to use a hot tub (and I don’t even have to clean
it!). Greed says I need mine, and thanks says we have ours.
So this Thanksgiving, I pray that I pay attention to the letter to the Ephesians, and give thanks. Not only at
a table laden with turkey and surrounded by friends, but every day, seeing the bounty and beauty of God’s
creation, for in gratitude, I also find joy.
Thank you, and happy Thanksgiving,
John Salveson

With the help of the ELCA and their “Good Gifts” program – the youth & children’s
programs will be giving their offering gift to purchase CHICKS for those in need.
These chicks will give those who are in need EGGS that will be used to make nour-
ishing meals. Every time we raise $10 – someone, a family or a community will
receive 10 chicks. The youth and children will celebrate together at the end of the
youth/Sunday school year with the total of what our wonderful gift were able to
give to others. We will work together to help those in need while praising God each Sunday.

Meet Our New Interim CYF Director, Cory Jones!Meet Our New Interim CYF Director, Cory Jones!Meet Our New Interim CYF Director, Cory Jones!Meet Our New Interim CYF Director, Cory Jones! I was born in Iowa but raised in Wisconsin. I spent my childhood in the towns of Platteville and Portage,
WI. I attended St. Cloud State University and graduated with a degree in Mass Communication and with a
fiancé. We were married in 2003 and have called Minnesota home since. My wife, Cindy and our three
kids - Malachi (Cai), Colette (Coley) and Cadence (Cade) live in White Bear Lake, MN. However, no matter
where I call home my heart will always belong to the Green Bay Packers!
I began my professional ministry to students and families in 2007. I have my M.A. in Theological Studies
from Bethel Theological Seminary. I have served as a Student Ministries Pastor in two churches and as the
Area Director of YoungLife para-church ministry in White Bear Lake and Mahtomedi, MN.
Now, as an InterServe Ministry Associate/Consultant it’s my passion and privilege to help churches dream,
design and implement ministry strategies to maximize a church’s reach and impact on students and fami-
lies in their communities. I love the global, collective Church! I love the fact that I’ve been called to serve,
teach and share the transformational love and hope of Jesus through the vehicle of His Church.
I’m excited to be at Christ the King for this season of ministry and look forward to serving & loving Jesus here with you all!
