Global oil field services firms are suffering

1998 Crash
2008 Crash
2001 Crash
2014 Crash
As of Sept
2015
Rig count declining again with recent downward trends in oil prices
North American land: U.S. land activity
continues to move lower as hedges roll-off and
liquidity tightens.
International land: Q3 avg. international rig
count -3% q/q and -16% y/y, with all regions
(except Middle East) now down ~15+% y/y. But
Saudi Arabia land rig count set a new all-time
high (+8 rigs m/m to 106 rigs).
Offshore rig market: – Offshore rig activity still
trickling lower as floaters drilling flat w/w (4-wk -
13) while jackups -2 (4-wk -8).
Jackup market regional activity trends that
we have seen over past few weeks continue to
play out as strength in the ME was not enough to
offset weakness in SE Asia and NW Europe.
Most deep water drillers anticipate declines into 2017

Deepwater segment (number of active rigs)
“We all know our industry is cyclical.
But as we have been saying for a
considerable period of time, this will be
a long and a hard downturn, the likes
of which we have not seen for
decades…. The recovery in
As older rigs leave market, fleet high-grading and new builds will lead to
growing sophistication in communications requirements
“Over the past 12 months, we've taken
delivery of four newbuild rigs, we have
sold six rigs, and placed another six
rigs into held for sale, removing them
deepwater drilling remains well over the horizon and any
green shoots that would indicate that the market is
turning are a very long way out.”
from our go-forward fleet. This is part of a deliberate
strategy to high-grade our fleet as we navigate the
downturn.”

Deep water communications requirements
driving three primary trends
Mobility

• High-touch services:
Customers increasingly
willing to trade network
control for simplicity and
lower costs
• Bandwidth: Demand growth
continues in deep water
• Mobility: Growing
requirement as long-term
contracts are broken by
operators, extensions
increasingly shorter-term
Critical and growing needs across all lines of business
driving customer segmentation
• End-to-end network
management differentiates,
especially as mobility
increases as drillers chase
work and day rates
• Raises technical
requirements and enables
differentiation through
network solutions and tech
• Global reach becomes
more important which drives
the need for more integrated
solutions

Harris CapRock One: Global managed
communications in remote environments
• HCOne is a set of hardware, software, and
reoccurring services bundled together as
ONE product
• HCOne automatically selects the best
communications route for information
using Harris’ proprietary equipment and
software
• HCOne improves reliability of service
compared to other services through high
levels of redundancy and the ability to use
multiple transports
• Being fully automated, and with no moving
parts to change frequencies from C, Ku, or
Ka, HCOne is ideally suited for mobility
applications
Harris CapRock One is a managed communications services support by
the global scale of Harris CapRock

* OBM and wireless equipment omitted for clarity.
Up to 7 modems can be
supported (limit being number of
Modem Rx ports).
Modems currently supported:
iDirect, Comtech and Viasat
Up to 8 antennas can be supported.
Anticipated installations would range between
1-4 antennas, depending on site obstruction
and service requirements.

Intelligent controller device: Overview
The Intelligent Controller Device’s (ICD) primary building blocks:
1. Geographical awareness of the connectivity options, technology type, and available resources in a
given location (i.e. satellite or wireless)
2. Rules based decision making around the location, network parameters at the location, and real time
performance of the available network options with ability to automatically configure the equipment to
best suit the location and demands of the site (i.e. automatically point the antenna, change
frequency band, and configure the modem).
3. End-to-end networking solution to manage the delivery of the traffic across the various connectivity
options
Physically, the ICD sits at the transition
point between the client interface and the
WAN services.
Logically, the ICD sits at the transition point
between layers 2 and 3 in the seven layer
ISO stack.

Application Note
Challenge:
• 100% availability is so important that
some clients install full vessel duplication
IT Data Center systems onboard their
vessels including and also station
additional personnel to operate &
maintain them, Data integrity and
availability is critical to the operational
environment.
Solution:
• With Harris CapRock One you can
maintain a robust connection all the time
thanks to the automatic routing and
switching traffic across the best available
network at the time for the application.
Customer Advantage:
• No need for significant capital expenditure on
redundant systems.
• Increased Remote operations, management
and control capability.
• Reduction in onboard personnel .
• Improved safety with fewer personnel in
harm’s way.

Application Note
Challenge:
• For highly mobile vessels that have new
clients/operators coming onboard, move
between global operational locations or
change between a variety of satellite bands
need to have people mobilized to the vessel
to manually reconfigure their communications
systems causing delays and raising OPEX
costs
Solution:
• With Harris CapRock One contiguous
multiband roaming features we can move
location without delay while seamlessly
moving between required bands without
losing connectivity
Key points:
• Faster mobility reducing between job time &
increasing ability to react to market need
• Reduced manual Intervention lowers OPEX
logistics costs (transportation / bed space)
• Reduced Intervention Fault Risk
Customer Advantage:
• With typical volume of location / frequency
changes Harris CapRock One Users could
add 10’s of millions to their bottom line in
faster higher mobility capabilities, days of
saved transit preparation time & reduced
manual intervention OPEX on every Harris
CapRock One enabled vessel per year
