PRESIDENT’S VIEW

A Winning Team

HOW MANY TIMES have you heard the comment, “Behind every good man is a good woman!” Successful organizations or associations are the same when it comes to active members and the effective use of its committees. Quoting Dr. Gibb, “An association is a group of people with common interests that organize to accomplish together what they cannot do as individuals.” So, behind every good association is an active membership.

How many workshops or group functions have we been involved with where 10 percent of the people do 90 percent of the work? I couldn’t even begin to tell you how many of those I’ve been involved with. The easiest form of involvement requires no monetary investment. It requires a little time and a voice.

State associations and committees are just as important as national committees. State associations provide input to national committees and the national committees bring those recommendations to the AGA Board of Directors. It is then the Board’s responsibility to act on those recommendations.

Members provide the foundation in which an organization is built. Effective organizations take those members and build a structure that promotes participation and allows everyone to feel like they are included. It’s a lot like successful sports teams.

You don’t need the best athletes to win…you just need a good team. Teams succeed when all members work towards the same goal. A couple good examples are the 1987 and 1991 Minnesota Twins. Over half the teams in professional baseball spend more money on their rosters than the Minnesota Twins. Another example is

the 1980 U.S. Hockey team that beat the Russians for the Gold Medal at the Olympics. It is an incredible testament to desire and team work! I guess the moral of this story is…it takes a total team effort to win a World Series or a Gold Medal.

Here is a means to be a part of the AGA team. The AGA Board

of Directors has accepted a proposal from the AGA staff to have our committee meetings via web-meeting and teleconference prior to the National Western Stock Show. We are taking this approach for several reasons.

First and foremost, this should allow more input from more members. Anyone that has an interest in voicing an opinion on future direction or any concerns regarding current policy and practices has an avenue to participate.

Holding the committee meetings before convention allows members to focus on the purpose of our committees – making policy recommendations to the Board of Directors. This then allows time during convention to focus on member communication and discussion on specific topics.

Third, this change creates more opportunity to network and socialize with fellow breeders.

In the interest of generating more member participation we need to find effective ways for more involvement. I encourage everyone to give it a try.

We are at a crossroads in our industry. The commercial cattlemen need and want Continental cattle to compliment the English cattle. Not all Continental breed associations are going to last. Success does not come easy. I didn’t for the Minnesota Twins, it didn’t for the 1980 U.S. Hockey team and it won’t for us. But it sure is fun when it all pays off!

I am inviting each and every member to participate in at least one committee web-meeting meeting. As a team we can make Gelbvieh cattle the champions of the Continental Race. FFF

The easiest way to get involved in the American Gelbvieh Association is to be a part of the committee process; and then participate! It’s one thing to be part of a group; it’s a whole different thing to be active in the group. By Rob Arnold

BREED PROMOTION MINUTE

Manage What You Can

THE BLIZZARD THAT hit in the High Plains on October 4, 2013 is gut-wrenching. The total death loss of livestock will take months to tally and probably never be totally known. Early estimates vary at this time but are said to be at least 75,000 head of livestock. Some producers lost the majority of their herds. The after effects in loss from abortion by bred females will add to the economic impact.

It is a grim reminder that in what it takes producers years to build Mother Nature can take away in two days. It is out of our control. It’s a feeling of total helplessness for those producers and hard for others to fully comprehend.

As producers deal with the after effects of this tragedy, one thinks about the trials that livestock producers endure. Drought, floods, and blizzards are very difficult if not impossible to pre-plan and manage. When they occur at catastrophic and record setting levels producers take the punch and come back stronger and wiser.

We are fortunate that we do have control over many things in the livestock business. Producers make managerial decisions daily that have

a direct effect on the product they produce and how they do it. The majority of our decisions can be managed and are within our control.

Based on individual environment restraints and market targets, the decision of which genetics to add is not the same for everyone. Producers have varying needs in the genetics they select. This isn’t a bad thing but rather shows that they are managing their total ranch resources and market.

There are certain traits that are, or should be managed and selected for in any environment. Reproduction continues to be the number one trait that has a direct and lasting effect on the profitability of any cow-calf operation. Cows that breed and calve in a short calving interval always are more profitable than those in a herd that do not. Although not highly heritable, good cowmen will tell you that reproduction can be managed and selected for, and can show vast improvements over time. The ability of heifers to reach puberty, get bred and to continue to rebreed year after year is the number one priority for any good cow-calf program. It’s number one for increased profitability.

In making management decisions producers determine what breed or breeds are going to be used in their breeding program. Some will make this decision based on what is the “breed of the month” rather than what breeds actually have been proven to add the most profitability to their operation for the long haul.

It has been proven with Meat Animal Research Center data that when compared to other breeds Gelbvieh heifers reach puberty earlier. It has been proven that Gelbvieh cows wean more pounds of calf per cow exposed. It has been proven in research conducted at Colorado State University that Gelbvieh cows have more stayability with a higher conception rate when compared to other breeds. The best testimonial may very well be that when commercial producers are asked why they use Gelbvieh in their breeding programs, the most often response is, “Because they make good cows.”

With all that said shouldn’t one “manage” to have Gelbvieh incorporated into their breeding program? You do have control and can manage making Gelbvieh part of your breeding program. It is the right decision based on documented third-party research and producer testimonials. There are enough other things that are out of your control, manage the reproductive efficiency of your cow herd with genetics.. FFF

Arguably, the most significant decision cow-calf producers make is selecting the genetics introduced into the cow herd. This is a decision producers have direct control over. By Frank Padilla

Gelbvieh DeparturesCharles Roger Clark was called

home to Heaven suddenly while working on the ranch that he loved on October 12, 2013.

Charlie was born November 18, 1936, in Lemmon to Avery and Genevieve (Schmidt) Clark. He was the youngest of their six children. On June 1, 1954, Charlie married his high school sweetheart, Peggy Cazer at Spencer Memorial Church in Lemmon. They lived their first few years on the homestead and then purchased their own ranch from Tom Lyman along the Grand River where they proudly raised cattle and kids. Charles and Peggy celebrated 59 years of marriage together this year.

Charlie was a cowboy and a rancher to the core. He loved the land and the animals under his care. An avid cowboy poet and storyteller, he enjoyed sharing memories of the good ole days with family and friends.

Throughout the 70s and 80s, he and Peggy raised registered Gelbvieh cattle and Charlie served on the national Board of Directors of the American Gelbvieh Association for six years and as president in 1983. His knowledge was sought as a judge for national shows at the NILE, Kansas City and Manitoba.

Keeping him in their fondest memories are his wife, Peggy; his children and their spouses; his siblings and siblings-in-law; and numerous nieces and nephews.

RUMINANT NUTRITION

How a Protein Supplementation Program can Help Winter Range Cattle on Low-Quality Forage

MANAGEMENT AND SUPPLEMENTATION of low-quality forages is critical because voluntary intake is normally not adequate to meet cattle’s nutrient requirements; due to the low crude protein content (< 7 percent CP), and high fiber content of low-quality forage. This limitation of nutrient intake can negatively affect digestibility and ultimately, overall cattle performance.

In addition to forage quality declines and roughage intake being less than ideal, spring calving cow herds are entering their third trimester, which is when 75-80 percent of calf development occurs. It is during this term that a cow’s nutritional requirements are rising, and will continue to their highest level during peak lactation. Thus, protein, energy, and mineral and vitamin supplementation is critical, to maintain or hopefully increase the plane of nutrition so the cow can retain her body condition for lactation and rebreeding purposes. If a cow’s body condition suffers, it becomes much more difficult to bring her back to breeding condition while she is lactating, as

nutrient requirements are at their highest.

Supplementing protein can also greatly assist ruminants in their ability to function at optimal levels when fed low-quality forages. Cattle can increase the use of low-quality forage, because supplemental protein provides the ruminally available nitrogen that the rumen microbe populations require. The way protein supplementation benefits the microbes is shown in Figure 1. In essence, microbial growth and fermentative activity increases, which leads to increased voluntary forage intake and energy status, and ultimately, animal performance. Therefore, if we “feed the bugs” and meet their requirements, we have an excellent chance to meet the animal’s requirements.

Over the years, producers have supplemented protein by using a number of different options. Choosing which supplementation product to use can depend on your type of operation, animal requirements, personal preferences, and availability of resources. Table 1

summarizes some options including the advantages and disadvantages to be considered when choosing a supplementation program.

One of the most cost effective and reliable methods for cattlemen to provide protein is through the use of non-protein nitrogen or “NPN”. Commonly found in the form of urea, NPN supplements are very beneficial for grazing cattle because they provide fiber-fermenting bacteria with a source of readily available nitrogen; which leads to the improved utilization of low-quality forage. However, in the past, feeding urea resulted in its rapid break-down to ammonia, which caused some toxicity issues. Today’s products utilize new technologies including the recent development of methods to “slow release” the nitrogen in NPN, resulting in much safer products. Calcium-bound urea (Ruma-Pro®) and phosphorous-bound urea available in the market place today, are examples of these technological developments, and when formulated in combination with readily available carbohydrates found in liquid supplements, allows for greater use of the nitrogen by the “rumen bugs,” and improves the overall effectiveness of supplementation.

To supply additional nutrients to cattle, many producers readily employ self-fed or free-choice liquid supplementation programs. Such programs have proven to be an efficient and economical approach for the producer to supply not only protein and energy

Unlike pork and poultry, beef cattle have a unique ability to convert otherwise unusable fibrous materials into palatable, high quality protein products for human consumption. Because of seasonality and forage availability this time of year, this conversion process becomes more challenging due to most typical grazing situations involving lower quality forages such as stored hay, straw, or crop residues. By Courtney Verzosa

to their cattle, but also well-formulated vitamin and mineral packages. Combining these nutrients allows for nutritional deficiencies and imbalances to be addressed with a single application, which ultimately serves to lower production cost through decreased labor and equipment expenses, and better consumption control. Liquids also have been useful in

TMR type rations, as they increase palatability, and decreases dust, waste, and the sorting of feed ration ingredients by cattle.

It is essential to remember when you are exploring the options of protein supplementation programs, to have your forage properly tested. Evaluating the protein and energy of your existing

forage is an important first step in identifying the nutritional “gaps” that can be filled with a targeted supplementation program. Once you know what you have to work with, you can begin to develop a supplementation program that is sure to be efficient and economical, in addition to improving the use and intake of your winter forage supply. EXECUTIVE’S VIEW

Improving on Tradition

AMERICAN GELBVIEH ASSOCIATION Annual Conventions have historically been filled with great enthusiasm and excitement as we honor those who have made extraordinary contributions to the AGA and Gelbvieh cattle, meet old friends, make new friends, discuss the past year and unveil plans for the next year. I distinctly remember my first convention 22 years ago and how impressed I was with the atmosphere and dedication of all participants. It was truly an inspiring event.

One major change for 2014 will be the timing of the committee meetings.

Since the beginning, committee participation has been a crucial core value of the American Gelbvieh Association. Over the decades, AGA committee members have made hundreds of recommendations to the AGA Board of Directors, and many, albeit not all, have become AGA policy.

The open debate during committee meetings provides a terrific opportunity for AGA members to express their opinions and take part in setting direction for the AGA.

Last year, the Rules and Bylaws committee recommended a change in our Bylaws granting voting privileges to all AGA members attending committee meetings. While there are still core committee members, the rule change officially makes our committee meetings more inclusive.

If you’ve been on the AGA website or read the eNews, you know that the opportunity for even more committee participation was approved by the AGA Board of

Directors during their August meeting. All eight AGA committees will meet via web or teleconference during the second and third weeks of December. Historically, committees have used teleconferences to prepare for their convention meetings and conduct other business. However, this will be a first for the official annual committee meetings.

As fun and informative as AGA conventions are, some folks are just unable to attend for a variety of reasons, often because someone must stay home and do the chores while mom and dad have fun at the convention. This December, anyone can participate in the committee meetings whether you plan to make the trek to Denver or not.

A complete list of the committee meeting dates and times can be found on the AGA website, as well as on page 45 of this issue. So please mark them on your calendar. Also coming soon will be information on how to dial into the web-meetings.

The obvious question is, “What are we going to do with the extra time not used by the committees?” For one, we’ve been able to condense the time frame somewhat. But more importantly, in response to member comments, more time will be committed to member communication and interaction, and a special guest speaker. Three outstanding member communication sessions are planned, followed by the evening “Bull Pen” session where participants can ask more questions of the speakers or any of the AGA Board and staff.

Yes, there are risks with changing the long-standing tradition of committees meetings at the annual convention, and the AGA Board is to be commended for taking steps to enhance member involvement. Please participate in the December committee meetings and we’ll see you in Denver. FFF

With much talk throughout the beef industry about herd expansion, plus the many new AGA initiatives that will be launched next year, the 2014 AGA Annual Convention promises to be one of the best in recent memory. By Jim Gibb

JUNIOR NEWS

Rippe Gelbvieh Donates Watchman Daughter for AGJA Raffle

ONE OF THE largest fundraising efforts for the American Gelbvieh Junior Association (AGJA) is the annual Donation Heifer project. AGJA members sell raffle tickets on the heifer at $10 each or six tickets for $50. Bulk raffle tickets can also be purchased through the lively auction held during the Awards Presentation and Bull Futurity Social Saturday night of the AGA Annual Convention. All proceeds from this project directly benefit the AGJA and provide funds for the annual Junior Classic and the regional shows.

Rippe Gelbvieh, Duane, Brenda, Dustin and Karla Rippe of Hubbel, Neb., have once again generously donated this year’s heifer. Rippe Gelbvieh is built around moderate framed, functional females selected for a balance of traits. Rippe Gelbvieh collects ultrasound and actual carcass data from approximately 90 percent of the calves born each year.

The 2014 Donation Heifer is DBRG Ms Watchman 303A (AMGV1256505), a 50 percent Balancer® heifer

born January 13, 2013. She is the product of the mating between Lazy TV Watchman W021 and Ms Buddy Boy 1173Y. She combines outstanding pedigree and EPDs to offer calving ease, growth and carcass to any program. The only way to own this exciting young female is by purchasing a raffle ticket. AGJA members will be selling tickets during the 2014 AGA Annual Convention and NWSS, as well as during the time leading up to convention.

The drawing is held prior the National Gelbvieh and Balancer® Sale on Sunday, January 12 at 1:00 p.m. at the Livestock Center Auction Arena in the Yards at the National Western Stock Show. The winner need not be present.

The success of the donation heifer depends largely on AGJA members who work diligently to sell tickets prior to the drawing. AGJA recognizes the top ticket salesperson during the awards banquet at the AGJA Junior Classic. FFF

THE AMERICAN GELBVIEH ASSOCIATION CAPTURES THE POWER OF GENOMICSThe Gelbvieh Genomic Profiles – powered by GeneSeek – are now available from the American Gelbvieh Association through its partnership with GeneSeek, a Neogen company.

• Confidence: The Gelbvieh genomic profiles were developed using the most powerful genomic tools available, and the GeneSeek GGP-HD and GGP-LD are the new standard for cattle genetic testing.

• Accuracy: The GeneSeek GGP-HD features nearly 78,000 SNPs for highly accurate genomic-enhanced expected progeny differences (GE-EPDs) for AI sire, Donor dams and seedstock natural service sires. The GeneSeek GGP-LD features nearly 20,000 markers for GE-EPDs for screening bull sale and replacement heifer candidates. Don’t settle for anything less than the best.

• Value: Why wait two or more years and spend precious resources to prove the value of a bull or female? Time is money, and genomics allow you to make a decision today on the value of that animal.

• Simplicity: Using a single DNA sample you can receive not only a genomic profle, but also parentage, genetic abnormalities, coat color and horned/polled status for the best value.

To begin using the power of this new technology, please contact the American Gelbvieh Association at 303/465-2333.

ANNUALLY, THE AMERICAN Gelbvieh Association honors females in their Herdbook that exhibit consistent maternal efficiency through the Dam of Merit and Dam of Distinction program. The AGA credits its members who continue to place selection emphasis on the maternal traits of the breed by being owners or breeders of these outstanding Gelbvieh and Balancer® females.

Of the 39,516 active cows in the AGA Herdbook, only 3.6 percent qualify for Dam of Merit. Only 0.8 percent of all active cows qualify for the Dam of Distinction honors.

“The Gelbvieh breed has long had the earned reputation of possessing functional, hard-working females with the ability to breed at a young age, rebreed for the second calf and wean one in that would push down hard on the scale,” comments the American Gelbvieh Association’s Frank Padilla. “The females that qualified for the Dam of Merit and Dam of Distinction program did not achieve such a level of productivity by happenstance. Breeders placed selection pressure on these traits in the development of females that would perform at a level that surpasses others.”

The following is the top ten ranking of states for the combined total of Dams of Merit and Dams of Distinction. Rank State Total 1. Kansas 539 2. South Dakota 467 3. Nebraska 431 4. North Dakota 362 5. Missouri 265 6. Montana 179 7. Arizona 137 8. Iowa 128 9. Colorado 117 10. Minnesota 107

In order for a female to qualify as a Dam of Merit/Distinction the following must occur: 1) All data must be submitted to the AGA office by August 1, 2013; 2) A Dam of Merit must have produced at least three calves and a Dam of Distinction must have produced a minimum of eight calves; 3) Age at first calving must not exceed 25 months; 4) Produce a calf that was born between January 1, 2011 and March 1, 2012; 5) Possess a minimum average weaning weight ratio of 101 for all calves; 6) Maintain a regular calving interval.

VIEW OF THE NUMBERS

AGA Resources Help Members Manage Genetic Conditions

THE FIVE GENETIC conditions that breeders should be aware of are: Arthrogryposis Multiplex (AM), Nueropathic Hydrocephalus (NH), Osteopetrosis (OS), Contractural Arachnodactyly (CA) and Developmental Duplication (DD). DNA tests have been developed and are available for each of these tests. Recent action by the AGA Board of Directors has resulted in the following key points regarding genetic conditions:

• New AI sire and Donor dams as of August 16, 2013 will be required to be tested for AM, NH, OS, CA and DD. There is no other mandatory testing requirement for any other AMGV animals for registration purposes.

• Any animal regardless of genetic condition status can be recorded and registered in the AGA Herdbook.

• Animals will be designated with a “P” (examples: AMP, NHP, OSP, CAP, DDP) which indicates potential carrier, if there is an ancestor in the animal’s pedigree that has been tested as a carrier or as affected with a specific defect.

• Genetic condition status will be displayed on AGA Animal Search page and printed on performance pedigrees and registration certificates.

• Genetic condition status information should be included with any animal offered for sale.

To better assist members manage genetic conditions the AGA has launched an update to

the Animal Search and the Member Online Registry. Results from DNA testing will now be displayed with the animal’s pedigree and EPD information. The results that are displayed include: coat color, horned/polled, diluter,

Over the last couple of months, American Gelbvieh Association members have heard a great deal about genetic conditions. Testing to date has shown the occurrence of known genetic conditions is at a very low frequency. Through DNA testing, and the updated animal registry system, members can easily manage genetic conditions. By Susan Willmon

An example of how DNA testing results will be displayed on the Animal Search and the Member Online Registry

xxF Determined free of condition by DNA test

xxCDetermined to be a carrier by DNA test or is a confirmed parent of an affected progeny

xxADetermined to be affected by the condition by a DNA test

xxPHas a carrier ancestor in its pedigree without an intervening tested free animal.

BVD-PI, Tenderness, Docility, AM, NA, CA, OS, and DD. In addition, an option has been added to the My Herd menu, on the Online Member Registry, that shows the genetic condition status of all animals from a specified birth year.

On an animal’s pedigree, genetic condition status will be listed for animals within the pedigree. Behind each animal’s name in the pedigree

AGA Board Approves Genetic Conditions Testing Policy

The American Gelbvieh Association Board of Directors has adopted a new genetic conditions testing policy. The complete document containing all policy information can be found on the Genetic Conditions Information page under the Education Center tab at www.gelbvieh.org. The core genetic conditions testing policy, effective October 9, 2013, is as follows:

1. All new AI sires and donor females must be tested for AM, NH, CA, DD and OS at the owners expense in order to register progeny.

2. The top 50 sires each year (that have not been previously tested) will be tested for AM, NH, CA, DD and OS at AGA’s expense.

3. Other than points one and two above, there is no additional mandatory testing.

4. On all pedigrees, the animal’s genetic condition status will be designated.

will be the status codes as applicable for each condition.

As members review the animals in their own herds they may come across animals that may have incomplete data. These animals may have been tested outside the AGA process and the results had

not been forwarded to the AGA for inclusion in the registry database. Contact the office for information on how to forward those results for addition to the database. FFF

MANAGEMENT

Are You a Cattle Manager or a Cost Manager?

“THIRTY YEARS AGO, input costs were relatively low and cattle producers concentrated on improving reproduction rates and weaning weight,” said Tom Troxel, associate head-Animal Science, for the University of Arkansas System Division of Agriculture. “Times have changed.”

Even though cattle prices have risen, so have the costs of just about everything that goes into a cattle

operation.“In other

words, cattle producers must become cost managers,”

he said. “High reproduction rates and weaning weights are still important; but with the high cost of doing business and high equipment costs, managing those input costs probably has more to do with profitability than managing reproduction rates and weaning weights alone.”

Cost of raising a cowA manager needs to know

production costs. The 300 Day Grazing program conducted at the Livestock and Forestry Research Station at Batesville keeps production and financial records on a 40 head cow/calf operation. For the past year, production cost alone was $665 per cow, excluding labor, farm insurance, utilities, interest and depreciation.

The goal of the 300 Day Grazing program is to demonstrate how to graze cattle for 300 days of the year. Due to the drought of 2012 and culling 20 percent of the herd, the 300 Day Grazing demonstration fed more hay than normal -- 79 days.

“Many producers are surprised that it costs $665 per cow per year,”

Like every other business, ranchers have to keep the cost of raising cattle balanced against prices offered by the market.

Troxel said. Harlan Hughes, a North Dakota State University professor emeritus, pegged the average cow cost from the northern plains at $831. Hughes’ cow cost included hired labor, farm insurance, utilities, interest and depreciation that the 300 Day Grazing budget did not. The 300 Day Grazing demonstration doesn’t include fuel and oil, repairs, pasture costs, etc.

“One can see the $665 300 Day Grazing cow cost per year increasing to the $800 cow cost very easily when those costs are included,” he said.

“One very interesting point was the income side,” Troxel said. “The gross income per animal for the 300 Day Grazing demonstration was $1,050. Hughes reported $1,002 for the average gross income per cow for the northern plains cow-calf herds.”

The economic net return per cow for the 300 Day Grazing demonstration was $385 and the return for the northern plains cow-calf herds was $347-- nearly the same.

“Managing costs and putting the cost where it will make the most return,” Troxel said. “That’s what the cattle business is all about today: Being a cost manager.”

AT SOME POINT of time you must pursue your goals for your operation and for me, the Gelbvieh cow was my answer. When I look for a potential show heifer I take many things into consideration, but there’s two main objectives I aim for. The first is obvious; I want a heifer that will bring home a purple banner at the end of the day. But more importantly I want her to be able to preform when she is put out to pasture.

There is a fine line where power and balance meet and at that intersection stands the Gelbvieh cow. She brings to the table many benefits demanded by the commercial cattleman including a smaller farmed, longer living cow, that produces more milk and

pounds of calf while still remaining true to fertility and structure. She does all of this while putting it into a balanced attractive package. Many commercial cattlemen have also found the benefits of crossbreeding with Gelbvieh females allowing them to take advantage of higher feed efficiency with optimal gains and carcass cutability.

To some this is where the definition of “The Gelbvieh Cow” ends, but for me it means more. It is more than just showing and producing beef cattle, it i’s being with a likeminded group of people that would do anything for you. Behind any good breed is an organization pushing for improvements and betterment

of the breed. It’s the opportunity behind “The Gelbvieh Cow” that makes it so special. FFF

As I enter my eleventh year of showing Gelbvieh cattle I have come to realize that the meaning of “The Gelbvieh Cow” varies from ranch to ranch. By Van Tucker

ANIMAL HEALTH

USDA approves first combination MLV vaccine to provide targeted protection against BVD 1b

Research shows 1b now the most predominant BVD virus strain

THE U.S. DEPARTMENT of Agriculture (USDA) has issued the Veterinary Biological License for Viralign 6®, the first combination modified-live virus (MLV) vaccine to provide targeted protection against bovine viral diarrhea (BVD) virus 1b — the most predominant BVD virus strain in the United States. Marketed by Elanco, Viralign 6 also provides protection against BVD viral strains 1a and 2, bovine respiratory syncytial virus (BRSV), infectious bovine rhinotracheitis (IBR) virus and parainfluenza3 (PI3) virus.

“Until now, veterinarians and producers have relied on combination vaccines with BVD 1a and 2 to cross protect against what is now the most predominant strain: 1b,” says Carl Guthrie, D.V.M. and director of Elanco beef technical services. “We are pleased that Elanco’s debut cattle vaccine is the very first USDA-

approved MLV vaccine to include antigens for all three major BVD viruses, including 1b.”

This first-of-its-kind vaccine enables low-volume, subcutaneous administration in cattle 5 months of age or older.

“Even though producers have vaccinated for the BVD virus for years, research shows its incidence has not gone down, and 1b has replaced 1a as the most predominant BVD strain,” says Guthrie. “The good news is that ongoing vaccination programs appear to have decreased the predominance of 1a in the United States. But, it also suggests current modified-live 1a vaccines may not adequately protect calves from 1b infections. Since BVD is the most costly viral disease in cattle, Viralign 6 is an important herd-health tool that will help combat all three major BVD strains.”

BVD is evolving and highly contagiousThe BVD virus is an RNA virus, which means it is

more susceptible to mutation. That’s why researchers monitor BVD viral strains to identify changes in predominance. In fact, a USDA Agriculture Research Service analysis of diagnostic samples shows there has been a shift in predominance of BVD viral strains in the United States. In 1988, subtype 1a was predominant at 51 percent. Twenty years later, 1a ranked third at 18 percent, while subtype 1b had increased in predominance from 41 percent to 61 percent.1 At the same time 1a was decreasing, the overall incidence of BVD virus did not decline.1

“One of the primary sources of the BVD virus is exposure to persistently infected (PI) animals — cattle that are few in number, but shed large amounts of the virus throughout their lives,” says Brad Williams, D.V.M., MBA and Elanco senior technical consultant. “Comprehensive research involving 21,743 head shows that 78 percent of PI cattle were infected with 1b."

According to another study, calves exposed to a PI calf are 43 percent more likely to require treatment for bovine respiratory disease (BRD). And, due to the immune-suppressing nature of BVD, cattle might not show signs of infection even though they suffer from subclinical respiratory and other profit-robbing diseases.

New six-way vaccine proven safe and effectiveThe USDA has reviewed studies documenting no

adverse effects attributable to Viralign 6.6 Additional research shows calves vaccinated with Viralign 6 and then exposed to 1b had no clinical signs of BVD, unlike their control counterparts — 80 percent of which showed signs including diarrhea, nasal discharge, rapid respiration and watery eyes.

Viralign 6 is available in convenient 10-dose and 50-dose packages through veterinarians and animal-health distributors. See the product label for more information or contact your Elanco sales representative or technical consultant, or visit Elanco.us. FFF

FOUNDATION

American Gelbvieh Foundation Offers a Limited Time, Unique Giving Strategy to Save on Taxes

INVESTING IN THE future of Gelbvieh with the American Gelbvieh Foundation is a cornerstone of the AGA’s strategic plan. The American Gelbvieh Foundation’s ability to propel research and member education is unlimited with support from AGA members. AGA members can contribute to the success of the Foundation in numerous ways. One such way is through an IRA charitable rollover, which offers unique advantages to qualified donors.

On January 2 of this year the American Taxpayer Relief Act of 2012 was passed into law, bringing back the popular IRA charitable rollover provision. The Act makes donors age 70½ or older, once again eligible to move up to $100,000 from their IRAs directly to qualified charities. Donors to the American Gelbvieh Foundation have until December 31 to take advantage of this tax advantaged giving strategy.

Using the IRA charitable rollover has many benefits

for donors: • Donors can transfer up to $100,000/year directly

from a Traditional or Roth IRA to the American Gelbvieh Foundation without paying income taxes on the funds transferred.

• For those donors who do not itemize deductions, a gift from an IRA is excluded from reportable income, thus simplifying tax returns.

• Direct transfers from an IRA can satisfy the IRS Required Minimum Distribution (RMD).

• Rollover funds can be used to support the education and research efforts of the American Gelbvieh Association.

To take advantage of this limited time opportunity, or for questions regarding the American Gelbvieh Foundation, contact Dana Stewart at 303-465-2333 or [email protected].

Working Hard for You

Each year the American Gelbvieh Foundation works hard for AGA members by funding critical research projects, providing scholarships

to deserving AGJA members and more. To learn more about the Foundation or to explore how you can support the Foundation's efforts,

ONE OF THE most economical advertising investments Gelbvieh and Balancer® breeders can make is purchasing a business card-sized ad in the Gelbvieh World Breeder’s Sections. At $297 for a one-inch ad, or $594 for a two-inch ad, breeders get year-round exposure for their program. Both commercial producers and AGA staff report turning to the Breeder’s Sections to look for breeders in a particular region that would have cattle for sale.

Gelbvieh World is excited to announce that starting with this November issue breeders can add color to their business card ad. The option of adding color has not been previously available. However through negotiations with the Gelbvieh World printer, we are able to offer color on these ads.

The cost for adding color to a business card ad will be on a yearly basis. To add a two-color option to an ad it is an additional $150 per year; the full color option is an additional $300 per year.

The advantage of adding color to your business card ad is it will help make your ad stand out amongst the sea of black ink on a page. You can also put your logo in color,

helping you build brand recognition for your program. Photos of signature animals to your program can also be in color, making your ad more attractive.

Contact Lynn Valentine at the American Gelbvieh Association (303-465-2333 or [email protected]) to discuss how you can increase your marketing efforts by adding color to your business card ad. Don’t have a business card ad? Lynn can help you get one started today.

Also, be sure to book your date for a GELBVIEH SALES email blast. Reservations fill up quickly for winter and spring sales as only one email blast is sent per day. The current GELBVIEH SALES email list includes almost 3,000 names of seedstock breeders and commercial cow-calf producers. Members who have used this service report that it is an effective way to supplement Gelbvieh World advertising to increase sales. FFF

VIEW FROM THE FIELD

CHIMNEY BUTTE RANCH and Gustin’s Diamond D Gelbvieh both of Mandan, N.D., jointly hosted the 2013 North Dakota Gelbvieh Association (NDGA) field day on September 14. The promise of an afternoon rainstorm did not deter Gelbvieh enthusiasts from South Dakota, Minnesota and Saskatchewan, Canada from joining NDGA members and commercial producer for the day’s events.

Attendees had the opportunity to walk through a group of cow-calf pairs and first calf heifers at the Chimney Butte. Lunch was held at Chimney Butte’s headquarters, followed by a market update from Bobby Hendrickson, cattle buyer representing the National Farmers Organization in St. Cloud, Minn. Bobby has been buying Gelbvieh influenced feeder cattle from NDGA members for the past five years and provided

some firsthand insight into market trends over the next six months.

At Gustin’s Diamond D Gelbvieh, the members and commercial producers viewed pairs on pasture owned by Gustins, as well as a group of partnership females owned with Matthew Rebenitsch of Gumbo Flats Gelbvieh.

At the Diamond D headquarters, their bull battery was on display. A great supper was served with ample opportunity for Gelbvieh fellowship. Susan Willmon, AGA’s director of breed improvement gave a presentation on the development of genomic-enhanced EPDs and the direction towards the use of indexes. Rob Arnold, president of the AGA also spoke about the AGA’s strategic plan and new developments within the association. FFF

IMPACTING the BEEF BUSINESSTM

It Starts with Membership 2014 American Gelbvieh Association Annual Convention

GREETING’S FROM THE American Gelbvieh Association Board of Directors and staff. We are proud to announce and invite you to attend the 2014 AGA Annual Convention. The Annual Convention and National Western Stock Show Gelbvieh activities will be held January 9-13, 2014 in Denver, Colo.

The theme for this year’s event is Impacting the Beef Business – It Starts with Membership. The goal of the 2014 annual convention is to continue the focus on AGA’s long-range strategic plan and to emphasize the fact that the success of the AGA and Gelbvieh and Balancer® cattle begins with membership.

As you’ll read the convention pages, you’ll notice we’re doing convention a little differently this year. All AGA committee meetings will be held in December, allowing all members the opportunity to participate via free web-meetings. The convention itself will focus on member education through expanded, informative member sessions, and an engaging and lively Bull Pen session.

The 2014 AGA Convention web page at www.GELBVIEH.org will be your source of the most up-to-date and complete information for the annual convention and NWSS activities.

Make plans now to participate in both the committee web-meetings and the annual convention. Our ability to impact the beef business starts with membership.

FOR THE 2014 Annual Convention, the AGA is honored to announce that there will be two outstanding inductees into the AGA Hall of Fame:

• Eldon and Kathy Starr, Stapleton, Neb.• Jeanette Rankin, Oilmont, Mont.

The Hall of Fame induction presentation will be made on Saturday, January 11 at 6:30 p.m., during the Awards presentation and "Bulls in the Ballroom" at the headquarters hotel.

REGISTRATION TO THE AGA Annual Convention is free of charge. All convention attendees should pick up name tags and convention booklets at the AGA Convention registration desk.

The headquarters hotel for the 2014 AGA Annual Convention is the DoubleTree by Hilton Denver-Stapleton North. The address is: 4040 Quebec St., Denver, CO 80216. All Annual Convention activities will take place at the headquarters hotel.

THE AMERICAN GELBVIEH Association committees play a vital role in the development and implementation of AGA programs, services and policies. An active committee process is one of the core grass roots values of the AGA.

All AGA committee meetings will be held in December via web-meeting prior to the annual convention. There will be no committee meetings at convention. Instead, all members are invited and encouraged to participate in the committee web-meetings from the comfort of their own home. All meetings will be held the week of December 9-19, 2013.

To participate, members only need an Internet connection. Web-meetings can be accessed via a URL link from a home computer, tablet or mobile device. This is a free service to members and no special software is required. A tele-conference option is also available.

Through the web-meetings, members will be able to listen and watch presentations, participate in discussions, make motions and vote. The core functions and value of the committees – making recommendations to the Board of Directors – will not change. The only change is the venue.

More details and instructions on how to access the web-meetings will be provided to members via the Enewsletter as well as on the AGA website. Please take note of the committee meeting dates and times.

Nominate Outstanding Commercial, Seedstock Producers

IN AN EFFORT to recognize the outstanding commercial and seedstock producers involved in the Gelbvieh breed, the American Gelbvieh Association has created the Outstanding Commercial Producer Award and the Outstanding Seedstock Producer Award. Both awards are based off the Beef Improvement Federation awards that are presented annually at the BIF conference. The AGA will recognize one Outstanding Commercial Producer and one Outstanding Seedstock

Producer annually during the Gelbvieh activities at the National Western Stock Show. The recipients of the AGA awards will then be considered for the Association’s nominations for the BIF awards that year.

State associations are asked to nominate one commercial producer and one seedstock producer they feel is deserving of this recognition. The applications are available below as editable PDF documents and are due to the AGA office by December 1.

The purpose of the meeting shall be the election of directors to fill the offices of those directors whose terms are expiring or which are presently vacant, to ratify the previous actions of the Board of Directors, and for the transaction of other business as may properly come before the meeting.

The nominating committee recommends the following slate of nominees for the five open positions on the AGA Board of Directors. Other nominations may be accepted from the floor during the annual meeting.

NWSS Entries due November 20

ALL BEEF ENTRIES for the 2014 National Western Stock Show are due November 20. This includes entries for the National Gelbvieh and Balancer® Show, Gelbvieh and Balancer Pen Bull Show and the Junior Gelbvieh and Balancer Show.

Remember that all entries must include a registration number. Members can use the AGA online animal registry system to register a 2013 calf and request a registration certificate mailed to you.

The NWSS exhibitor handbook is available online at www.nationalwestern.com. Entries may also be completed online.

Gelbvieh and Balancer exhibitors should note that the NWSS will handle all stalling assignments. Please contact the NWSS directly regarding any stalling needs or concerns.

Heifer Mart for Registered Heifers in the Yards

THE HEIFER MART is a new marketing opportunity for purebred cattle producers at the National Western Stock Show. Cattlemen can enter groups of three to five head of either heifer calves or bred yearlings. There will be a designated area in the Yards set up for the Heifer Mart where these cattle will be displayed on tie rails. Night tie outs will also be provided. There will not be a show associated with these cattle. These females are on display with the intention of selling them by private treaty or for breeders to have an opportunity to display their breeding program as a part of their overall marketing program.

Similar to the NWSS Herd Sire displays, reservations for a spot in the Heifer Mart will be on a first come first serve basis made by contacting the NWSS Livestock Office at 303-299-5559. The Heifer Mart will accommodate cattle by breed during the same time periods that each respective breed arrives and is released from the Yards. Entry frees will be $100 per head payable at time of entry.
