Question from Northwest Ohio to Dr. Shetlar: Over the past couple of weeks, we have had an issue with what appeared to be "ant mounds" all over our #3 green. Initially, I assumed that it was associated with the return of the mating female turfgrass ants that we normally see in the early fall/late summer. However, these mounds have persisted for a couple of weeks now. The "ant mounds" are very widespread and once dew whipped return almost instantly. Each superintendent or chemical rep I have shown this to was blown away

by how quickly they returned and the fact that we couldn't find any ants. Today, totally puzzled and with finally enough time to do some digging, I caught the offending creature. I have Googled and consulted my turfgrass texts to no avail and was hoping you would have time to look at the attached picture (albeit a poor one) and give me an idea of what it is. It's not doing any remarkable damage, and I'm sure a little insecticide will do the trick, but I was extremely curious. Dr. Shetlar's Response:You have been hit by the seed corn beetle! This beetle has been a real nuisance all year on some courses! Usually, it is a late summer, early fall pest. As far as we can tell, these beetles don’t actually establish in the greens or tees, but something is certainly attracting them to the area. Perhaps it is the constant moisture and odors (since the corn fields have been very dry this summer). There is little that can be done as the beetles don’t seem to feed and thus are not overly susceptible to any insecticide treatment. Dr. Niemczyk has stated that he has a course that he consults with that has had pretty good success with Azatrol(a formulation of azadirachtin). This botanical insecticide is known to have some good insect repellency attributes and this may be chasing the beetles away. Reprinted from the:

November 10, 2012 From the "War of Independence" to the war in Afghanistan, over 1.3 million American soldiers have lost their lives in the name of freedom. Of those fallen heroes, perhaps the most numbered losses (623,000) occurred on our own soil. The Great Civil War prompted then President Abraham Lincoln on July 7th, 1862 to sign legislation authorizing the Federal Government to purchase land to serve as a final resting place for soldiers whom had lost their lives while serving the country. Nearly 150 years and 114 cemeteries later, Mr. Lincolns legacy lives on. With the single exception of "Arlington National Cemetery" in Virginia which is managed by the Department of the Army, all are administered by the Department of Veterans Affairs. While these cemeteries are scattered throughout the United States and Puerto Rico, our own state of Ohio has 2 National Cemeteries. Since 1994, your Ohio Lawn Care Association through its generous membership has devoted countless hours and materials to the task of beautifying the hallowed grounds at the Dayton National Veterans Cemetery in Dayton, Ohio. In 2011, ONLA teamed up with OLCA so we could reach out to all members to join for this greatest of events "A Grateful Embrace". We added another site that is in great need of our help. The "Ohio Western Reserve Cemetery" in Rittman, Ohio will again run simultaneously with the Dayton project. There will be donuts and coffee for volunteers upon their arrival and lunch upon completion of the days work. Promptly

at 9:00 am, we will have a short ceremony at each venue capturing the spirit and humbleness of the event which will include guest speakers, Honor Guard and Benediction. Most of the materials (fertilizer) will be provided through the generous donations of our industry suppliers however we are asking that those who can, donate 5 bags of fertilizer to the cause as well. You'll need to bring spreaders, blowers and all of the manpower you can muster to help us get 160 acres of turf fertilized on that day. Arrival and check in times for each event will be 7:00 am and work should be completed by noon. Don't miss out on this unique opportunity to honor those men, women and their families both living and dead who provided the ultimate sacrifice that we might remain a free nation. See below for details on how to sign up. We hope you'll choose to join us on Saturday, the 10th of November in Dayton or Rittman for "A Grateful Embrace". Show your support to our soldiers and veterans and do what is right. Fill out the form below and fax it to the OLCA office at 740-452-2552 by October 19. PLEASE JOIN US! Doug Hague

By Bob Brame, director, North Central Region October 31, 2012 Does your course have irrigation sprinklers that are below ground level? It is very common to find low sprinklers as a system ages. Settling, freeze/thaw, turf growth and topdressing are the more common issues behind low sprinklers. More important than the cause – the compromise to irrigation coverage uniformity is significant and the problem will only intensify unless corrected. While the dry season has passed, dry will return and irrigation system inadequacies that are not corrected will cycle around to once again cause problems. Now is a good time to invest in sprinkler raising and leveling. Heads up, for better coverage, healthier turf and more dependable playability. Call or email anytime if we can assist with irrigation system improvements or any other aspect of your

maintenance operation. Source: Bob Brame, [email protected] or 859-356-3272.

Heads like this one can completely negate the engineering that went into providing accurate irrigation coverage.

Heads Up!

By Bob Vavrek, senior agronomist, North Central Region November 14, 2012 Every flaw and shortcoming of an antiquated irrigation system will be magnified tenfold during a lengthy drought. In the absence of rain for six to eight weeks, localized areas of excess coverage overlap will eventually become swamps and dry spots will become as barren as the desert when the irrigation system is the only source of water. Soggy green grass next to the irrigation head surrounded by a zone of dry, brown turf then green grass again is a classic example of sprinkler malfunction, or the dreaded donut. Is it improper water pressure? Is it a worn nozzle? If you found the dreaded dry donut around fairway sprinklers during this summer’s severe drought then the golf course is past due to have its irrigation system evaluated by an experienced irrigation consultant. Upgrading the irrigation system will help the course use water and electricity more efficiently and who

wouldn’t want to conserve two of our most precious recourses? The expertise provided by USGA agronomists and irrigation consultants can help your course provide golfers with firmer and faster playing conditions - often achieving both using less water. You know where to find us at USGA.org. To find local irrigation consultants, see the directory at the American Society of Irrigation Consultants.
