KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS BLESSED SACRAMENT COUNCIL #13240 NOVEMBER 2012 The Kn ightly News Voting and the Duties of a Catholic Voter Brothers, as you know, the Church’s teachings and the Sacrament of Marriage are under attack. Proposition 8 seeks to defend the teachings of Christian beliefs. Please read it carefully and vote it appropriately. As stated by the Conference of Catholic Bishops, “ We must begin with the commitment never to intentionally kill or collude in the killing, of any innocent human life, no matter how broken, unformed, disabled or desperate that life may seem. The truth of it is: As long as the society accepts the commercial destruction of the youngest and weakest, none are safe. The human family will make little progress dealing with capital punishment, poverty, euthanasia and other attacks on human life and dignity, if we allow the routine destruction of our youngest and most helpless sisters and brothers. Pope John Paul II reminds us in the Gospel of Life, It is impossible to further the common good without acknowledging and defending the right to life, upon which all other inalienable rights of individuals are founded and from which they develop.” A Catholic cannot vote for a candidate who takes a position in favor of an intrinsic evil, such as the direct and intentional destruction of innocent human life. Proposition 6 seeks to preserve the sacrament of marriage as a union between a man and a woman. This does not cut off protection for the parties of a civil union, if that is what the legislature desires, but it does seek to take the government out of defining the Church’s sacrament which existed long before the government stepped in to protect the parties to the marriage and the children. When we register to vote, we willingly accept the task of becoming educated on the issues and candidates and voting with a properly formed conscience. The bishops do not intend to tell Catholics for whom or against whom to vote. Their purpose is to help Catholics form their consciences in accordance with God’s truth. They recognize that the responsibility to make choices in political life rests with each individual in light of a properly formed conscience. VOTE YOUR CONSCIOUS! To support our Church and the sacrament of marriage I urge you to consider your vote carefully, exercise your informed conscious and consider voting for both of these propositions. God bless, CHRISTOPHER E. KERNAN State Deputy A Special Message from the State Deputy

Worthy Officers and Brothers All:Happy Hallowe'en, All Saints Day and All Souls
Day! We have lots of great days to celebrate here right at the top of November. Hallowe'en, or All Hallows' Eve, started as a Catholic vigil observance of the Holy Day of Obligation that follows it. All-Saints Day started in 609 by Pope Boniface IV as "Feast of All Martyrs" and was originally on May 13th. In the 8th Century, Pope Gregory III (731-41) moved it to November 1st and renamed it "Feast of All Saints". Pope Sixtus IV (1471-84) made it a Holy Day of Obligation, added the vigil (All Hallows' Eve) and added the Octave of All-Saints which was celebrated until 1955 when it was abolished just prior to Vatican II.
November is also the month where we take a moment to give thanks for all of God's wondrous works in our lives. Thanksgiving in the United States was first celebrated in 1621 as a celebration of the harvest and the working together of the colonists at Plymouth and the Native Americans. However, it was not until 1941, over three-hundred years later, that President Franklin D. Roosevelt signed legislation making Thanksgiving Day the fourth (and not always final) Thursday of November and designated it as a national holiday.
So, as I usually do in the November newsletter, I am going to use this space to say what I am thankful for. I am, first and foremost, thankful for our beautiful Catholic faith that we all share and for God's love and mercy. I am thankful for my son, Allen, Jr., who is the most amazing gift God has blessed me with. I am thankful for my parents, Al and Fran Venezio, who love me unconditionally and who have instilled in me the values of tradition and hard work. I am thankful for a great job in an amazing community filled with wonderful people, including all of you, my fellow Brother Knights. Each one of you help to make our parish community and the cities in which we live and work better places for everyone.
This month, Clermont Middle School Band is starting up their spirit days every Monday. If any of you can help us out, please take a flyer and order pizza
anytime on Monday for delivery, carry out or dine-in. 20% of what you spend comes back to us! We would be very thankful for your support.
I hope that this Thanksgiving, each of you will take a moment to thank our almighty Lord for all he has graced you with this year and for the blessings he bestows upon us, the Knights of Columbus. We live to serve His Church and His people. Let us always remember that we are united in that cause and that the Brotherhood of the Knights of Columbus is bigger than any one of us individually, but that without each and every individual man, the Knights of Columbus could not exist.

Lecturerʼs Notes All Saints Day (a Holy Day ce lebra ted on November 1) is in honor of all the Saints whether canonized or not. Veneration of the Saints dates back to the year 600 when the Saints were called upon in prayer and remembered during the Liturgy because they are seen as intercessors in Heaven, who could bring a personʼs needs directly to God. The Blessed Mother is especially honored with devotion: shrines, feasts, and special titles were created to revere her. All Souls Day is a day set apart on November 2 to pray for all the faithful departed who are still suffering for their sins. I will be selling tickets at the next council meeting for the K of C 10th Anniversary Dinner on November l7. The tickets are $10.00 apiece. You can see me before or after the council meeting. If time permits, I would like to show the Video, “To be a Patriot” for those members planning on taking the 4th degree this November. Mike Ogden, Lecturer
