Snapper fi shing on the Peninsula

One of the biggest tourist attractions and money spinners on the Peninsula is recreational fi shing. In particular, the annual migratory Snapper run into the bay during the Spring months is an event keenly anticipated by fi shermen and stakeholders to the industry.

The multiplier eff ect of users purchasing boats, bait, fuel and fi shing gear on the local economy is no doubt enormous. So big is user numbers and dollar fi gures that it needs to be protected at all cost.

The Department of Primary Industry has recognized the importance of protecting the Snapper run and is currently undertaking an intensive study in the bay. Using electronically tagged fi sh and a number of submerged beacons in the bay, they are hoping to get a better understanding of the migratory spawning habits of the fi sh.

Without pre empting what these results might show up, we wouldn’t be surprised if they recommend we fall into line with other Snapper fi shing states like South and West Australia and have a closed season during the spawning month of November.

Whilst at fi rst blush this might be a

disappointment to many fi shermen, the

build up to the opening day would be keenly

anticipated and planned for. Besides, it doesn’t

seem logical to fi sh for Snapper whilst they

are at their most vulnerable and producing

future generations.

Anecdotal evidence from local “ramp rats”

(avid fi sho’s,) suggests also that bag and size

limits should also be altered to further help

and protect the industry. Lifting the minimum

size limit to 34cm with a bag limit of 6 with

only 2 fi sh over 44cm, we are sure would

meet with the approval of most fi shermen

and go a long way to protect the species for

future generations.

The good news is, yes. Under certain circumstances you can occupy the property prior to settlement pursuant to a Licence Agreement.

What is this agreement?

To occupy a property you have purchased prior to settlement you will be required to enter into a Licence Agreement. This document formalises the granting of temporary permission to take possession of your future home.

Under what circumstances would I enter into this agreement:

1. Settlement of your sale is prior to your purchase and the property you are purchasing is vacant.

2. The property you are purchasing is vacant and you desire to take possession prior to settlement.

3. Settlement of your sale or purchase does not proceed on the due date and you have all your furniture packed and possibly on a truck.

What is involved:

• As a purchaser you become the licensee and will usually pay legal costs for preparation and execution of the document together with a weekly licence fee in lieu of rent.

• You take full responsibility for the property including payment of all services, charges rates etc once you take occupation.

• You must take out full insurance cover for the building.

• You will not be aff orded the rights of a tenant under the Residential Tenancies Act.

While a purchaser is well within their

rights to request early occupancy, a vendor is also well within their rights to refuse.

That is, they are hard working people who enjoy family, socialise similarly to us and play their chosen sport on weekends (no golf here.) Spring is traditionally a time for growth, but at Mornington Park Primary School the growth never stops.

In what seems no time at all, our little Preps grow into Grade Six students, ready to leave for Secondary College. Just have a look at Brandyn and Jasmyn.

The Grade 3/4 Steiner class has been busy planting vegetables in barrels around the school and has recently been harvesting snow peas and lettuces.

Mainstream grades have been planting in vegetable bags which can be moved around the playground and taken indoors at night. The students are hoping that a recent addition to their garden - a mandarin tree, will bear fruit next year.

The buildings are also growing with the renovation of the administration wing. This will include an open 5/6 Learning Area, Science and Wet areas, Library, tiered seating in a Performing Arts area and several quiet areas.

The Mainstream Prep class is a fascinating place for our students to experience a diff erent kind of growth. They have been watching eggs move and crack, eagerly awaiting the birth of each chicken.

Their studies have been around the life cycle of the chickens and some amazing pieces of writing have come from these young students. They use iPads as part of their investigative learning, capturing every movement on camera. It has also been a wonderful experience in sharing, responsibility and values.
