SPORTS STAR OF THE MONTH

Do you know a local ‘Sports Star’ we should hear about?Send us an email so we

can share the [email protected]

Nicole Docherty, 17, of Leonay has been crowned AA Open Ladies State Champion for 2011 after taking out the BMX NSW State Titles in Liverpool last m o n t h . W h i l e i t w a s h e r 1 3 t h consecutive State Titles, it was Nicoleʼs first at this level. The AA Open Ladies is the highest level in this sport, making Nicole the best female BMX rider in the State.

Nicole has been competing since she was 3 years old having been inspired by her older brother Ian to jump on a bike. “Iʼve basically been competing since I could ride a bike”. “I just love the sport”.

who participate in a non-competitive class until they turn 8. I really enjoy helping them out and watching them have a go”.

Nicoleʼs mum Lynne is also club President and has been very active in securing a sustainable future for the club through accessing and applying for various government and community grants available to junior sports clubs.

Nicoleʼs next challenge is at the Victoria State Titles in Shepparton later this month. And there are the National Titles in Mt Gambier, SA in April 2012.

Asked whether it is a possibility that she could one day follow in the footsteps of Panthers BMX Club member Luke Madill and represent Australia at the Olympics, the level headed teenager is certainly hopeful and realistic.

“Itʼs definitely a dream to make an Olympic team but there is so much work to be done to get there. For now I need to just focus on my upcoming events and concentrate on doing well at them”.

The recent victory was made even sweeter for Nicole after recovering from a horror crash in Perth earlier in the year where she badly injured her shoulder.

“I was off the bike for a long time because of the injury and the treatment I was getting wasnʼt really working. It was pretty frustrating. I was very fortunate to come across Shannon Codd from Active Body Physiotherapy who got me back on the bike with a great rehab and strength program. “He got me doing the right exercises and within a couple of sessions with Shannon I was back on the bike and able to compete again”.

The Year 11 student, from St Maryʼs Senior High School, has had to combine her studies with a rigorous training regime of 6 sessions per week with each session ranging anywhere between 1 and 3 hours. “Training is a combination of track work, sprint training on the road and strength training too. My track coach is Brett Scrues from Liverpool so I have to travel to the track over there for some of my sessions as well”.

Nicoleʼs love of BMX racing is also shown through her involvement as coach of the U/8s Sprockets with the Penrith Panthers BMX Club. “The ʻSprocket Rocketsʼ are our junior riders

LOCAL LEGEND

The Nepean Triathlon has long been an iconic event in the Emu Leonay area and this month celebrates its 30th successive race, making it the longest running triathlon in Australia. So there is no better time for the Nepean Triathlon to be this monthʼs Sports Buzz Local Legend. Although nowadays the Nepean Triathlon is held at the Sydney International Regatta Centre at Penrith Lakes, it will forever be remembered as a landmark event that brought some of Australiaʼs best athletes to the waters of the Nepean River and the streets of Emu Plains and Leonay.

Many locals will remember the road closures that made the race possible as well as the streets being lined with thousands of vocal supporters cheering on the runners as they climbed the steep hills of Leonay on the grueling 14km run leg.

The race was first held in 1982 after a group of locals like Len Stacker, Mark Wallace, Ron Oxley and Dennis Coffey put their heads together after watching a story about the Hawaiin Ironman on the Wide World of Sports.

The first Nepean Triathlon actually started and finished in Emu Plains, at the car park on River Rd near Regatta

Park. The swim leg started on the Western bank of the r iver and competitors swam across to the Rowing Club where there were no bike racks, rather a handler to hold the bike and look after all of the athletes gear. From here the athletes rode out to Wallacia and back, and then set off on their run leg through Emu Plains and Leonay.

In total, the first event was an 800m swim, 40km ride and 14km run compared to the 1km:30Km:10km event held today.

One of the founders of the event, former Leonay resident Mark Wallace, recalls how much the event has changed since its inception.

“A strong parallel can be drawn between how much triathlon has grown as a sport and how much Penrith has grown and developed as a city. Triathlon was just a novelty event in the early 80ʼs but by 2000 it was an Olympic event. Similarly, when the Nepean Triathlon started, the only set of lights we rode through was on Mulgoa Rd at the Ambulance Station, and Panthers Leagues Club was only just being built”.

Mark also reminisces about how he was fortunate enough to jog the run leg of the course with former Commonwealth Gold medalist Robert de Castella, the day before the 1984 race. “Robʼs wife Gaylene Clewʼs was in the event and actually won it that year”.

“There was a real buzz around the streets and we had to stop a few times for him to sign autographs”.

Former Chairman of the Nepean Triathlon, Len Stacker, recalls how the Nepean Triathlon was truly a local event with a lot of local sports clubs contributing to its success. “The Little Athletics Club ran the canteen, the Cricket Club provided drinks stations out on the run leg, the Rugby League

C lub p rov ided ass i s tance w i th marshalling and manning the drinks tent and the Netball Club were responsible for writing race numbers on competitors legs with thick black textas at the beginning of the race. In return, the local clubs and organisations that helped out received a lot of the proceeds raised by the event”.

Another local, Emu Plains resident Warwick Brennan has been the race organiser, who with Gordon Bell from Emu Plains, heads the organising committee and has done so for most of its 30 years.

“The race has changed a lot since it first started. It really was the highest profile triathlon in Australia with some of the countryʼs best triathleteʼs of all time traveling to compete”.

“World class triathleteʼs like Greg Welch (Hawaiin Ironman Champ 1994), Brad Bevan, Luke Harrop, Tim Bentley, and locals like Trent and Leigh Chapman, have all won the event”.

“The spo r t i s now a l o t more professional and for obvious reasons had to move to its current site at the Regatta centre. But it really was a special event when held at the river. I mean the run leg included a scramble up ̒ Heartbreak hillʼ, a dirt track leading to Lapstone Station, and along the railway line back to Sanctuary Drive in Leonay”.

YOUNG LOCAL GYMNAST COMPETED IN HOBART

In Hobart, Tasmania in July this year, Nepean Creative and Performing Arts High Schoolʼs, Claire Rutledge, of year 7 competed in the 2011 National Club Championships and World T r i a l s f o r Tu m b l i n g a n d Performance.

ALL-ROUND ATHLETEfrom page 1Emu Plains Public School student Jeremy Crawshaw has won a silver medal in the 200m at the recent NSWPSSA State Athletics Championships at Sydney Olympic Park Athletic Centre, Homebush.

The 10 year old speedster, who is in Year 5, qualified for the State Championships in the 100m and 200m after taking out gold at the Sydney West Athletics Carnival in September. In a rare occurrence, Jeremy actually tied for first place in the 100m at this meet and the judges struggled to split the winners after they both clocked the same times.

Jeremy also broke the record at the District PSSA Carnival in the 100m clocking a time of 13:62 seconds. His performances were so dominant at this carnival that he was named the Junior Boys Champion for the whole athletics meeting.

Although he has had success at a high level, Jeremy relies on his natural talent to do well as he does not participate in any specific training and only competes in athletics at a school level. This really is indicative of his raw speed and ability.

Jeremyʼs favourite sport is rugby league and he has played football for Emu Plains since he was 5 years old. At the clubʼs recent presentation day, Jeremy was awarded Best and Fairest for his U/10s team and was also named Mod Footballer of the Year. Although Jeremy had a very successful season on the field, the highlight of his season was representing his club in the Coca-Cola club relay at Penrith Stadium.

The event run by Gymnastics Australia was a levels competition, meaning that you compete against any age group but they have the same level of ability.

Claire is a member of the ʻKachan School of Tumbling and Performanceʼ and overall her club came 8th out of 22 clubs around Tasmania, and averaged 51.207 points. Claire competed in Level 5 Tumbling Women, which she came 13th out of 17 competitors (51.700 points), Level 5 Trampoline Women, which she came 28th out of 45 competitors (49.000 points), and the Level 5 DMT (Double Mini Tramp) Women (which she unfortunately fell in), and came 29th out of 33 competitors. She is looking forward to next year to try her skills again.

EMU CC 1st GRADE OFF TO THEIR BEST START IN YEARSOur local 1st Grade cricket team have started the 2011/12 season in the best form for some t ime wi th some outstanding batt ing and bowling performances.

Despite losing the first game of the season, in trying conditions on a dodgy wicket, the side has dominated their opposition with some devastating batting performances.

They were washed out after batting their way to a dominant position against last yearʼs premiers Consumers CC and then chased down a 250+ run total in the next match against Colyton CC. Geoff Sullivan hit 80 and Ben Carter in his first game in the top grade for the club was unlucky not to raise the bat, dismissed for 99 after being caught on the boundary.

In their most recent match, Emu made light work of Kingswood Park, smashing a total of 270 (Andrew Williams 80, Dan Lindsay 51 and Marty Romer 43) and dismissed KPCC for 64 (Brett Newman 4-13, Craig Sheens 2-18 and Luke Murphy 2-9).

TOP FORM IN THE TOP GRADEEmu Plains sports star Kevin Geyer has returned to the Sydney Grade Cricket competition after several years in retirement. The Penrith CC, and former NSW batsman has returned in impressive form guiding the team to victory against Mosman with a strong 95 runs.

TEEN TOUCH SENSATIONSLarissa Canning and Elise Short have been selected to represent Lower Blue Mountains U16 Representative Touch Football team at the Junior State Titles in Wollongong in February 2012.

TOP STICK FOR CLUB STALWART Emu Plains Hockey Club stalwart, Michelle Kennedy has capped off a stellar season being selected in the Australian over 45s team to tour Fiji next year.

Michelle was instrumental in leading Emu Plains to both the 2nd and 3rd Grade titles earlier this year and is heavily involved as Vice President of the EPHC.

TOUCH AND GO FOR LOCALSA group of locals to the Emu Leonay area have started up a social game of touch football at Leonay Oval every Sunday morning.

Starting at 8:00am, the game is open to anyone wanting to have a bit of fun. The teams are basically split up into Emu vs Leonay depending on where you live or where you grew up, but participation isnt just restricted to those living in this area.

Stuart Meyers, who lives in Emu Plains but plays for Leonay due to growing up in the suburb says, “Itʼs a great way to get a bit of exercise to start the day. There are plenty of familiar faces but itʼs good to meet new people down there too”. “We want to see as many people down there as possible. The more the merrier”!

“Itʼs also fun to have a bit of a laugh at some people who arenʼt as quick or as skillful as they used to be”, Stuart jokes.

CYCLING TO NEW CALEDONIAFormer Emu Leonay Sports Buzz Sports Star of the month, cyclist Eric Nueman has just come back from a trip to New Caledonia where he took part in a week of road racing with the NSW Development Team.

He had a successful tour coming 5th in the Time Trail and was given the award for the Most Aggressive Rider of the Tour. The road conditions on one stage were “horribly dodgy”, but Eric was able to use the conditions to make some good attacks. Later in the same stage he came off the bike on the sand, but both he and the bike were fine. With the Qantas grounding, the team had to stay on the tropical island for an extra day, which they were all happy about and secretly hoped the dispute would last another week!

BILL BALL OVAL

Former Leonay resident Bill Ball passed away from bowel cancer in August last year, but his name will live on after Penrith Council approved the naming of the cricket and AFL oval within Cook Park at St Marys to be named The Bill Ball Oval.

It is a fitting tribute to Bill who dedicated so much of his life to cricket in the Penrith area. He was instrumental in Penrith Cricket Clubʼs introduction into the Sydney Grade Competition in the 1970ʼs and spent many years officiating as club President and Secretary through the mid 1980ʼs and 90ʼs.

Bill Ball Oval is home to Penrith CCs 3rd and 4th Grade teams. Bill is survived by wife Helen, son Wayne, daughter-in-law Laura and grandchildren Thomas, 12 and Lauren, 11.

When Emu Plains Little Athletics discus thrower, Angus Harold, represented Penrith Anglican College at the NSW PSSA Championships last month, he certainly didnʼt expect to beat his PB by 3m and throw a gold medal winning 39.62m.

In his 4th season of Little Aʼs, 11 year old Angus has excelled at discus despite being of a smaller frame than most of the discus throwers he competes against. After placing 3rd at State and 6th at Nationals in the same event last year, Angus surprised everyone, including himself, to take home 1st place this year.

Angus was very disciplined and trained very hard to achieve this result. He is fortunate to live on acreage where he can practice every day. He also takes the opportunity to work with neighbor Vern Huff, who gives him guidance and direction with his technique. You Tube has also proved handy for Angus as he has studied the techniques of the worldʼs best discus throwers in honing his own skill and technique.

Unfortunately, Angus was unable to compete at the Nationals in Darwin, held in September this year, as he came 4th at the selection trials and they only took the top 3 placegetters. He certainly hopes to maintain this top form and continue his hard work so that he can gain selection next year.

The talented athlete is not only a field specialist though. He has also competed at a State level in middle distance events 800m and 1500m.

MARATHON EFFORT FOR A GREAT CAUSE

The Adam Crouch Foundation was set up in loving memory of Adam, a loving, thoughtful and active 3 year old boy who was full of life and made an impression on many people who were lucky enough to have met him. He tragically drowned in a friends backyard pool on the 12th October 2007.

The Adam Crouch Foundation holds an Annual Family Fun Day in October each year, so to coincide with this a group of local runners Shane and Dean Simpson, Grant McFadden, Peter Tracey, Michael Wholohan, Steve Muller, Ash Major and Dave Watson set out on a run from Dubbo to Springwood. Each of the runners ran more than 40km each day for 3 days and raised over $5,500 for the foundation.

The group enjoyed many laughs together but no more so than when the support vehicles (one of which was donated by Winnebago) left one of the runners, Steve Muller, stranded at Bathurst Mc Donalds.

PANTHERS TRI CLUB REPORTfrom page 2PTC had many of its Triathletes competing over the weekend. Close to 20 of our finest female Triathletes competed on Sunday the 30th October in the Trishave Womens Triathlon across all distances. And what a day was to be had. Not only did all of our girls finish with the biggest smile on their faces,   we had 1st in the 7-9yrs, 1st in 14-19yrs as well as overall 1st  in 20-29, 2nd & 3rd in 30-39, 3rd & 4th in 40-49.

Our club was so well represented not only out on the course but also as volunteers for the day.

itʼs great to see how a healthy lifestyle can unite friends and family alike.

We also had some of our members (President included) compete at the Huskisson Triathlon Festival and all did really well with the majority placing within their age group in the Sprint and Olympic Distances. By all accounts it

was absolutely perfect conditions for a Triathlon and it showed with their results.

We also had a few members compete in the Fitz's Challenge. The distances in this cycle event range from 50km to 207km - a massive accomplishment for those who participated. Overall winner on the day was Andrea Oracki.

PTC is so proud of you all. What a great weekend. And if this is the beginning of the season - lookout world - PTC is coming.

Menʼs Golf ReportBY CAMERON FAICO

This yearʼs club championships have been run and won and a fitting result has seen perennial bridesmaid Chris Blakeley finally burst through to record his inaugural title. A year of consistency has been rewarded in an emotional triumph for the Leonay junior.“I finally got myself a championship”, Blakeley announced. “I got up by fifteen shots which I'm really proud of”.

After heading into the final round last year in the lead, only to relinquish it and eventually miss the top eight, Blakeley has shown enormous resolve and commitment to correct some of the flaws in his game and produce some consistency under pressure.

He extended his lead and stamped his dominance on the field and will look to put an exclamation mark on his outstanding season, which has included victory in the Ray Dukes Cup, by complet ing a double in the matchplay section.

Ron Bradley, who like Blakeley has had a wonderfully consistent season, also produced when it mattered down the stretch, taking out the B grade championship. Bradley has been in stellar form over the past six months and shot a remarkable five over par 72 in the final round to steal victory by two shots from runner-up Joel Lennon.

The C grade title is always a hard slog right until the final hole and Don Holland prevailed in the war of attrition,

recording an impressive eight shot triumph.

The Matchplay title is sure to produce some intriguing contests, with the trophy set to be decided throughout November. President Kevin Small looks to be in a David vs. Goliath fixture taking on Blakeley first up. Son-of-a-gun Jason Cupples has qualified in fourth position and will battle Paul Juhasz who does possess some matchplay exper ience. Pennant veterans Stuart Meyers and David Stevenson will clash in what shapes as the feature match in round one.  Whilst John New and Cam Hunter will shape-up in the other quarter-final.F O L L O W M E O N T W I T T E R @CamFaico

LADIES GOLF REPORT

Leonay Ladies Golf had the best of course conditions for their Club Championships in October. In a very t ight encounter, two of the pre tournament favourites were in a hard fought battle till the very last hole.

In the end, Barbra Grame took out the overall Championship with a 1-stroke

victory over Judith Knox. Grame remained very calm under pressure to fire an 85-85-87 for a superb 3-round total of 257 to narrowly edge out the classy Knox.

Janina Linfoot, with a handicap of 23, won both the A Grade Nett and overall Nett Championships with a score of 206.

Muriel Paine took out the B Grade Championship with a 3-round scratch total of 299. While Noelene Braid, handicap of 31, won the B Grade Nett Championship with a total of 213 over the 3 rounds.

Carolyn Fitzpatrick was the Veterans Champion with a 2-round Nett total of 134.

Overall, the course was fabulous for the 3 days of Championship competition and the course staff should be congratulated for their work in preparing such a beautiful course.

We look forward to reporting on the 2011 Matchplay Championships in our December issue as Barbra Grame, Judith Knox, Julie Sutcliffe and Janina Linfoot vie for the Division 1 title. While the Division 2 Matchplay Championship will be fought out between Muriel Payne, J Flynn, Noelene Braid and A Scheiler.
