the logo

The logo is a key element of the DCMS brand.

The DCMS logo has been strengthened, with theadditional element of the full name, to enhance awarenessand create better communication.

It is made up of two elements, the box symbol and thename. To maximise their impact, they have a fixedrelationship that must remain consistent.

The logo must be seen on everything we do, frompublications to stationery to exhibitions. It must alwaysbe applied consistently, in the DCMS colour palette and inthe top left hand corner of an application (unlessotherwise stated).

It should not be redrawn, digitally manipulated or altered. The logo must always be reproduced from a masterreference. This is available in tiff, eps and jpeg format.

Tiff: all professionally printed applications.Eps: large format ie exhibitions.Jpeg: Microsoft programmes.

10mm

The DCMS logo must always be consistently reproducedand clearly visible. Therefore a minimum size has beenestablished for the logo. The size is 10mm measuredacross the width of the DCMS box symbol.

There is no maximum size. The logo is available in a largerfile size for large reproduction formats, ie exhibitions.

The DCMS logo is also protected by an exclusion zone.this will ensure the logo has maximum impact andvisibility on all communications.

The exclusion zone is calculated by using two thirds, ofthe height of the box, as illustrated. Please observe thisrule and ensure that no other graphic elements (such astext or imagery) intrude into the zone.

co-branding

Department for Culture, Media and Sport 15

Independent and partnership organisations that areworking with the DCMS require a joint branding. Thisworks on two different levels of branding hierarchy.

Joint ventures (50:50 relationship)This is when a partnership organisation is workingalongside the DCMS in a joint initiative. The partnershiplogo should have a similar hierarchy and status as theDCMS logo. The other organisation’s guidelines shouldalso be consulted.

On front covers the partnership logo can appear in white, black or its own colour, provided this complements thedesign and print specification. It should be placed at thebase of the page, ranged left.

Accreditation (80:20 relationship)This is when the DCMS is the lead organisation and thepartnership organisation is endorsing the initiative. Thepartnership logo can appear in white, black or its owncolour, provided this complements the design and printspecification. It should only appear on the outer backcover, in a similar size relationship to the DCMS logo.

The DCMS is often involved at an accreditation, consultantor supporting level on other organisation’s initiatives. TheDCMS logo should always appear in order to highlight ourrole in these initiatives and to raise our profile and publicawareness.

Other organisation materials (20:80 relationship)When the DCMS is endorsing another organisation’sinitiative the DCMS logo should have a strong visualpresence on the page. The preferred placement is on thefront cover. The visual relationship between both logosshould be balanced. The alternative preferred position is onthe outer back cover.

The DCMS logo can appear in white, a colour from thepalette or black. The DCMS logo must always beconsistently reproduced and clearly visible. The minimumsize and minimum clearance guidance must be followed.

The minimum size is 10mm measured across the width of the DCMS box symbol. The logo exclusion zone iscalculated by using two thirds, of the height of the box,as illustrated.

08

The Government set out their strategy for developing and promoting asustainable approach to tourism in Tomorrow’s Tourism (DCMS 1999). Thispromoted adopting of sustainable development principals based on Agenda 21in all tourism strategies, whether at national, regional or local level together withthe need to develop a series of national statistical indicators to help measureprogress in achieving sustainable tourism.

The former English Tourist Council (ETC) published a sustainable strategy Timefor Action in 2001 in response to the challenges set down in Tomorrows Tourismand the first set of indicators National Sustainable Tourism Indicators.

• Protect and enhance the natural environment and destinations;

• Support local communities and culture;

• Benefit the local economies of destinations.

Responsibility for developing the ETC’s sustainable tourism indicators passed toDCMS in 2003 with the expectation of a further reporting cycle.

Level two headingIt has become increasingly evident to us as we have been collecting data forthese indicators that some are already being superseded by more sophisticatedthinking, especially at regional level, that data no longer exists, or the basis ofmeasurement has changed so that comparison of the data over time is notpossible. We therefore need to look again at the indicators developed by theETC to ensure that they remain relevant, that presentation of the data continuesto provide a true snapshot of sustainable tourism in England, and if newindicators need to be developed to reflect current sustainable tourism prioritiesand concerns.

Level three heading

The work programme outlined by the Tourism Reform Implementation Group(TRIG) which was set up in 2004 to oversee the programme of work set out inTomorrow’s Tourism Today (DCMS 2004), will give us the opportunity to revisethe indicators. One of the key findings of the TRIG sub-group on sustainabilitywas that sustainability work should be at the centre of tourism strategy at alllevels and that it should be informed at operation level by an improved and web-based Destination Managers Handbook which will provide all the toolsmanagers need for implementing a sustainable approach to tourism.

Photography is a powerful and dynamic tool. It cancommunicate the diversity, energy and personality ofwhat we do. A great photo, used well, can tell a story farbetter than words.

Photography should convey emotions and atmosphere. Itshould encapsulate ideas about growth, innovation, creativity and achievement. Look beyond thestraightforward and typical to find a more inspirationalperspective. Consider detail or unusual angles to createeffective communication and engage the audience.

Images can be reproduced in full colour, duotone or blackand white.

Only use images that are relevant and add value. Ensurethe content does not offend or alienate. Avoid clichés,racial and gender stereotyping. Images must be printquality, 300dpi.

accessible pdf files

Department for Culture, Media and Sport 56

1. Start with an accessible document.

The easiest way to create an accessible PDF document isto start with an accessible text document. Make sure yourWord document is formatted correctly with headers, image tags etc.

To create accessible PDF documents you must have a

full copy of Adobe Acrobat Professional version 6+.

2. Open the PDF document in Adobe Acrobat:

(a) make sure the document is tagged. Go to: Advanced >Accessibility > Add tags to document (this may havealready been done in another application – if so, click OK).

(b) Complete the Metadata information. Go to: File >Document Properties. Under the Descriptions tab. Entera title, author and complete other fields as necessary.(The author should be DCMS rather than an individual ifthe document is going outside DCMS). Under Advancedtab. Set the language to English.

(c) Set the tab order. Click the pages tag. Select all pagesof the document. Right click and select Open PageProperties. Under tab order select the option for ‘usedocument structure’.

(d) Then do a full check for accessibility. Go to: Advanced> Accessibility > Full Check. Select ‘Start Checking’. Thiswill show any accessibility problems with the document.Look out for problems with language, eg abbreviations orfigures (images) without alt tags.

3. Accessibility fixes:

Add alt tags to images. Select View > Navigation Tabs >Tags. Locate figure tags within the structure tree andselect Options > Properties. Then complete thedescription in Alternate Text field.

It can be helpful to keep the Highlight Content functionswitched on in Options, then you can see the imagehighlighted in the document.

Then, run the Full Check again to ensure problems arefixed. And Save your document.

4. Use bookmarks

If your document is quite long, eg over 8 pages considerusing bookmarks. With the bookmark tab open. Go to thepage you want to jump to. Select Options > Newbookmark. Name the bookmark. Continue insertinguseful bookmarks through the document and delete anythat aren’t useful. When you are finished select Options> Wrap Long Bookmarks. Go to File > DocumentProperties and select Initial View. Finally in theDocuments Options panel, under Show selectBookmarks Panel and Page

5. Optimise for the web

Finally you can reduce the size of your document. Thereare two ways to do this.

(1) File > Save As. Save the document with the samename to overwrite the original with your changes. This isthe most efficient method.

(2) File > Reduce File Size. Choose the option for‘Acrobat 5 or later’ This method delivers the highestcompression. If you use this method always save the fileas a different document to check that the quality has notbeen unacceptably degraded. If it has return to youroriginal document and use the Save As method.

websiteBACK TO CONTENTS>

The website is a vital tool for communicating with theDepartment’s stakeholders and audiences. It is the 24-hour window in to DCMS and primary vehicle forpromoting the work that we do.

Our homepage divides into broad communication themesto enable immediate access to our key initiatives andsuccesses. These themed areas facilitate greaterunderstanding about what DCMS does, and how and wherewe add value by “improving the quality of life for all”.

The website utilises the core elements of the DCMSbrand. The colours are used throughout the site to createinterest. The homepage design echoes the Department’slogo with its creative use of squares for the broadcommunication areas. The site also reflects the look andfeel achieved by DCMS offline publications using strongand vibrant images to convey a sense of dynamismwithout making the site heavy on the eye.

All DCMS campaign websites or micro-sites should lookas if they belong to the same ‘family’, echoing the lookand feel of the DCMS site, using the DCMS logopositioned left in conjunction with the DCMS colourpalette throughout.

Websites should reflect only the DCMS brand and nothave/become a brand in their own right unless expresspermission has been received from the e-communicationsmanager.

Where co-branding is necessary the logo exclusion zonemust be observed or a separate page for partnersprovided. The minimum size for the logo is 98 x 126pixels. It should be always be surrounded by an area ofclear space.

Bliss or Clarendon can be used selectively as a designfeature but Arial is the Department’s default webtypeface. The type should be no less than 11pt for body copy.

Websites should be built to e-Government and W3C AAaccessibility guideline standards.
