Does TETRA1 handle data?

• Database look up• AVL• Email• File transfer• Limited slow

scan video• But some multimedia

applications could ask for more….

Mission Critical Data Applications on TETRA• Today’s applications need data capacity

– Frequent messages, small payload:• AVLS from portables and vehicles• Database access• Status messaging

• But some applications starting to need more data throughput– Less frequent messages, much bigger payloads

• Mug shots• File transfer• Slow scan video

Other Additional Applications of TETRA 2

TETRA 2 Data Application User Benefits

PolicePolice Full mobile dispatch, extending complete control room environment to the field

Greater local control at a major incident site

TransportTransport

Live updates of arrival/departures boards at bus stops

More relevant and accurate information to passengers

Check image database to see manifests, passenger lists etc

Helps reduce smuggling of goods and people

Oil, Gas & Oil, Gas & UtilitiesUtilities

Camera monitoring at very remote locations to check on lone workers

Increased safety for remote workers

TEDS (TETRA Enhanced Data Services)

– High Speed Packet Data for TETRA

Page 8: November 20021 TETRA Release 2 Overview Mark Edwards Principal Staff Engineer Motorola European System Design Centre.

TWC2005 – November 2005November 05 - TETRA World Congress 2005

TETRA Enhanced Data Service - TEDS

• Backward compatible with TETRA Release 1– Network integration capability

• Flexible data rates and spectrum use– 25, 50, 100 and 150 kHz channels bandwidths– Can trade off data rate, spectrum and range

• Integrated TETRA 1 and TEDS system– i.e. can receive TETRA 1 calls on TEDS channels

• Technology selected for TEDS use – Multi-carrier QAM (Quadrature Amplitude Modulation) in all bands– D8PSK in 25 kHz

High speed packet data service for TETRA enabling faster data rate and higher data capacity

TWC2005 – November 2005November 05 - TETRA World Congress 2005

High Speed Packet Data Deployment

• TEDS will be the solution for mission critical• A range of channel bandwidths available in

the standard– Offer a single TEDS channel at each site, in addition

to TETRA 1 voice channels– Provision channel bandwidth based on number of

users and their data application requirements

• The modulation scheme can adapt to radio transmission conditions

GPRS versus TETRA - Availability

GPRS constraints TETRA 2 benefits

Availability

At times of high voice load there is little or no GPRS service available

– Revenue streams and profit targets dictate data coverage and capacity

– GSM cells often provisioned with dynamic GPRS channels to give priority to lucrative voice services

Users get the level of data service they need

– End user requirements dictate the coverage and capacity in their own private network

– TETRA cells are provisioned with the data capacity to meet

end user’s operational needs

TWC2005 – November 2005November 05 - TETRA World Congress 2005

GPRS versus TETRA - Predictability

GPRS constraints TETRA 2 benefits

PredictabilityGPRS users often see lower throughputs than today’s TETRA packet data users

– GPRS Data bandwidth is shared between many public users

TETRA users get access to the high bandwidths offered by the standard

– TETRA data bandwidth is shared only with users on a private network

Page 12: November 20021 TETRA Release 2 Overview Mark Edwards Principal Staff Engineer Motorola European System Design Centre.

TWC2005 – November 2005November 05 - TETRA World Congress 2005

GPRS versus TETRA - Security

GPRS constraints TETRA 2 benefits

SecurityMeets commercial security requirements

Meets Government security requirements, e.g.

–Mutual authentication–Longer keylengths means much harder to decrypt

TETRA: Availability – Predictability - Security

Typical upgrade to TETRA2

Requirements from all users….

• Maintain GoS (Grade of Service) for voice and any legacy data services

• Increase capacity for new data services

• Easy upgrade

Your expectations for TETRA2

TWC2005 – November 2005November 05 - TETRA World Congress 2005

Things to Remember

• New Spectrum– Maintain present spectrum to keep GoS for

existing voice & data services

• New Terminals for TEDS services– Retain present terminals for existing voice &

data services

In partnership for TETRA2

Spectrum: Progress has been made…..• ECC (Electronic Communications Committee) has just approved a

Work Item to add support for Wideband technologies in 385MHz – 470 MHz

– 385 MHz – 390 MHz385 MHz – 390 MHz would be the ideal choice for TETRA 2

– reserved for Nato– Sporadically used at present– users need to be very influential

• National regulators are responsible for allocating spectrum – Will Consider the local operating environment– Will Balance requirements from public safety, transportation, etc.

Users need to exert their influence through the MOU and directly to their National regulators

TETRA 2 takes the lead

The facts of life: • If you already have TETRA you will still be

able to use existing:– Terminals– Application– Services

• When you get TETRA 2 you gain:– Data speed & capacity– New multi media applications– Increased operational efficiency– New possibility to innovate
