CES...Cold Easel Syndrome happens sooner or later to most
artists. We manufacture excuses that keep us from painting.
The longer we are away the harder it seems to re-start our crea-
tive energy. Beware, CES can fester for weeks, months, even years.
Does it indicate fear of failure? The sensitive artist may be tripped up
by an insignificant rejection or misunderstanding. Ambitious projects
can bog one down. These trip-ups (of many) can lodge invisibly in the
subconscious. Tell yourself it’s OK to “paint for the trash can”.
No expectations...just start.
Part taken from Roxana Caples, past president of Olympia Art League.
Autumn or Fall
Something happens in the air each year
The summer breeze begins to get cold
The colors are vivid a wonder to see
The wind becomes stronger and bold
The leaves start to dance
In such a magical way
The trees sway in unison
To create a wonderful ballet
We are the audience
As we gaze with great awe
Mother nature has named it
Autumn or Fall
Apples are falling
As their fruit becomes sweet
They are ripe and so crisp
And are ready to eat
The pumpkins become huge
A sight to be seen
And when they are picked
It’s time for Halloween
The nights are longer
The darkness so deep
We seem to get tired more
and enjoy the long sleep
It’s so hard to capture
In words to express
What God has created
With such loveliness
I’m glad for the seasons I give thanks as I pray
We are blessed beyond measure
For every night and each day

“The Positive &
Beneficial Critique”
The word “Critique can bring back stories of
horror and humiliation in the hearts & minds of many artist. After all the
word “critique” means “to criticize” - doesn’t it? Not really - the true defi-
nition actually means “to analyze”. Our very own member—Tis Huberth—
(who has been painting for 53 years and teaching for 33) will talk about the
advantages and many benefits of positive critiquing and the ability to analyze
our own work in order to grow as an artist.
Tis is requesting that members bring a painting in progress—one in which
you wonder if it is “done or needs some possible ideas for improvement”.
For works on paper—please have them in some sort of mat, if at all possible.
She will try to bring a couple of standard sized mats. This lady will change your “attitude” towards the piece you are struggling
with. Tis has had several workshops “ARTESCAPE” during the year @
Camp Arnold. Many have taken her workshops several times. Tis is a Signature member of the International Society of Acrylic Painters,
and an elected member of the Women Painters of Washington. She has won
many awards and is in the permanent collections of King County, Kent, Ren-
ton and SeaTac. Her work has been published in a number of
books, including Splash Nine—a Northlight book. In addition

FREE service from Werner… Werner will photograph your artwork that you want on our
website. Bring art piece to one of our regular meetings. If possible, submit it not under glass to avoid reflections. Not
possible, he may be able to work around it. The photos will be e-mailed to you so you can forward to
our web-master Gary Wiffler. Please call Werner to make sure that he
will be at the meeting! Thank you Werner for the added photos for our newsletter. Many I take not always good. My
phone is temperamental … of course its not me!
President Jim Anderson’s Message for November…. As essential aspect of the culture of
art clubs is that they are inspirational, encouraging and nonjudgmental about each other’s work. This
is certainly the case of Pacific Gallery Artists. There is no belief that there is only one way to do art.
The viewing each others’ art, we may comment on what we find most interesting, ask the artist to
talk about their intention with the piece, comment on the colors, textures, design and techniques we
see. We might ask the artist to comment on what they like most about the piece or if they come with
any questions about the art. For instance, sometimes the artist might ask for ideas about how to deal with the back-
ground or a feature of the piece that just isn’t working out for them. The answers are given in a thoughtful matter of
fact and nonjudgmental way. As I observe how we respond to each’s art at PGA I see us taking
care of each other and the tenderness of the artists
journey. It is often in those conversations that I get
wonderful insights into how each person approaches
their art and the joy of the creative process. It is also
where members can experience a safe, empathetic
and inspirational atmosphere that is essential to the cre-
ative process. The PGA is a good place to be…..
