The Book of Souls Remembered If you have lost someone this past year or years past we invite you to remember him or her in this special celebra-tion by placing their names in the Book of Souls. Nurse’s Corner “Find the hero in you‖ is United Blood Services (UBS) slogan for their blood drives. It is really felt that anyone who can donate is a hero. A few
more facts:
Blood can only be stored on hospital shelves for 42 days – and every 3 seconds someone needs a blood transfusion. So blood is always needed!
Our bodies average 8-11 pints of blood, so most of us have a spare pint!
The only source of blood and it’s components is a human donor since blood cannot be manufactured.
To schedule a time to donate on Monday evening, November 10th, call Renee Ashby at 494-3295, or sign up online when the UBS sends e-mail or mail reminders to you, or choose your con-venient time when the schedule is out after Masses the next few weeks. There are many reasons why some people cannot donate blood. You can just say a prayer for those who need the blood transfusions, as that is a most helpful and healing contribution. Anyone who would like to donate some of the snacks or juice that we provide at the blood drive, call 494-3295 and we can talk about some choices!

Come Journey With Us Angels Among Us The name of a song that was popular in the 90s. It spoke of our trials and the darkness that we sometimes encounter while walking through life. We often forget that we are not alone and in our darkest hours we are blessed with the presence of others who tend to our deep pain and encourage us to keep going. This weekend we celebrate all Saints Day and all Souls Day. Ever wonder what makes a saint? If we look deeply into the hearts and lives of those we encounter in this world we can’t help but be moved by the courage and the strength of one’s who seem to take life in stride and provide hope for all who witness their energy and their gift of devotion and a sense of survival. That energy many times is gen-erated by the loved ones and the compassionate souls who sit at the side of those in need. Sometimes that energy is a total surprise to the one who is receiving and the one who is giving. How do we know the difference or is there a difference between the two? We can listen to people who relate their experience tending to the needs of others. The one who is generously sitting at the side of the suffering has often said ―it was such a blessing for me to be able to share the time and be in the life of this person during their time of passing.‖ We are privileged to share some aspect of their insight into life. All of us can relate to the concept of grief and loss when someone departs from this physical world. It is a little more confusing and sometimes foreign to us when we try to conceive the concept of Sainthood. When we look at life and the reality of humanity it is hard to see beyond the present state of those who share our daily life. When we encounter the struggles and difficulties that human beings endure we often miss the transition and transformation in the beautiful journey between life and death. We begin this month of remembering all who have died and we enter their names in the book of souls to honor them in a visible way. All of us have some-one who has touched our lives and passed away in this last year. Many come to mind…some very young some much older. All of us clearly saw the beauty in the prayerful journey of Mairissa Peo-ples her courageous battle against cancer brought us together as a faith community and one family. Donielle Vega is another beauti-ful creation who touched all of as she struggled with her debilitat-ing disease and loss of physical strength. There are many others who have blessed us with their life in a special way. They are not gone, but changed in their presence to us. We must never forget there are angels among us. The child runs to us to embrace us in their excitement is truly a tiny angel of hope and joy. Over the past few weeks, we have journeyed to many appoint-ments for health evaluations and tests. As we wait in anticipation for the tests to be completed and then evaluated by medical care-givers, we encounter the kindness and compassion of all who share our journey. There is never one without hope. The first time I wore my new brace on my right leg, I felt a new sense of free-dom and remembered what it was like to stand upright and walk. Some of the setbacks in health concerns involved a systemic change of the digestive process. Given the world that we live in it comes as no surprise that some things are hard to swallow and many things are difficult to digest. Many times the ―cures‖ can be worse than the condition and we have to weigh the value of the adventure. Side effects are a reality of life and treatment of ail-ments. We continue to have hope and see beyond the clouds and obstacles and stay confident in the power of prayer. Sharing is the strength of our faith. When my soul-mate eagerly lifts my wheel-chair from the car for the third time in three hours, I gratefully remember a time long ago when we became one in our journey. Happy feast day!! November 2nd, 2014 – The Commemoration of All the Faith-ful Departed—John 6:37-40
One of my grandsons is at the age where jokes and riddles totally fascinate him. And he loves to tell me his latest. Like yesterday when he asked, ―Grandpa, what always goes up and never comes down?‖ No obvious answer came to me. So to his delight, I responded that I did not know. Did he? With eyes dancing and a big smile, he laid on me the answer. ―Age!‖ And we both laughed especially because my age is getting rather high – at least as he saw it. Today is one of those rare times when an annual feast that is assigned to a special date, November 2nd, falls on a Sunday. So this Sunday we remem-ber ―the faithful departed.‖ Those who walked the path of life ahead of us, especially those we knew. For me, this particular-ly reminds me of my departed mom and dad, but also a long list of relatives and friends who are hopefully now in the em-brace of our God. In the church I grew up in this was a bit of a sad and scary feast day. But with the more hopeful attitudes generated by the Second Vatican Council, we Catholics are invited to think of death in more positive terms. The black priestly vestments of old funeral Masses have been replaced by white ones reminding us that Jesus died for our sins and rose from death to new life. Echoing the symbolic language of the gospel, Jesus came down so he could take us back up with him to heaven. Details of exactly what that will be like after we die are not available at this time –- we who are still ―down here‖ will have to wait your turn. Yet we live in hope that we will return to God, from whose heart we were first created. So if you follow the sequence: first we were ―up‖ with God. Then we came ―down‖ to earth. And finally we will be taken back ―up‖ to God. For a great eternal banquet. So the new riddle is this: What first is up and then down and then up? It’s us. All of us (we hope). Basically this is the same path traversed by Jesus. Actually, it’s appropriate to say that he created the path. Recall also that Jesus said that he is the way. And he showed us the way through the way he lived. And said, ―Follow me.‖ He did not say this was an easy way, a way with the wind always at our back or downhill. In fact, there will be times when it will be the opposite. Toward the end of his life, Jesus had to climb a hill. We will likely have to climb a few of them ourselves. Remember though, in the end we will be raised from death to life, eternal life with God and with all the others who preceded us and who will follow us. David M. Thomas, PhD
What to do with all that Halloween candy? Local dentists – Drs. William Brennick, Tara Gilbreath and Kyle McIntyre -- will take it off your hands. Wrapped candy and non-perishable food items will be collected from noon to 5 p.m. Monday,
Nov. 3, at Butte Family Dental, 820 Sampson St. The candy will be weighed and bought back for $1 per pound, and up to $5 per child. Donations will be accepted all week. The collections will be packaged and shipped to Operation Grati-tude to be sent to U.S. troops. Money donations to aid shipping costs and cards of appreciation for the troops are also welcome. Details: 406-494-7080.
Family Connection In Jesus' conversation with Martha, we learn that we can face death with hope because Jesus promises eternal life for all those who believe in him. In his death and Resur-
rection, Jesus has conquered death once and for all. In the Com-munion of the Saints, we continue to share a relationship with all those who have died. The saints in heaven intercede for us before God. We pray for the souls of the faithful departed. Our prayers for them help speed their journey to full communion with the saints in heaven. We praise God for this tremendous gift of our faith. As you gather as a family, remember the names of family mem-bers or friends who have died. Talk about these people, sharing memories of their lives and their influence on your family. Recall that today is All Souls Day. On this day we remember all those who have died, and we pray for them. Read today's Gospel, John 11:17-27, in which we hear Jesus console his friend Martha after her brother's death. Talk about Jesus' promise of eternal life and our hope of eternal life for all those who have died. Conclude by praying for all those who have died, naming in particular family members and friends. After each person is named, pray together ―Lord, have mercy.‖ Pray together the Act of Hope. O my God, relying on your infinite mercy and promises, I hope to obtain pardon of my sins, the help of your grace, and life everlast-ing, through the merits of Jesus Christ, my Lord and Redeemer. Amen.
